This historic area of old Sydney has been developed--with taste--into a major touristic area, and prices are accordingly high in most shops and restaurants; but the old streets and walkways are truly pleasant to walk in, the historic buildings are excellent to view, and in a few spots you can find houses still lived in by ordinary Sydney residents, and pubs which are local rather than driven mainly by the tourist trade. In good weather the outdoor cafes and wine bars are especially attractive features. This is a must-see area, right up there along with the Harbour Bridge (which runs through/over part of The Rocks) and the harbour itself (beside/around it).
