Smaller than I thought ;-) No show seen, good view to the bridge!
Unfortunately there was been any constructions in the near surrounding...

We made a visit to the Opera House during the Vivid Light Festival and took the "Celebrating Vivid Sydney" tour early in the evening. Right from entering the building I was spellbound by the amazing architecture, the beauty of the design and the views across the river with all the light boats on the water. The tour guide was very knowledgable and answered questions with easy confidence. After the tour we emerged from the building just as the sails were being lit for the festival and the sight was just stunning. I would recommend a tour of the Opera house at anytime but if you are lucky enough to be in Sydney during the light festival it really is a must

We opted to do the back stage tour of the opera house. This means you have to be at the stage door entrance at 6:45 sharp. If you are late, you miss the tour. We were shown through the entire building. The set storage areas [which are VERY crammed in]. Photography in those areas was not allowed due to artistic copyright. The massive lift system used to elevate sets onto the stage, the stage itself and the orchestra pit [which showed how the conductor has to view 2 worlds (the stage and the orchestra at the same time]. We were also told why there was a safety net over the orchestra pit. Apparently it stemmed from a production of Boris Gudenof which included live chickens. One night one chicken fell of the stage into the lap of the 2nd violinist. He threw it back onto the stage but this spooked the other chickens which decided to escape into the audience. Chickens were not used again after that...

Then we were shown the orchestra hall, from the stage, the flight tower where scenery is held in suspense over the actors' heads, the green room [which is not green], etc. The tour lasted about 2 hours and finished with a hearty breakfast.

Overall very recommended.

The Opera House tour was interesting. We were taken into several of the entertainment venues, although couldn't take pictures if there were people working in there! PRIVACY reasons. The history is interesting and seeing the outside close up was good. Before the tour, you get the opportunity to have a photo taken in front of a green screen. When your tour is over, you have the option to purchase those photos which they have now add the inside and outside of the Opera House. Some of those come on postcards you and send through the mail.

This is a landmark and for that reason is a 'must see.' That said, there's not all that much to see, so it's a pretty easy / quick item to check off your list. While very unique, I wasn't overwhelmed by it and didn't feel I needed a lot of time there. The Opera is high quality, though, so I do recommend seeing a show.
