We enjoyed our stay here. The rooms are small but clean and charming (cool old tile in the bathroom etc). There is a kettle for tea and coffee. The wifi was free and worked well. We also apprreciated the free use of a washer/dryer at the end of the hallway. The reception staff were all very friendly and helpful. The location is great to walk to Circular Quay, train stations, etc. Very charming old place!!

The rooms are smallish, dingy and very dark - mainly because the windows are opaque glass and covered in wire. You can't see out at all - you have to go downstairs and out the main door to find out what the weather is! The lights are dark, it is impossible to read or even see any dark-colored items in your case. The bathroom is tiny, just a closet carved out of the room, and they just picked up towels from the floor and hung them up again.
The bar was closed by 9PM on a Friday night! And during breakfast the cleaner was hoovering around you and under your table. The 'air conditioning' sounded like a jet engine taking off, and could not cool below 25degrees. And the desk staff were not helpful - take it or leave it was their attitude.
We took some family members there for a holiday, and were VERY embarrassed that we had chosen such a place.
Recommend that you avoid this place.

Room Tip: The ones at the front are the only ones with windows you can see out.

Can't say enough good about the hotel. Great location, staff, rooms, and price. The restaurant I would never go back to. The servers there were next to worthless. It was incomprehensible to ask for vegetables instead of fires. The food was the worst we had all trip and over priced.

Central location and cheap but I guess you get what you pay for, tiny room with almost no space to walk around and unpack your luggage, walls very thin and you pretty much can hear everything and everyone at night - just hope for quiet neighbours. Good wifi though.

A tiny hotel in central Sydney. Easy to arrive via train from Sydney international Airport. We arrived early in the morning from Europe and had to wait just 20 minutes to get a room, what was famous to take a shower and sleep some hours. The room was small and clean. We had one without view out of the window, but that was ok for us. It's easy to walk to the harbour or to Kings Cross.

Apart from feeling you are stepping back in time to the era of "the grand hotel" the very best thing about 'The Castlereagh' is it is so central, that you barely need to use public transport, as most of Sydney's major attractions are within easy walking distance.
As a result, we only needed to use the Sydney Ferries, to cross the harbour to the Zoo, or to venture out on them to take photos of the harbour.
The hotel is located between two major stations, being about 3 minutes walk from either. A stroll to Circular Quay, the Opera House, Gallery, Botanic Gardens or Museum is about 10 minutes walk. Hyde Park is around the corner. Sydney Synagogue is across the road and does informative tours of this historic place of worship.
Shopaholics will be pleased that David Jones, Sydney's famous department store, is on its doorstep, along with many high end shops.
Even the food mecca of Surrey Hills was an easy and fascinating walk from 'The Castlereagh', or a A$10 taxi fare one way. We saved a fortune on public transport by such a centrally located hotel.
Ditto Oxford Street, for those seeking accomadation for Sydney's Gay Mardi Gras!
Our room was a standard twin, furnished with reproduction antiques, with a disappointing view of a brick wall, but it was clean, quiet and comfortable. The bathroom was sheer indulgence, with black and white tiles and high end fittings with an embarrassingly fabulous water guzzling high pressure shower, in a country where water is a scarce and precious resource and water rationing in times of drought is regular. I was guilt ridden using it!
The dining room, where a wonderful breakfast was served, along with the lounge and the bar were all very opulent affairs that simply oozed "old Sydney" with decor varying from Art Nouveau to Art Deco. Gorgeous!
Before the mid 1960s, Sydney had many such charming hotels within the inner city, but these days such small and individually quirky establishments are a rarity.
A down side was that the bar and lounge closed about 8pm, but the very friendly 'New Windsor' bar is located just around the corner and its curbside tables are just perfect for observing Sydney-siders, going about their lives.
Staff at the Castlereagh, were highly obliging and helpful. They arranged airport transfers for us.
The most intriguing aspect for us was that the Castlereagh had very strong Masonic links, with Masonic symbolism and off limit areas for non masonic guests. However, this merely added to the ambiance and mystery of 'The Castlereagh'.
I would certainly stay there again based on my positive experience of it and its convenient location.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing on to Castlereigh St. There are no iconic Sydney views here!

The hotel is the old Masonic Lodge and headquarters in Sydney, and still functions as a venue for the Masons. The walls are full of its history, and the 1920's décor is opulent. In particular, the Grand Dining Hall is breathtaking. Have breakfast and pretend you are a guest at The Kremlin or Versailles. It's only otherwise open to the public for lunch a few days a week (music on Fridays) and not for dinner. A pity. What a find! The bar past reception is comfy and characterful, with nice free snacks if your timing is good. And the lounge upstairs is the same. Everything is a bargain here .. the food, the drinks and the accommodation. My room was very small and basic. There are larger rooms available. And don't stay here if you want indoor pools and porters. But what a bargain!
