We took the ferry ride over to Fort Denison and would recommend this trip for families & couples, the ferry ride takes approximately 20 minutes and is a lovely scenic trip.
Fort Denison itself is much smaller than we expected, we opted to just wander around at our own pace rather than do a guided tour however we didn't realise at the time you are unable to access all areas unless on a guided tour. It's a very interesting place and doesn't take much time at all, book in for a guided tour to make the most of it.
One tip, when you are ready to return the ferry doesn't stop on the way back unless there are people waiting on the little jetty. Afternoon trip is best you & can be there for the 1pm time check firing of the cannon. We didn't eat at the restaurant/café as we had read more negative reviews than positive so cannot comment on the food/service.
Disabled access & access with prams may be tricky but not impossible.

Always wanted to visit Fort Denison, the ferry ride is expensive at $20 per head. The food was average and very expensive for the quality. The upside the views were terrific and the history tour was worth it.

I am totally embarrassed on behalf of our friends who invited us for a special occasion, and the calibre of food on their set menu. I would not go back, nor would I recommend. Apart from the cost to get to and from the island, $20 return......to Circular Quay, The food and wine list is overpriced, considering the service is ordinary, and no Aussie accents from the staff. The maitre 'd lacked personality, and the wait and 'stuff ups' with meals was hard to accept. Don't spend your hard earned dollars on this experience, it is tired, lacking, as is the staff, and you pay through the nose......

This is a fascinating litttle island in Sydney Harbour. It has quite a history especially in the early days of Sydney.
