“Cheap & Good but not for tourists or the faint of heart”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 January 2014

Alfred Park Hostel is a true backpacker. It is the stuff of legends that backpackers write about. Dingy and dark hallways, not well lit up rooms but boisterous and vibrant nights around the common/kitchen areas. I've spent four nights there and I do enjoy the company of Working Holiday guests.

The Good: Located 10-15 minutes walk from Central Train Station in Sydney, Alfred Park is well connected to the trains and bus network. There is a caveat though. This hostel is great for those on working holidays. Not for the casual tourist.
Rooms are air-conditioned (a rarity among Hostels), clean and there are hot showers to be had. Kitchen areas and common areas are large enough.
Staff are the young hip kind but they are very helpful, very approachable and understand the needs of backpackers very well. There is FREE WiFi which is great and internet enabled PCs for those that do not have any form of electronic device or would prefer to type on a proper keyboard.

The Bad: Although close to the Central Train station, most of the tourist attractions are located within the city centre of Sydney. A better located hostel for tourists will be those in the Rocks or within the city centre where you can walk to those attractions. Because to my chagrin, I had to take a 10 minute train ride to the city centre to visit the popular tourist attractions all the time and Sydney is an expensive city already.
The public Hallways and rooms of the Hostel are really dark and are not brightly lit. Not for the faint of heart and the property itself is kind of decrepit.

In short, Alfred Park Accommodation is good for young backpackers who are in Australia for work or working holidays.
NOT for tourists, casual travellers.
If you like boisterous vibrant party backpacking hostel with partiers, this is the place.

If you are a tourist visiting Sydney, or the casual traveler who likes solitude and quiet, this is NOT the Hostel. I hope I made the distinction clear enough. That said, the wonderful staff does make up for the bad points of the hostel and it is cheap. So for my good experience I rate it a Four but i know it is really worth Three.

Room Tip: Avoid Rooms 5 - 12 as they are located right next to the common eating area where the young backpack...

We stayed here in October & were very disappointed. The photos on the net & reviews were very deceiving.
This place takes uncleanliness to a new level.
There were boogies smeared on the wall & blood on the carpet.
If I could levitate off the bed I would have. Instead I spent more on a full pyjama set to protect my body from the dirty, smelly sheets.
The gap in the door frame was bigger than the window.
We stayed here as a group and were traumatized.
Spend the extra dollars, book into a hotel.

Positives
Good location within walking distance to CBD and good park opposite the hostel to work out in. Price of the hostel was reasonable value compared to other similar options. The staff were friendly and informative.

Negatives
Not enough space or equipment in the kitchen. People were not very good at cleaning up after themselves despite the warning signs. The communal area is pretty poor. As slightly more mature travellers (late 20's) we felt a little overrun with noisy teenagers although we were not kept awake with noise at night. Lockers in the rooms would be helpful to keep things more tidy and secure. The beds were OK but not the most comfortable.

It's about 15 minutes from central station. And it is far from the city and attractions. You need to take free shuttle bus to go. Moreover, the price is fair. The room is small, smelly, not clean and not comfortable. You may have better options in the city.

The staff are helpful and friendly here which makes a big difference. The rooms are pretty clean and I guess you could say they are pretty good value for money. The location is great because it is only a ten minute walk to Central station. Probably one of the better hostels in Sydney.

We stayed in a 4 bed with private en suite for a few days. The rooms are tiny, but clean. The bath was also clean. The staff was so friendly and willing to help us all the time. We enjoyed our stay here as a family and would come back again. It is about a 15 minute walk from the CBD but we didn't mind.

I had quite good stay, and their staff is very friendly. Location fo the hostel is ok, but you have to walk around 20 minutes to city center, where few other hostels are located. Place is clean enough for backpackers standard, but rusting mirror frames and whole bathroom in general would benefit from some sort of fixing. I had a fridge in the room which was great, and bed was soft but comfy for me. Great place to meet others as common area, outside but under the roof is where everyone spend their free time. But as a result, noise from common area just outside the rooms makes it very noisy. They do have notice informing about area closing time being reasonable 10:30pm, but this is not really enforced and at least during my stay the place was quiet only after midnight. One annoying thing was the internet. It's very limited, great wi-fi reception in the room but limited to either 4h and 500mb, or one day (I'd stay 3)! Even in the poorest countries free wi-fi in hostels is a standard! First time came across that and it's really surprising and annoying. In general comparing it to other hostels in Sydney is ok. I still think it's a bit too expensive, but that is the case with all Australian hostels, big bucks for worse services then in other countries.
