I stayed 3 months in Kanga House, in summer 2012/13.
Even though it's simple and the rooms are old I enjoyed staying there very much because it's a bit like living with a big family! The people there are very relaxed and you make friends easily. It's a hostel to stay for a longer time.
It's very close to a train station, a supermarket, many cafés, bars and clubs,
At the weekends the atmosphere can be a bit rough in Kings Cross, so it might not be for everyone.
The kitchen is in a good condition, so are the bathrooms.
They have a beautiful backyard and you can see the skyline, which is pretty awesome!
The staff is very nice and helpful.

Room Tip: It depends on the time you go there. In summer it's nice to have a room in the basement, in wint...

Kanga House is such a wonderful place to stay in Sydney! Not only are you in a great area (and a beautiful street) you have harbour views from some of the rooms and bathrooms. Despite the fact that the views are great, I would have to say the hospitality / friendliness and warmth was this hostels major strength!

It was so lovely to feel included and to speak to so many interesting and friendly people. When you are in a foreign country , it is lovely feeling like you are home.

The staff are friendly, and seem to remember your name and ask you about your day. They also provide jobs for you if you ask them to put your name on the working list. There is free breakfast daily/ Free BBQ on Sunday and free wifi.

This hostel is a family run hostel that is run purely on referrals/ return guests and Word of Mouth. I was lucky to find it that first day strolling on the street!

Kanga House have a lot to do with my great time in Sydney. Thank you- I don't want to go home ;(

Room was like an apartment: couch, fridge, microwave, sink and heater. An amazing view over the central of the city opened from a big window. Location is perfect: near a train station, but not in the hassle of the cbd. Building and atmosphere were pretty european... especially because of the 100 french backpackers running around :D
Kitchen was ok, (lots of pans and stoves were working), but it was already inhabited by a big cockroach family.
Reseptionists appear to be having good and bad days, so you might want to be lucky when you talk to them. At it's best, service is ok.

It's difficult to review hostels because they're all pretty much the same. Instead of rating them on criteria like restaurant quality, staff friendliness and decor I think it's better to rate hostels on number of cockroaches, smell of pillows and noise. So here is my own star rating:

Number of cockroaches ***** (that's good ie. no cockroaches)
Smell of pillows ** (I had worse on 1 occasion (D&D Inn on KhaoSan Road in Bangkok))
Noise **** (I slept well and they enforce a no noise after 10 policy)

So all in all it was alright. It served the purpose of providing you with protection from weather, reasonable security from criminals aaaannnd ... well that's about it

I should mention that I stayed in a 2 person room with my girlfriend so I can only speak for that room type.

Room Tip: Room 8 has its own sink

We booked a week and regretted it from day one, the kitchen is impossible.

Negatives: the staff were unhelpful.
*You have to clean your own room as it doesn't get done. Supposed to be completed when a person checks out- it wasn't. Then when they finally did come in the day after I'd cleaned it myself, the cleaner just looked at the sink and did a bit of hoovering. Never under the beds or a proper clean.
*Bathrooms had the floors washed daily - with water and nothing else and the toilets and tiles/ showers never cleaned.
*Kitchen has 4 hobs (it has 8 but 4 don;t work and according to some long termers they haven't worked for at least a month!) so only 2 people can cook at one time, the pans are too big to fit more than 2 on the 4 hobs at any one time. About 6 plates and forget mugs for the free tea and coffee.
*There are only 6 seats around the table in the dining room so you cant sit down to eat.
*There is no lightbulb in the laundry and lounge area so its pitch black at night
*No where to put your clothes or towels when in the shower - showers are low and I don't recommend tall people checking in. At 5'9 I had to duck to get under the shower.
*reception was more closed than open while we were there.
*our room stank. could have been the fact it never gets aired
*they need mosquito nets on windows as you get eaten alive at night.
*Stinks of weed every day/ night.

Positives:
*quiet at night apart from Saturday- where it went mental until about 4am.
*Although you can keep food in your room there were no bugs to be seen (1 cockroach for the whole stay, probably too dirty for them)
*Always had hot water in ladies shower, mens shower was hot then cold then hot
*Breakfast is suppose to finish at 9.30 but is in fact left out until it is all gone.

If coming to Sydney my tip is to book elsewhere. And definitely book before you get here as people are always getting turned away from hostels
