Stayed for 4 nights to celebrate New Years Eve in Sydney. Choose this hotel as every other Sydney hotel was VERY expensive over the New Year period! But the Rydges was great, friendly helpful staff, nice comfortable room, and they left us a bottle of wine and biscuits in our room on New Years Eve!
Location wise, yes its not in the Sydney CBD but we asked at reception about the buses and were directed to the nearby Seven Eleven where we bought a 10 pass bus ticket that we used to get to the city. We even walked a few times to and from Sydney Central Station in around 25 minutes.

Room Tip: High floor city-view room

Hi Paul and Jackie, thanks very much for your review.

So glad we could help you bring in the New Year in comfort, and that you enjoyed our small NYE gift.

As you mentioned, although we are not in the CBD, we are lucky to have the benefit of a very convenient location, just minutes from the centre of Sydney.

Hope to see you back some time during 2014.

Kind Regards

We had some trepidation, having read the previous reviews, but it was very convenient to where we wanted to be so decided to give it a try. It is a convenient location to lots of things.
We e-mailed beforehand and requested a quiet room. The room was very quiet, facing out over the pool. A pleasant view. The rooms are a bit "jaded" as is the hotel generally, in need of a bit of refurbishment, but the room was big, well equipped and clean. The bed is comfortable and there was a large flat screen TV. The staff were great, pleasant and helpful.
All in all, a good stay.

Stayed mid January 2014 for 2 nights with 2 for 1 breakfast offer.
Had concerns after reading previous reviews - pleasantly surprised making stay much more enjoyable, so thank you.
Staff - very helpful and kind - nothing was too much trouble.
Rooms - clean, very comfortable - a few cosmetic details to be addressed but nothing "too distressing"!
Breakfast - beautifully presented and plenty of it, making a great start to the day.
Location - easy to get around using buses and on foot.
Cafes/Restaurants etc - reasonable walk to King Street Newtown - well worth it!

Rydges Camperdown is located at a great location within walking distance to the King St area (with lots of eateries). Also pretty nifty to have buses that connect to the major trains lines and such.

The staff is pretty courteous and try and help us - even when I had to arrive a day later than my wife (they followed my wife's instructions to the latter. Do know that it is an old hotel (control your expectations) but it is adequate.

The price is also very reasonable for a Sydney hotel.

I am very pleased to read that our location was very convenient during your stay and that our staff were very courteous and helpful to you.

Although the hotel is an older property, we are continuously working on improving our product offerings and are currently half way through some soft refurbishments in the rooms.
Once again thank you for you kind feedback and we do hope to welcome you back to the hotel in the near future.

So lets be clear he this review is based on the price we paid for our 7 day stay over New Year. This hotel offered us reasonably priced accomodation when all other hotels at New Year where just sucking the notes from your wallet...so well done on that. I was a little worried about this hotel based on the reviews so here are some of my concerns and whati found:

1 - the staff are rude....absoultely NOT. they could not have been better, they were courteous and could not do enough to help...WELL DONE
2. - the rooms are old ....the rooms are a bit dated but our family room was very large, very clean and had everything we could have needed. Theyeven gave us a bottle of wine and other nice things to wish us happy new year.
3. It is in a bad location ... True it is a bus ride in the city but a. It takes less that 10 mins b. it could not be simpler and c. The staff were brilliant at showing my best options. Also just up the road is a nice student area with loads of different restaurants. We recommend Mad Pizza...they were brilliant.
4. There is no wifi - yes there is and in the lounge it is free and fast with no limits. I used it to update weeks of photos to my back up website with no issues
5. The lifts were poor... I cannot believe someone actually said is on one of the reviews. The lifts were great.

By the way the outdoor pool was nice to!

All in this was an excellent stay at a very reasonable price that exceeded our expectations (which were low).

A friend and l organised a reunion weekend at the Rydges Camperdown for over 40 people over the long weekend in October 2013. After the weekend I went on a cruise leaving from White Bay International Cruise Terminal which was only a short distance from the hotel, easy to get to by taxi.
I will give my review in 2 parts so those only interested in a room won't be too bored.
re: A) accommodation and transport then B) as a function and transport. (A) The reception staff were all extremely friendly and willing to give directions when asked. Checkin and check out were timely considering it was a long weekend and the hotel was full. The rooms were clean and quite large, and had plenty of power points. We hired out several rooms which varied - there were rooms with either 2 queen beds in them or a king bed which were so wonderfully comfortable - just loved the beds. Rooms also varied in that some had a couch, and coffee table, some just a chair, some had a microwave in it, so I guess if there's anything in particular you would prefer in your room then just ask. All had desks, fridge, tea & coffee facilities, large robe, hair dryer and ensuite with a shower (great pressure) over a bath and plenty of mirror and bench space. I was impressed that there was also a full length mirror in my room. Prices in the mini bar were reasonable. They have 2 lifts which was adequate to cater for all without too long a wait even though the hotel was full. They have an underground carpark at extra cost which is very secure and access into the hotel via the lifts. There is a laundry and dry cleaners up the road about 20 metres which did good service and prices also. The pool is available for use at any time, the bar stays open until very late if patrons are using it. There is a smoking area in the pool area and one out the front towards the side street which consists of only an ashtray. Breakfast is served in the dining room or you can request room service for a little extra cost. l thought breakfast was rather expensive however it is the same rate as the other hotels we made enquiries at so l guess not. We had 2 meals in the dining room and both were delicious. Table service was great also and we could tab our meal to our room bill. There was very little noise heard from the other rooms in the hotel but my room faced Missenden Rd and l could hear the traffic and roadworks going on outside during the night. Curtains were blockout so the sun didn't team in in the morning disturbing our sleep. There is a pub a short distance up Missenden road which a great variety of food and a really nice food area out the back to eat either inside or out although it doesn't look much from the front l recommend it for a meal. Or the McDonalds with a McCafe is across the street from the RPA hospital (also within walking distance) up Missenden Rd if you just want a light snack, etc. There is also a Nando's across the road and a few Thai and other restaurants in close distance. A bus stop is directly out the front of the hotel and cost less than $3 to get to Darling Harbour about 15 mins drive away. Internet is available at a cost in your room, cant remember the cost coz we didnt use it.
2. Function rooms/facilities - We arranged our function mainly over the internet as both our organisers live interstate to Sydney. From the first time we contacted Rydges everyone was great and willing to help as much as possible. We visited once before our decision to go with Rydges so we could check out the rooms, the beds and the food. We were made welcome from the time we arrived and they even made suggestions of different ideas, the rest was all online. Nothing was too much effort for any of the staff. Our function which stretched over 3 days was a smash hit. There was room for a charter bus we hired to pick up and drop off. The meals and cocktail party foods were all very tasty and affordable The variety of menu we were given to choose our formal dinner & cocktail party was excellent, it made it hard to choose but we obviously made the right choice as it was superb. We were given so many choices and given plenty of time to decide what we wanted. We had a cocktail party in the pool area and the staff helped us decorate the area how we wanted it and clean it up again and a 3 course meal which went so smoothly thanks to all the wonderful staff who did as much as possible to make sure everything was just perfect. They made sure all the hot food was hot when served, they supplied the dance floor, audio equipment and a movie screen - whatever we asked for they supplied with a smile (and at reasonable costs too). Drinks were plentiful also. And their function room was ideal. I could not recommend this hotel enough for any function whether it be a reunion like ours or a wedding. Even their security men were cheerful and helpful.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that does not face Missenden Rd (or a room that overlooks the pool) to avoid the main...
