“Good budget option”
Reviewed 25 November 2013

I stayed here for 3 nights in mid-October 2013. The hotel is well-located, being a 10-15 minute walk down from Kings Cross station. I arrived very early and couldn't have my room yet as it wasn't ready, but the girl at reception kindly let me leave my luggage with her, which was greatly appreciated. My room was a single with a shared bathroom (for which I never had to queue) and a small kitchenette. This was perfectly adequate and a good alternative if you want a budget option with the chance to self cater, but don't want to do the whole backpacker hostel thing. I had no problem with street noise. My room was clean, if a little drab - a couple of pictures on the wall would brighten it up.

The hotel is on Challis Avenue, so you can easily avoid the delights of Kings Cross by turning left out of the entrance, walking down Challis Avenue and the McElhone Steps to Woolloomoolloo wharf - where you'll find a stop for the hop on/hop off explorer bus. It's also an easy walk to the Botanic Gardens this way. Once in the gardens, just walk up over the hill for a great view of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

The only thing I would warn people about is not to under-estimate the narrowness of the stairs in the building - those with huge suitcases and backpacks may find it a bit of a squeeze!

I would not stay here again. I saw two cockroaches staying there in my bedroom. The staff was nice and helpful. It is a nice location, close to public transportation and a ton of restaurants nearby. But for what I paid for, I thought it would have been cleaner.

Compact, clean and adequate accommodation at a great price, and in Potts Point! It's a short walk to King's Cross or a longer one across the Domain into the City. Alternatively, there is public transport to get you further afield. The Maisonette is surrounded by cafes and bars with a huge range of food styles. The downside for us was the noise. Even though the bars downstairs all shut at 11pm on a Saturday night there was a lot of people noise in the street until the early hours. And being a warm night we had the window open as there is no air conditioning.

The room itself was adequate, but not a place you'd want to spend awake time in. There was an electric jug, microwave and a blessedly quiet fridge along with a small selection of cutlery and crockery. No chopping board, no dish washing detergent and just a well-worn steak knife to chop food. The local Woolworths Supermarket is a very short distance away and has a good range of fresh and microwavable meals so we managed OK, even though we're vegan.

We stayed in a room with twin beds. No aircon (had a ceiling fan instead) but not really required in Oct. Small and compact room with TV and a good selection of channels. No kitchenette but provided free tea and coffee. Basic bathroom and a second sink with microwave, kettle and cutlery.
It's about 10-15mins walk to kingscross train station. less than 5 mins from bus stop. The staff were friendly, competent and helpful. They can also help you book airport transfer which will only set you back $12 and they didn't charge a booking fee. A fairly quiet neighborhood with plenty of cafes, shops and restaurants to explore if you don't feel like going into the city. Within walking distance also were the royal botanical garden and Harry's cafe de Wheels in Woolloomoolloo. Bed and pillows were comfortable. They provided Towels, shampoo, conditioner and soap. Our beds weren't made but new towels were provided and bins changed daily so didn't really bother us. A pleasant stay.

Simple accommodation but with everything you need, good shower and bed, microwave and TV. Short walk to centre of Sydney and restaurants etc nearby which is great. Reception only open some of the time but I was out all day and didnt need any particular information or help.

Room Tip: Can be a bit noisy on the street front.

We spent 3 nights here and it is a series of hits and misses. It's not a 24 hour reception - which is fine - but I think 4 pm close on a Sunday is just weird. We had a superior ensuite room and the king bed was super comfy. A lot of effort has gone into interior design, nice linen etc - but - only a fan (no air conditioning). Servicing of the room consists only of emptying the bin and providing fresh towels - get used to making your own bed. Little ensuite appeared clean, but was run down and had a persistent smell of mildew. We were keen on the place because it had a 'kitchenette". That's code for bar fridge (which other hotels have anyway), a sink and a microwave. Minimal crockery and cutlery, no toaster - so even making a basic breakfast is difficult (probably smoke detector issues - but still - a toaster is so basic). Also - the kitchen was ancient - there was water damage meaning the cupboard door under the sink swung open unless you jammed your dish towel in it. The chairs and little table were a nice spot to eat your cheese and crackers - but both chairs were missing a couple of screws from underneath and felt quite precarious. It's part of the Sydney Lodges group and we've since stayed at Springfield Lodge (see review) - completely different vibe - air conditioning, really helpful and friendly front desk staff, superb housekeeping staff - a proper hotel with the luxury of a well equipped guest kitchen and bargain rooms available for the budget conscious.

if you want simple, no frills accommodation at an affordable price, the maisonette hotel is perfect. the room is clean and they provide soap, shampoo, linen and towel. the room has a ceiling fan and no aircon, but the weather was cool at night and I was out during most of the day, so it was ok. there is a simple kitchenette in the room with kettle, microwave fridge and cutleries, so it's possible to make your own simple breakfast. the location was great, by walking across the botanical gardens, it is possible to get to the harbor bridge and Sydney opera house. there is also the train station within short walking distance. there are cafes, restaurants, pubs and supermarket in the vicinity too. the ladies at the front desk are friendly and helpful. always happy to assist us in whatever way they can. there was one day where the rooms were not cleaned, which they apologized for.

the downsides are, there's no lift and the rooms start at level 1, so if you have heavy bags like me, be prepared to do a lot of heavy lifting. also, the windows of my room faces directly to the back alley, and there are restaurants and pubs right downstairs, so it can get pretty noisy during closing time, when they are cleaning, locking up and taking out the trash. if you're a light sleeper, you'd probably get to sleep only after the pub close. there is also no parking available. the car park is a good 15mins walk away and costs $25 per night. so if you stay there for 3 nights and take the car out everyday like me, it totals $75! it is almost impossible to find street parking near the hotel as the restaurant downstairs gets a fair bit of patronage, so if you drive back during the day, be prepared to park a few streets away and walk. overall, it is a hotel not meant for people with cars.
