“Unfriendly and Unsanitary”
Reviewed 8 November 2013

My partner and I booked a One night stay here before going to new zealand. I knew we were getting a budget room so my expectations were low. However we were horrified on how we were first greeted by a man handing us room keys with no welcome or even talking to us. When we got into our room the bed sheets were soiled and the room smelt. The power points had been pulled out of the wall and thge shared bathroom was filthy. Very upsetting that such a low level of service was given and the lack of clenliness

Do not stay here!!

MercSydney, General Manager at The Mercantile Hotel, responded to this review, 12 November 2013
Hi Jess,
I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your stay at The Mercantile, but i'm a little surprised by your comments also.
Our hotel is known for its friendly staff so i apologise if you did not have a good experience on check in.
Our bed linen is changed daily for new check in's and our linen is from an outsourced company which is why i find it hard to believe that the linen was soiled!! Did you not complain to the manager on duty regarding this matter? I have also walked into all our bedrooms and could not find any power points that were "pulled out of the wall"
I also can't believe you thought our shared bathrooms were "filthy" because if you have a look on Wot If our hotel is highly regarding for being friendly, great price for a great location and very clean, especially our shared bathroom rooms.
Again i apologise that you did not enjoy your hotel experience.
Kind Regards.
The Mercantile Team.

Great old old authentic Irish pub, Foods okay but the beer is great Kilkenny and Guiness on tap. Great Music on Friday nights with Shayley Wilde. Fun times to be had friendly bar staff so get on it. Seating in and outdoors, always interesting people to watch. Busy markets outside on the weekends.

Was visiting Sydney as part of the British & Irish Lions Tour and was looking for somewhere to have a Guinness as I'm not a fan of lager. Having had this place recommended as somewhere that serves Guinness, it exceeded my expectations by also serving Kilkenny Beer too.

Had a steak meal to go with the beer and despite it being late and busy the food came pretty quickly and was very tasty.

Would definitely visit the Mercantile Hotel bar again if I'm in Sydney again.

We have stayed here several times both as a couple and with friends and the location and price cannot be beaten. The breakfast is great and the markets are right outside the door! Would stay here again whenever I am in Sydney.

I've been to this pub a few times before and really enjoyed the food. This visit I tried the Steak and ale pie, an old favourite of mine, it's usually very good here. When it arrived my wife pointed out the strange pastry. On closer inspection it turned out to be a half of a toasted pitta type bread. The waitress said it should have been served with pastry. She checked with the kitchen and no explanation was possible as the chef was flat out. Obviously not making pastry!

Let's start to say that this is not technically an hotel, but a pub with rooms. However, the location of the Mercantile, a few steps from Sydney Harbour Bridge, 5 minutes to Circular Quay and in the center of The Rocks, makes this a suitable opportunity for a no frills vacation in Sydney. There are rooms with common baths and also with ensuite bath. The rooms are clean, though a bit old in furnitures and especially windows. This particular is the only one really disappointing: the windows vibrate a bit with the car passing; considering that during the week end there is live music, you could consider that noise. Breakfast - continental or hot - served at the bar. Friendly staff.

Room Tip: Room not facing the street should be better in order to minimize the noise.
