“A wonderful evening”
Reviewed 29 November 2013

My wife and I had dinner there for the first time. It had been recommended by two friends. It more than exceeded our expectations. The food was simply great and the service was excellent too. And good value for money as well, for a restaurant of this standard. We loved the wonderful tastes. Some of them were completely new to us. It is also very nice to have dishes which can be shared. Lovely atmosphere. The ambience was very relaxed and friendly. We will certainly be returning!

“A hidden gem”
Reviewed 11 October 2013

Tucked away in a small laneway in Surry Hillls is this gem of an Italian restaurant. We were there on a Wednesday night and it was packed with a noisy, happy crowd. Our table opted for the banquet menu, which comprised of 12 shared courses, each a delicious plate of fresh, clean flavours. There were many highlights - but the chicken livers cooked in Marsala and served with broad beans stand out. The meal finished with three sweet treats - the chocolate salami, layered gelato and cannoli. There is an extensive list of Italian wines to match. We sat next to a large picture window overlooking a lane way and a wall covered in street art - a true inner city experience. The service is warm and professional. A great night out with friends.

“Quirky, Tuesday theme nights”
Reviewed 9 October 2013

We were passing through Sydney and caught up with friends at Bertha’s.
First lesson is to get the address right – there is no significant external signage and the foyer is at the end of a long hallway off an alley in Darlinghurst/South Sydney.
On Tuesday nights they follow a differing theme, with a fixed menu. They have two sittings at 6.30 pm and 8.30 pm. reservations are essential.
I describe Bertha’s as modern Italian which does not shrink back from experimenting with different dishes and ingredients. On our visit the theme was North Western Italy – see pic of menu. The food was different, with dishes that we would not have chosen – a bone marrow dish and a superb rabbit dish. There was also an option to join in with a glass of wine for each serving.
We chose to buy a bottle of white wine and then joined the wine menu at dessert – not your usual sweet sticky – infused with various herbs, including the bark from a Quinine tree.
As the title suggests – quirky and different. We enjoyed the occasion, but not cheap – A$80 per head (inc wine).

“Excellent staff, but something was lacking in the total experience”
Reviewed 1 October 2013

We visited Berta to celebrate a birthday, on the recommendation of fellow diners at a wine dinner, on a day which happened to be the Sydney Good Food Month Wine Regions of Italy - North East Region . We were warmly greeted and seated at a table which, frankly, was the pits, Cramped and one of us got 'bumped' by every waiter and staff member passing by. The staff quickly realised and then first tried to shift a table of diners out of our way, and when that failed, shifted us to another table. I saw the cramming of tables as visible evidence of a spreadsheet in operation in the running of this restaurant. Not good.
The deal was four course of food with the option of matching wines. We took the matching wines. The first course was an antipasto kind of thing. Lots of different little tastes. The standout for us with the asparagus, hazelnut and dandelion salad. The wine, to us, tasted oxidised and was not enjoyable. We spoke to the sommelier about this. She assured us that yes, it was oxidised, it was the style. Hmm, a style which is not for us. The second course was a beetroot ravioli with poppyseeds. OK, but the ravioli was a bit tough and chewy around the edges. The accompanying wine was delicious. The next course was mutton. Wow, I haven't had mutton since buying enormous legs of mutton, bought to feed eight, in my student days in the very dim past. This was a very different experience - it was good. The accompanying wine, ok. The dinner finished with apple fritters and a camomile cream concoction one of which came adorned with a birthday candle. One of us does not like fried desserts at all, so the other enjoyed both! The accompanying sticky wine, again, tasted 'oxidised'. A complimentary sorbet was served. V. nice. A very good coffee was served.

So, the food? Hit and miss. You could see what the chef was trying to do and a few things worked nicely. The rest? - one of those degustation dinners where the ingredients don't quite 'gell' and there is so little of them on the plate, that there is not the critical mass of food and flavour to enable a 'gell'. Yeah, something wasn't quite right.

This restaurant is incredibly noisy. It was full of the shouting 'eastern suburbs types' - blonde, 'out there' and with loud conversations focused on that 'fascinating' topic 'me, me, me'. very like Claudes in the 1980s, without the rampant smoking. The noise level was awful and detracted from the experience a lot.

The staff on the other hand were superb. They noticed our discomfort with the seating, made several attempts to fix it and then shifted us to the bar area where it was a lot more comforable. They were pleasant, welcoming, knew their food and wine and could have a good conversation. When we got the bill, we noticed a couple of 'comps'. Very very good - the best staff in Sydney we think.

We found the experience interesting, but I don't think we will return in a hurry.
