“Really, Really Awful”
Reviewed 6 August 2006

Stayed there with my partner as we were going out in Kings Cross that night, so we thought that it would be close by - and it looked relatively new from the outside. We didnt expect much beacuse of the price, but it was a truly awful stay.

Once we arrived we were told that they had checked for our booking (made on [--]), and that they could not check it until the manager arrived - an hour later. So we just waited around until then.

Once in the room, we found it to be dirty, small and old. Basically, i came to the conclusion that its main purpose would be for a cheap room for the working ladies on the cross.

The airconditioner was HUGE and LOUD, the bathroom was bigger than the actual room, and you could hear evryting going on in the corridors - word for word.

The next morning at 7am, despite booking the room for 2 nights to avoid having to check out early, the cleaner knocked on the door and told us to check out, when i told him we were staying for two nights, he told me i needed to go downstairs and book it, despite the fact i had.

After ignoring the cleaner, we came back after lunch to find that we had been locked out of the room. This was sorted quite easily, but no apologies or refunds were given.

Basically this Motel is run by incompetent people for those who are VERY budget consious.

My advise to people who are thinking of staying here...DONT. There are much better places to stay in Sydney for that price or a little more.

I have stayed with Formule 1 in Canberra and Campbelltown and have found them to be excellent value for money for the budget concious traveller and I have been back several times.
I like the no frills concept of this chain, you get the basics and why pay for more if you dont need it.They are the McDonalds of Motels.
The KIng Cross Formule 1 is located on busy William Street and as I am sensitive to noises at nightime I asked for a quiet room facing the back and was given a room on the 6th floor.at the rear. All seemed well untill night time when I heard a noisy air conditioning unit on top of the building which ran 24 hours a day, it felt like it was drilling into my brain causing me to to close the window at night. It became a bit stuffy in there because I like fresh air and the nights in Sydney were quite mild. There is an air conditioner supplied but it is way too noisy to have on all the time. Upon explaining the problem to reception they told me that the window should never have been able to be opened in the first place and subsequently screwed it shut. The other Formule 1 motels have opening windows which I thought was fantastic. There is no refund at all if you want to checkout early. I considered moving rooms however the choices were limited to another room on the same floor, the busy road side or a room with a noisy vending machine out in the corridor. I decided to stay put, bought ear plugs at the local chemist and unscrewed the window.
The Kings cross Formule 1 is not run by a husband and wife team that you find in the other regional motels and the cleanliness standard isnt as good as the others.
It is a relatively new modern looking building which looks inviting but noise control is abysmal.

Great value hotel. I didn't find Kings Cross really a bad area at all. Lots of shops and restaurants open late, lots of people around, i felt very safe there. This hotel is about 5 minutes walk to the Kings Cross train station, where in just a few minutes, you can be in the center of Sydney. No, it's not a Hilton, but it's also 1/6 the price. The room was very very basic. Almost like a prison cell, but it was totally clean, quiet and adequat size. The staff was friendly. Not much furniture in the room, just a cheap $5 chair, and a small counter. Not even a night table, but just fine. Good air conditioning and heat, but there was NO PHONE in the room. Remember, the price is 1/6 of the Hilton. I also liked that you could walk to the gay area on Oxford Street, about 20 minute walk. Lots of restaurants on the way there, and in that area. If you must be in central Sydney, be prepared to pay the price. Honestly, it's only a 5 minute walk and a 5 minute train from the Kings Cross station to central Sydney. I think the tran was about $2 Australian one way. I also walked to the Hard Rock Cafe, which was about a 15 minute walk away. They don't give shampoo, only a bar of soap, so bring your own shampoo and save. Overall, highly recommended for what it was. I'm told some of the rooms on high floors have a view of Sydney.

This is a new but budget hotel in the notorious Kings Cross section of Sydney. However it is not located on the main red light district street. The small room with bath was comfortable enough and clean but quite minimal. It had a queen bed and a bunk bed which took up most of the room. The air conditioner and alarm clock were hard to operate since they were wedged into small and inaccessible places. There was a cable TV but no phone. Some reading lights would have been nice. I had a spectacular view of the harbor, bridge, and opera house (not all rooms have it though) and I even saw a fireworks display as a bonus. For the price they charge for a Sydney CBD location, you can't complain - just be sure you know what you're getting!
