Stayed there for a week in June in a dorm converted from a from a train carriage, and it was a very unique experience to stay 'right beside a station platform'.

No worries though, the sound insulation was perfectly done and it was very comfortable.

The only complain for the hostel is that the kitchen is a little disorganised with lots of 'out of order' equipments.

Room Tip: Choose "Railway Compartments" instead of the ordinary room

Hi Matchmantravel
Thanks for your review and feedback, which is very important to us. This hostel has a large kitchen with lots of cooking areas. One double cooking point was broken over a weekend recently, but it was repaired on the Monday and everything is now fully working.
Enjoy your trip to Australia.

I stayed in a quadshare in the main building - rooms are a decent size, I found the lockers a little on the small side. Enough sockets and very clean bathrooms.

The kitchen is nice and clean, and the lounge is nicely furnished. The hostel itself is very charming, with the rail carriages outside, and lots of quirky artwork.

Location is perfect, especially if you are travelling on - buses and trains right there.

Staff were friendly - but I had to wait several times, while they were immersed in private conversations. I know it's a YHA and no hotel, but that did get on my nerves after a while. Also, I wouldn't recommend booking travel through reception if you don't exactly know what you want. I got some wrong information on a bus pass and would have ended up paying 20$ more than necessary. But as it's a hostel and no travel agency, so that's no biggie.

Would go there again!

I've stayed there a couple of times over the last few years. It's hands down cleaner and friendlier than any other backpackers I've been to in this country, and even though there's plenty of action in the communal areas the noise doesn't travel into the rooms.
Great location, easy to get to the train station (a street over), bus station (Same street) and a short walk to Darling Harbour, China Town, CBD, the markets or anywhere else. The building is modern and aesthetically pleasing and the pool is a nice touch, though I've only every seen one or two people actually use it.
The walls are decorated with beautiful photos taken by YHAs around the world, which is a nice.

There are advertised tours/activities/party nights that they run, but as I haven't partaken in these I cannot comment.

Rooms are clean, toilets and showers are clean, communal kitchen area and eatery is clean and plenty of crockery and utensils to use.

Staff are friendly and easy to find should the need arise.

The double en-suite room is surprisingly spacious for a backpackers.
The double room is less spacious, but still nice.
Both have the standard single over a double bunk bed. Towels and linen are supplied. There is air conditioning in the rooms we've stayed in.
4 bed dorms are two bunk beds, good sized.

The only drawback is that there isn't any parking. (Or if there is, it's always booked out whenever we go there.) We generally park in the Hays Market parking, which has sometimes been cheap, sometimes expensive depending on what time of the day/night we arrive/leave. $25-$83 for a weekend stay.)

Room Tip: The double with en-suite is the best. It's cheaper than a Hotel, but better quality than a good...

My wife and I stayed 1 night at this hostel for the first time and were very pleasantly surprised. We had a double ensuite room, which was a really good size, plenty of room for our packs etc. The ensuite/shower was capacious with excellent instant hot water. The room had the usual YHA bed, with a double bed under a single bunk, but plenty of room, and the single upper bunk gives more storage space. We didn't use the self-catering kitchen, but checked it out and were very impressed by its size and facilities. The hostel's location is so convenient-only 100m from Central Railway Station, and within easy walking distance to Chinatown and its myriad variety of restaurants, the Spanish quarter in Goulburn street, and the George Street cinema complex. The room was spotlessly clean, and staff were friendly and helpful. There is no parking, but, as we caught the train to Sydney, not having to worry about parking in Sydney CBD was a bonus. Definitely a superior YHA hostel, and we will definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: Room 204 - quiet and very convenient to stairs etc. Excellent ensuite double room.
