Owner description: The working class did it tough in Sydney in the 19th Century. View the laundry copper, backyard dunny, worn lino, tiny kitchens and crowded living quarters when you visit this rare surviving example of a working class terrace. Then stock up on sweets in the old corner shop. Open daily 2pm-5pm. Museum access is by guided tour only. Tours can be pre-booked by phone or same day tickets are available for purchase in the shop (subject to availability). Adult $8. Concession $4, Family $17. Sydney Living Museums members free.

This museum is charming and brimming with history. For a very reasonable price you will be treated to a guided tour of the 3 houses and the shop. The knowledgable guide will take you through stories of the people that lived in the houses and the surrounding community and also a wider history of Sydney and The Rocks area itself in which these houses are located. By preserving and not restoring these buildings you feel totally immersed in the history and it creates a real atmosphere. Whether you are in Sydney only briefly or for a while you must make this part of your visit. Highly recommended.

Loved the whole Rocks area, and this is a gem of a place. The "tour" (more sitting than walking) of the 4 terraced houses takes approx 1,5 hours and takes max 10 people at a time. I loved it. We got a real impression of the various times and lives of some of the people who lived in the Rocks over the last 150 years. Our guide Erin was brilliant. Really gave life to the walls and furniture and fittings. Some children on the tour, and she handled them brilliantly. Engaged them and kept them interested. Great way for kids to learn about "olden days". Beware only tours at 2pm, 3pm and 4pm. And only 10 pax per tour. No general access apart from tours. So book in advance! (Very reasonable fee compared to most entrance fees in Sydney. Or buy a "Museum pass" which includes Hyde Park Barracks and 2 others).

By design, the buildings are pretty much as they would have been when last lived in so they are not all that much to look at. The docent who provides the tour is the key to bringing the tour to life. The visit takes about an hour so is a nice break in a days touring about.

A really interesting little guided tour. You can only go three times a day and tours are limited to 10 people, so don't think you can just turn up and go. But I found it fascinating to step back in time and see how people used to live.

If you enjoy a slice of living history then this will be up your street. This was actually very fascinating. I was glad it was held as a tour rather than an open museum as I really don't think I'd have got enough out of it. Our guide was obviously enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the property and it was a great way to see a slice of Sydney across various time periods.
My only surprise is that someone was living in them as recently as 1990!
