The food was OK, that was all. The service was attentive but we had higher hopes than what was delivered. What was especially disappointing was the Pork Cutlets from the Tasting Menu. They were thinly slice but was done WITH the BONE still attached.

We were heading down to Sydney for a quick visit,so, my daughter suggested we visit Luke's Red Lantern as we love his television shows. We decided on Riley Street, as it was in walking distance of our accommodation in the CBD. I only rang a few days before arriving in Sydney and managed to get a table. We dined here on a Thursday night. The service was wonderful, the staff very friendly and attentive. The food was absolutely fabulous.
We decided to try the Hanoi Hunger Banquet to give us a few different dishes to taste, and we weren't disappointed. 4 entrees, 4 mains and 3 desserts to share. We were a bit worried about duck being included as an entree, as it is something we never usually order in restaurants, but it was the best we have ever tasted.
The beef included in the mains, was melt in your mouth delicious.
We couldn't fault any of the dishes. And it was certainly enough food for the 3 of us.
We will definitely visit this restaurant when we are back in Sydney.
The atmosphere reminded us of a fabulous holiday in Vietnam

We dined here on Easter Monday, a little hesitant having read a number of reviews in the previous 6 months which hadn't been favourable, still as we have followed Lukes adventures on telly for a number of years and love Vietnamese food we decided to chance it. Caught the bus from Circular Quay which literally drops you outside his restaurant. A very unassuming place, spotted by the 'red lanterns' - no big "look at me signs' ablaze. We chose to sit outside on the balcony and was surprised how few people inside/out were also dining. We were greeted and served by a lovely guy - Brian who explained dishes and certainly didn't rush us into deciding what to order. We went with the 'Hanoi Hunger' banquet at $69pp. It gives you 4 entrees/4 mains and they were lovely, especially the spanner crab salad. The dishes we had were magnificent, so fresh/delicate and tasty - just like when we were in Vietnam for holidays. On mentioning that the last dish - lemongrass & chilli caramel chicken was very dry, (we still ate it), Brian appeared with a magnificent dessert for us as an apology, saying they always wanted customers to leave feeling happy....we certainly did.

I would have no hesitation in eating here again. Being a Monday night, we were surprised also seeing the many restaurants directly across the road (Italian, Korean, Turkish, Vietnamese, Pakistani) were also empty!

It's taken far too long, but we finally got the chance to have a much anticipated meal at Luke Nguyen's Red Lantern restaurant during a recent stay in Sydney. As a fan of Luke's television shows and Vietnamese food in general, I had high expectations. The staff were friendly and efficient and we were welcomed on arrival and taken to our table by, as I later learned, Luke's younger brother. I could see the family resemblance. The restaurant, a converted terrace house in Surrey Hills, is cosy, dark and delightfully atmospheric with family photos and other personal touches decorating the rooms.

But in the end it is the food that we came for and we were not disappointed. It was tough deciding off the menu, but my wife and I chose to share our entrees and main dishes to maximise the tasting experience. The ingredients were fresh with just the right amount of spices and perfectly prepared and served. One of the highlights was the Banh Bot Chien - Pan-fried rice cakes with prawns, caramelised pork and, my new taste sensation, pork floss. Also recommend the Dau Phu Chien - Crisp tofu wok tossed with beans, greens and tomato chilli jam. Our other dishes included free range pork cutlets with a fennel salad, a chicken poached in coconut milk with banana blossom salad and a water spinach side dish. Also couldn't resist finishing with Luke's take on the traditional banana fritter - Chuoi Chien - organic banana fritters crumbed in coconut and white rice, palm sugar caramel and tapioca sauce with vanilla bean ice cream. The wine list was good, if a little pricey, and we chose a recommended Portuguese white which was the perfect accompaniment for our food.

I would most definitely recommend dining at Red Lantern and hope to return before too long. Perhaps Luke should now consider opening a restaurant in Melbourne?

We booked a table two months in advance and were really looking forward to trying Red Lantern. The food was great and certainly met our (high) expectations. However, the service was nothing short of appalling. We were rushed throughout the meal - to order, to finish our pre-dinner cocktails, and at each course (we ordered the menu). While the waiter was clearing our plates, he mentioned that we couldn't have dessert because there wasn't time before the next table was due to arrive! That we would be on such a tight time limit was never mentioned when we booked or confirmed - we would have cancelled had we known - so we were not happy to be treated this way. If you don't mind fast service and eat quickly then maybe you won't mind, but we wanted to enjoy meal, bottle of wine, and actually order dessert.
