This area is very well preserved and provides a great representation of the historic equipment and plant of over a century ago.

The telegraph station was what caused the town of Alice Spring to be created where it was, and this visit is well worth the short journey out of town. It puts the whole development of the outback of Australia into perspective, and you can even post letters here, a most unusual souvenir. The buildings have been well preserved, and the station's history well demonstrated. The welcome cafe and inevitable souvenir shop is another bonus.

The telegraph station is a must see, it is a pity that not all buildings have access. You get to see through glass doors and reflection of the sun is bad the view can be limited.

Our guide, Alex was part aborigine/part European and grew up on the site of the telegraph station. Several buildings furnished as in the 1800s show how the first European settlers lived and worked in Alice Springs and a static display showed how the two cultures lived together there.

This was a great little historical site and taught me much about communication in Australia. The preservation of the buildings and area is very well done and it was great to see the 'springs' after which the town was named. You can go on a number of longer walks which we didn't do and also hire bikes to ride around the area which looked like fun if we had the time. It would obviously be hot to do that in the summer but winter was a perfect time to visit. There was a little eating area which had nice looking sandwiches and cakes (although we didn't eat there). Good hot chocolate!
