We stayed 2 nights in a spa room in late October and were pleasantly surprised. Yes, you're paying a premium for the location, but the accommodation itself is quite decent.
The Cafe/restaurant feels a bit low-rent considering the price of the rooms, but the quality of the evening meals was quite good. For the $30 plus asking price however the full breakfast really should be better. We had a deal which included breakfast in the room rate, otherwise the asking price would really sting.
Regarding the staff, I have to single out Greg for special praise (who was working in the restaurant in the evenings as well as watering the garden in the morning). Relaxed, outback manner, but attentive, professional and very efficient at the same time. And a genuinely nice bloke too.
Occupancy seemed to be extremely low, with many rooms empty - it felt like a bit of a ghost town. The spa pump in the unit next to ours seemed very noisy, but perhaps that was because I had got up at 7am in Sydney, flown to Alice, then driven to Kings Canyon via the Mereenie loop the same day:)
The swimming pool was icy cold. Having planned to spend an hour or so in the water, we had to get out after 10 minutes because our 2 year old was shivering and blue. Don't know how they keep the water so cold given the daytime heat.
