“Surprisingly nice.”
Reviewed 7 November 2013

We stayed 2 nights in a spa room in late October and were pleasantly surprised. Yes, you're paying a premium for the location, but the accommodation itself is quite decent.

The Cafe/restaurant feels a bit low-rent considering the price of the rooms, but the quality of the evening meals was quite good. For the $30 plus asking price however the full breakfast really should be better. We had a deal which included breakfast in the room rate, otherwise the asking price would really sting.

Regarding the staff, I have to single out Greg for special praise (who was working in the restaurant in the evenings as well as watering the garden in the morning). Relaxed, outback manner, but attentive, professional and very efficient at the same time. And a genuinely nice bloke too.

Occupancy seemed to be extremely low, with many rooms empty - it felt like a bit of a ghost town. The spa pump in the unit next to ours seemed very noisy, but perhaps that was because I had got up at 7am in Sydney, flown to Alice, then driven to Kings Canyon via the Mereenie loop the same day:)

The swimming pool was icy cold. Having planned to spend an hour or so in the water, we had to get out after 10 minutes because our 2 year old was shivering and blue. Don't know how they keep the water so cold given the daytime heat.

Room Tip: You're paying a bomb anyway, so you may as well splurge on a spa room!

Your review is appreciated and we welcome the feedback regarding Greg, he is a terrific bloke and an important part of our team - I will certainly pass you comments onto him.

Our remote location certainly presents us with some challenges with logistics and costs however we endeavour to keep rates to acceptable and affordable levels. It is surprising I think to find such large spa rooms at the end of such a long journey.

Best regards

Whilst this is an expensive hotel, the location is amazing. Kings Canyon is certainly a place worth a visit. The rooms are a little tired but they are spacious and welcoming. Bathrooms are also very large. Easy walking distance to the local pub and garage and also viewing platform for sunset viewing of Kings Canyon. Wow what a view it is. The changing colours of the night sky and also the canyon are amazing. Be quick to get back to the pub for a table for dinner. I can tell you this is the beat steak I have had in some time! Real flavour of the meat was amazing and the port jus was delicious. Our waitress from Tassie was friendly and welcoming and willing to have a bit of a chat. King Canyon rim walk is truly amazing and while the first 500 steps are a bit of a tough climb, you will not be disappointed with the sight that you will be seeing.

Appreciate the review and so pleased the Steak exceeded your expectation!

We agree the sunset on Carmichaels Crag is stunning, almost steals the limelight from the actual Canyon Rim Walk and is rarely mentioned, a must see.

For the price you pay you would expect the little things to be right! We had the luxury spa suite and the mattresses were very uncomfortable and need updating. No towels available around the pool unless you go to reception and ask. Some of the room essentials need to be replenished so make sure you check your room when you checkin. Even though there is a 24 hour reception they don't have access to things like insect sprays or tissues so make sure you check your room and get your essentials before everyone goes home for the day... Kings Canyon is certainly worth the time to see, the resort however need to step up.

Room Tip: Check your room that the essentials have all been replenished.

What do you expect for $390 a night? More than this, most likely. The rooms are nice enough, but it's the remote location that drives the price so high. Kings Canyon Resort is the only option we found that offered an ensuite, so we paid the price. And if that's the price of seeing Kings Canyon, it's well worth the cost - the Canyon was one of the top highlights of our three weeks in Australia. The "Thirsty Dingo" was a unique experience. It was fun chatting and mingling with other holidayers at the barbeque bar. The singalong music may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it certainly adds "local colour!"

Our remote location does present many logistical and cost challenges and please be assured that we do endeavour to keep our prices to acceptable levels. Your understanding of these challenges is very much appreciated.

Hope you have an opportunity to visit us again in the future......

It was about double the price, but we decided on the resort over the lodge to have our own bathroom. The room was basic and we slept well there but, even taking the remote location into account, it seemed overpriced. We looked at the lodge accommodation and would stay there if we returned. We arrived just after 2 and our room was not ready -- we had not realised check in was 3 pm. No towels provided for the pool, we were told to use the towels from our room. The (male) staff member at checkout was unenthusiastic and unhelpful, sadly, the service at the resort did not match the price. But kings canyon is stunning!

Room Tip: Those closest to reception are also closest to the hotel and bistro, across the road.

We had a great time here where we relaxed in our spa room with a view, had amazing food, gorgeous scenery and very friendly staff. The local muso's "The Roadies" were great, played great music and offered much more!!
We would love to visit again!

Our stay in the resort was not initially intended as a part of our trip however it turned out to be the best overnight stay in 2 weeks. First of all we were upgraded to spa room at no extra cost. This room was cool, spacious and the pillows so good I checked the label! Everything was super clean, quiet, beautiful scenery onto desert landscapes and helpful staff. Definitely recommend. Our meal at the bistro was quick, tasty and again friendly courteous staff.

Room Tip: Spa rooms have great views and quiet.
