Stayed here again, 2nd time in 14 months. Had lagoon room on 1st floor again, still as nice as before. BUT..... The receptionists as before are not very welcoming!! Very matter of fact, very don't care attitude. Shame really! Had to spend last night in a superior spa room as lagoon rooms all booked out . Never again!! Really expensive for what it is. Room is very adequate but has no view at all. On ground floor, huge bushes outside sliding door, people walking past all hours of the night, not quietly. Not at all private. Expected to at least have a view or a room on a par with the lagoon room that was only $70 more anyway!! But the worst thing was the smell! All night all we could smell was Mildew. It was really bad!
So, still the best hotel in Darwin but only if you stay in new side.king lagoon rooms. Still think for the top $ you pay tho that breakfast would be included or at least reduced. Also just a note, in the dry season, the pool is extremely cold!! No one really using it for this reason & that was very disappointing !

Room Tip: Don't go past King Lagoon Rooms!

We travelled to Darwin up the Gibb River Road. After all those corrogations it was great to stay in the luxury of the Casino Resort. Great swim up bar and the meals at the restaurants were also great. Check in staff very helpful also. Would also recommend having treatment done at the day spa, the ladies there were very friendly and the massage was awesome.

Stayed two nights on a beach front unit on the third floor. It was whilst Territory Day was on and we wanted a good view of the Mindil Beach fireworks. The room we were in gave us that. Very small balcony though, so don't invite too many friends to share the view. Also a very large step to get to the balcony and the door would not stay open. The room was comfortable and the amenities excellent. Great pool and plenty of choices of places to eat. Quite a distance from Darwin CBD though. Would be happy to stay again.

I have stayed here twice for business and find Skycity the best for whats on offer around Darwin. Only a couple of minutes drive to the Darwin main drag Skycity offers beach views a geared down atmosphere and some good restaurants although some of the casino patrons can taint the atmosphere a little. Rooms in the older hotel section are OK although the carpet deodoriser and overall dark atmosphere of the rooms can take a little getting use to. Buffet breakfast provides a great feed with everything you need for a decent bacon and egg. The packed lunch service is also convenient for those heading out to site were facilities are limited.

We spent 2 nights at the YHA (3 of us in a private room) before transferring to Skycity to indulge for 2 nights. Not convinced it was worth it.
To compare - rooms were about same size, both had ensuites about same size and same facilities (although Skycity had mould in bottom of shower), both had small desk table, both had air conditioners. Both places had pools (yha smaller but pleasant, Skycity 2 much, much fancier pools but more crowded) For 2 nights, YHA cost me $250, Skycity $710. Skycity room did have a very small rather ugly, balcony that looked onto neighbours and a roof top, but we couldn't access it anyway as sliding door was locked and we weren't given a key. On the other hand, YHA had BBQ area and fully equipped kitchen. Staff at YHA helpful and friendly, reception staff at Skycity friendly, although concierge basically ignored everyone and didn't go out of his way to do anything.
Parking at YHA was free in a secure gated area inside the grounds. Cars at Skycity park in the public park in front of the casino, unless you pay an extra $15 per night to park in the closer boom gated area which is still open for anyone to walk in to.

I also advise avoiding the Sunset restaurant at Skycity. We went on schnitzel night and the food was terrible. It is the cheaper family place, rather like a bowling club atmosphere, but we paid $86 for 2 plain schnitzels and one Parma that were very average with extremely undercooked vegetables that were nearly cold. I could have paid less and got better at a pub.

Overall, if you like to holiday in a glamorous looking place and spend your time in a pool or casino then Skycity may suit you but if you are a traveller looking for a base while you check out the sights then you can do much better for less cost.

Room Tip: If you afford the best, swim up rooms, go for it, otherwise check where you are located, especially...

If you read the reviews on Darwin accommodation you will realise there is not a lot between most of them as standards are generally low but Skycity is a stand out from the rest. An excellent resort hotel and if you are not a casino fan do not be perturbed. It is separate enough that you can avoid it completely but it is right there if it is your thing. There are various configurations of rooms including some lovely ones backing right on to one of the pools. My wife and my 17 yo daughter stayed in a single suite. We had an extra bed put in the living area and there was tons of room for us all. These have an en suite plus another toilet, and a large living space. Nice balconies with a various views of the pools and out to sea.

There are two large very nice pools, one infinity style looking out over the beach and one with it' s own sand beach and swim up bar.

Another plus is the guest laundry and small but useful gym, the very good health spa and a big plus is the free wireless.

A big highlight is the location itself. Right on mindil beach which although no one swims here ( due to the concerns around stingers and crocs) it is nice to walk/sunbathe on, has spectacular sunsets and has one of the must do's of Darwin, the craft and food markets every Thursday and Sunday.

The botanical gardens are across the road and worth a visit, near the entrance is a lovely cafe,Eva's, that is fantastic for breakfast .

If you are a walking couple/ family the Darwin museum (see separate reviews) is a 30 min walk, along the beach and over the hill past the Darwin secondary school. There is a reasonable cafe attached to the museum for brunch/lunch. Likewise it is a 30 min walk to town or 20 over the hill to a little marina home to the excellent Yots Greek restaurant and La Beach for wonderful fish and chips(see separate reviews)

If you have come to Darwin you will know all of the attractions of the region. They are well covered elsewhere but one point I will mention (especially for overseas visitors who may have seen the pictures of rugged country) is that some beautiful parts of the region can be enjoyed in a standard 2 wheel drive car. Some lovely parts of Kakadu (ancient rock paintings and beautiful views of the region at Ubirr and Nourlangie for example) can be done in a one day driving trip from Darwin. Make sure you stop for a beer in the very typical outback pub, the Bark Tree Inn on the way home. Even more so Lichfield National park which is about an hours drive to view the spectacular Florence falls and Berry springs( see separate reviews for these two great spots)

Negative points of the hotel are:
room air conditioning was a bit too cold for us and other guests we discussed it with.
Oddly despite the heat of the days the pools are always really cold
The restaurants are mostly poor and I would recommend only one which is Cove, which is especially good for breakfast . Sunset is an all you can eat buffet disaster with bad service, il piatto is a lovely looking Italian restaurant with mixed service and average food. We did not try their top venue Evoo based on the other bad experiences.
Finally the security here can be overly officious, and sitting in the front pool over looking the beach it is annoying to repeatedly get asked if you are staying here.

Overall though I would highly recommend this hotel for couple or families.

Room Tip: The rooms backing on to the sand beach pool look lovely with their step of your back porch into the...

we recently stayed at the skycity hotel in darwin. we choosed this after reading the reviews on tripadvisor . there was my wife and i and our 6 year old son. this is not a place for families or tourists. it is a place for gamblers and they cater only for gamblers. being asians , we felt discriminated and the caucasian staff were only friendly to other caucasians or gamblers. there were many instances where the caucasian staff would not even look at us or would just walk pass us without a hello. we stayed at the hotel in 2 blocks from the 4 june to the 11 june. we stayed at the deluxe lagoon room. the room was not cheap and comparable to sydney and melbourne. the room although quite new was dirty. the floors and bathroom were filty. my wife and i had to literally clean the all the floor. the patio leading to the pool was also filty. even the bottom of the pool was filty. it was covered with debris and dirt. the photos speak for themselves. we tried to eat at the chinese restaurant and the service was slow and unfriendly. on our only visit there , we waited for over 20 minutes to be served and eventually walked out. the prices there were also excessive. for example the mud crab was selling for over $100 per kilo but you could buy the same from an outside vendor called mr. barra for $30 per kilo. on our last night the air conditioning was not working and i had to demand for them not to charge us for that one night which the manager relented. i have since voiced my complaint to the sales manager and have received a reply from the operations manager. this is not a hotel if you expect to feel welcomed or clean rooms. i would try the hilton instead , which is in a better location. we felt ripped off .
