“Comfortable hotel and friendly, helpful staff”
Reviewed 14 July 2009

While the rooms were basic, they were spacious, and very clean. Not an insect in sight. A hotplate, microwave, toaster plus cutlery, pots and pans etc, made self-cooking easy. The apartment also had a large fridge to keep drinks and food cold. The fan and airconditioning keep the room cool and I had a nice view from my balcony. The swimming pool was clean and refreshing. I stayed for four nights and found the place comfortable and very cool. A bonus is that it is right in the middle of the city, close to restaurants, shops and the esplanade. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

If you like seeing huge bins of dirty laundry (sheets / towels) inches from your face every time you go up to your room then this is the place for you. Otherwise you will find it extremely unhygenic and unpleasant visually. Reception staff refused to move the bins, which were left in the corridor outside the elevator, saying they were removed daily. Reality: the bins were removed only every 5 to 7 days.

In the room, TV reception was very poor and despite numerous requests never got the in-house movies. Aircon was inadequate for Darwin heat and humidity.

On the plus side: Off season it was , by high priced Darwin standards, reasonable value.

Having travelled most of the third world on a budget, this hotel trumps as one of my worst stays.

There was constant construction noise to the front (which starts early and goes all weekend), frequent partying to the back, and some dodgy goings on in the building (rooms by the hour?).

I was here for 3 weeks until my workplace found alternative accommodation (it was the only choice left in Darwin) and was moved 4 times over the course of the stay.

General observations: the doors dont lock in several rooms, the 'kitchen' is only a microwave, bar fridge, hotplate and sink, the carpets are universally filthy, the air con rivalled a red rattler and the TV was on its last legs. As a woman, there was a general feeling of being unsafe after dark in the building on Friday/Saturday nights.

On the plus side, there is a large-ish pool and a BBQ which some residents enjoyed, but its overlooked by all units and the noise travels day and night. There is a great bakery on the gound floor with chilli sausage rolls, and the location is good for the city.

But for what you get, the rates are extraordinarily high. Small mercy was that I was not footing the bill!

Recently stayed here for work - and got the 'discounted' rate of A$185 per night.
Room was clean but at best functional with a knackered TV with limited channels, low grade aircon and a small bathroom.
Dedcor was limited to painted concrete block walls.
Location wise this is a good hotel but facilities are severely lacking.
Staff seemed friendly.
Horrendously over-priced but in line with most Darwin hotels in that respect.

Our whole experience with Luma Luma was depressing. We were charged four star prices for accomodation which was sub-standard. The walls were made of Besser block, the paint old and tired. The kitchen consisted of a white melamine cupboard, bar fridge(leaking, with towel on the bottom) and an outdated electric stove. The lounge was an old cane sofa bed full of large rips, with old tissues still left underneath.
There was one blanket for the five of us, and we asked for more and were given one. There were no clock radios, no clocks, and no information folder. We were given extra pillows when we asked.
At night time the cockroaches crawled through everything, up through the stove, through the sink in the bathroom, and over the children' beds. I sprayed around the sink with aerogard to keep them off the bread. We couldn't stomach eating there . We were told that these bugs were a chronic problem and were given spray. One kitchen chair and a caravan type table for the five of us really topped it all off.

  • Liked — centre of Darwin
  • Disliked — cockroaches, extremely poor standard, no "how was your stay"!!!!
