“Hostile and violent owner”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 May 2014

The hostel is not clean. Conditions were unsanitary in the kitchen and bathroom. The owner will kick you out if you complain about anything. He is extremely violent and impulsive and will literally throw your belongings out the door. If you upset him he will scream expletives at the top of his lungs at you. I thought he was going to hit me and I am a woman. Beware.

Thought I'd try this place out as seemed reasonable for the room.
No aircon anywhere !
Room had window without net or blind
Fridges full and small kitchen.
Was quiet at night.
Staff very rude big put off as they live there too.
Microwave was clean tho!

Stayed for around 6 weeks a few months ago. The place itself is nice enough, has a lot of personality and is pretty standard hostel fare, plus it's way cheaper than anything you can get in the area. It's a little run down maybe but nothing really dirty or terrible, I loved the place, kind of a big cool old house feel. It's small so the people staying all got to know each other, it was a great group like a big sharehouse with friends. I met some of the best friends I've ever met here.

The only problems I have with the place are the managers. It was a couple who seemed nice enough on arrival but they were pretty unsociable. They kept to themselves and didn't really talk to anyone, fair enough. Eventually they became actively hostile and elected not to allow some of the long termers to extend their stay. They were extremely rude and unprofessional about it, barging into the room on the days assumed to be when we would pay rent and ordering that we leave immediately with no prior warning or explanation at all. The words "get your stuff and get out" were used to one girl and we had no idea why, she was the quietest of the group and was always nice to them and everyone else. When we tried to talk to them about it they gave really vague reasons like being loud and smoking on the outdoor stairs (which people sometimes did late at night when nobody was around or using them). Maybe we made some noise socialising in the garden a couple of times a week but it was a residential area so we always left the place if it was still going around 12ish and tried to keep it reasonable.

When pushed they admitted that they just didn't like us being a group and wanted to "not have it like this in future with you guys cooking together and socialising as a group". I think they were pretty depressed and unhappy living there and probably shouldn't be working in a hostel, I'm not even angry I just feel sorry for them. It was a shame and I can't recommend the place to anyone even though I had a great time there without a change of management.

Great place to stay as not too big and not too small. Easy access with bus stop just outside this place, take 196 or 199 to go to city. IGA supermarket close by which is open 6am to midnight each day. Internet is close by, $2 -20 min or $2 - 30 min at "the Mall" which is about 10 min walk. Hosts are great and met some awesome people here. Nice relaxed feel to the place and windows open so fresh air is no problem. Thorough clean of amenities around 8am each day and plenty of room to move in the showers / toilets. Would suit people that are looking for a "non commercial feel" place to stay.

Room Tip: Only stayed in two rooms and they were ok.

no matter if you staying for 1 night or 1 year, this hostel will suit most peoples wants and needs, its clean, tidy, well maintained, the staff are very friendly and happy to help where possible. I stayed here for a few months and had a great time, if your a normal down to earth person then you will have a good experience. no doubt.
Its relaxed and chilled out most of the time, but always opertunity for fun and good times. during my 14 months in australia i stayed in many many hostels...... blue tongue backpackers was the best all round.

Room Tip: no difference

I had some good expectations of this place, i had booked via email and had found the staff to be nice and reasonable online. Once arriving to the place i thought it looked a lot worse than the photos on the website, but didn't really worry because it was cheap and you get that sometimes. Upon going in and being shown into our room we realised that there wasn't any air con or fans and it was boiling hot, also the bunk beds inside the room had tape holding them together :|. The showers were crap and had nowhere to put your stuff while you showered, BUT we put up with all this just because again, it was pretty cheap. But the last straw came in the morning of our departure, we had to catch an early flight, we were up and ready to go and i had to return our key and sheets and get the key deposit back. I knocked lightly on the office door only to have the manager or whoever she is, stick head out of the door groggily, and i said hey i'm sorry to wake up but we have to leave, she replied by rolling her eyes and rudely stating to me that " Dude, it's six in the bloody morning, Just dump your stuff down there" we then did so and then i gave her the key and said thanks and sorry again, which she replied with by saying nothing and shaking her head. I think she forget who was paying her, anyway, DON'T STAY HERE.

Found this place to be nice and different from the others. Good facilities, nice people and friendly atmosphere. Was a bit put off by having to give a deposit for cutlery set but it was only $10 and soon realised that more hostels should do it, it meant the kitchen was always clean and tidy as people actually did there dishes so they could get there deposit back. It's a very casual laid back hostel and great family feel. Felt very welcomed by the management and other backpackers as soon as we all arrived.
