“Never Again”
Reviewed 1 March 2012

A group of us stayed at this backpackers for 2 nights - prior to the booking phoned and confirmed that I could book a female only dorm for our group to be together, no worries note it in the comments section ect, so followed directions and booked on line. Arrived at 11pm Friday Night, drunks out on the steps, door locked, reception eventually let us in - wish I could of backed out right there and then.. No chance of us getting our request of same room for group (booked 3 weeks earlier) group scattered throughout maze of dorm rooms, anyway found a bed (fend for yourself) common area was disgusting, plates with food, cups, bras, shoes, old magazines, hair driers and straightners all over the floor in front of the mirror, no air con, all windows closed - stunk. Tired went to sleep - only one sheet on bed - damm - made do.
In the morning, picked up plates and cups, cleared couch of clothes, looked everywhere for a cloth to wipe bench (no luck). Then on the balcony - ciggy but tin sitting there, with about 30 butts scattered around it - WTF- This is a ladies area. Cleaned it up. Anyway started getting ready for the day, tip toed around cause everyone was still asleep at 9am, found the showers, closed for cleaning?? had to wait till she was finished (don't know what she did cause they were disgusting) first in after the clean. Went out for the day, came back to get ready for a night out, girls still asleep in room, had to tip toe around again. Did find another toilet and shower in the dorm, but shower base was filled with emply product bottles, counted 15, clothes in piles over the floor and vanity (clothes made a good bath mat as none in sight) Had a couple of drinks on the balcony, picked up the smoke butts again, chatted with a couple of the young back packers girls, working in the cityand living in this dump, they couldn't care less about the mess. Went out for the night had a great time, fell to sleep exhausted. Next morning sitting on the balcony - butts, emply booze tins, towels, rubbish, plate with half eaten weat bix, MAN - obviously the tennents couldn't care less. 9..30 am young british back packer (who hasn't spoken a word to us the whole time) come out to the balcony and asks us to keep our voices down and have some RESPECT as she is trying to sleep, has worked night shiit and can't sleep. We tried to explain we weren't being noisy, having a cuppa and chat, door was closed and she was in another room, (also another asleep on the couch in the common room) wouldn't listen to us, just complained louder, suggested she should seek alternative accomodation if she needs to sleep all day (as she had the day before) and we were here on holday and would continue to chat - in the end had to tell her to [--] and leave us alone. I could go on on, very dissapointed in every sense. I have stayed in many backpackers over the last 30 years and this one gets the prize of worst ever, maintenance, atmosphere, women travellers, disgusting spaces and zero care factor. Never Again, do your self a favour and just don't stay here.

This is probably the most damming review I hope to have to write. I had a bad experience in Perth with a hostel but that was the owner not the hostel.

This hostel horrible do no stay here! They should be ashamed of what they are peddling in their brochures. The showers are horrible and very dirty. They are not cubical style which doesn't bother me but could be off putting to some of the more prudish travellers. The main fact is that they are dirty. The rooms are so smelly and have no air circulation at all. If you open the windows you are choked with the fumes from the busy intersection outside. Even the common areas are in a bad way. The kitchen has bathroom towels for drying dishes, the fridges take your breath away when opened. The place leaks like a sift in the rain and as for the death trap they call a lift well take the stairs if you do stay. Base should be ashamed of itself for the state of this property.

Don't even consider it unless it's knocked down and built again! The staff are travellers and are nice but I feel sorry for them working here. It's not a great reflection on their integrity to work in a place like this.

Room Tip: One in another hostel!

The moment i walked into base central i wished i hadn't booked there, i had 3 nights there through a steal deal where i could have chosen either base embassy or base central... i made the wrong decision, it stunk of damp! every floor was disgusting, cockroaches were just casually roaming the halls, it was very dark in the halls, the showers were awful, the washing machines were terrible and kept jamming when you put your money in, the room to be fair wasn't bad but i could have done with a lick of paint and a hoover around, the staff weren't very friendly overall i would not recommend.

Got here after a long delay to my flight. Check in was quick and the german guy (Robert??) was very helpfull and informative. All of the reception staff that I spoke to during the 4 days I was there were very helpfull and pointed me in the rite direction. The room was basic but very clean and the buncks appeaed to be new. Zi Zi bar which is under the hostel does a $10 meal and a pint in the evening. Food was great, cooked well and basic and very cheap. Staff were really good to. There is a nightclub in the basement of the hostel which is quite cheap and a good laugh. There is only one problem, you seem to be able to hear the music in there all over the hostel till 4am. TIP:- Use the showers on the 4th floor. They are much cleaner and private and it dosnt appear that anyone uses them. I will be back.

We wanted to stay somewhere central for our stop over in Brisbane and thought this would be perfect as the location couldnt be better.......shame about everything else. We booked a private double room for a few nights knowing that we'd have a basic set-up which suited us fine but we weren't prepared for this.... our room was horrible, dirty and beyond basic and quite simply being in the room made my skin crawl. If we hadnt have been so jetlagged from our journey we would have gone to find somewhere else to stay asap! We lasted one night being woken early the next morning to someone puking outside our door so we checked out and found somewhere else to stay. We actually found another hostel for the same price but in comparison it was like staying in a 5* set-up. There is no excuse for the state of the building and rooms.

It was the easiest place to get to and from, being right across the road from Central Station and a ten minute walk to Fortitude Valley. The hostel wasn't modern and the elevator was something out of Bogart Movie...but that all added to the charm of the place. The staff were really awesome, Laura on the travel desk made some great recomendations and had her finger on the pulse for bookings and what to do. The ZiBar breakfast was amazing for $7 and I have to say, one of the best nights out I have had in the Down Underbar. Its great fun for anyone travelling and really can't be missed.

I stayed at Base for one night as a stop-over. It was my first hostel experience in Australia and I've since had plenty. I now know that this hostel isn't that great. The elevator didn't work and it hadn't worked for some time. The stairs circle around the elevator shaft and it makes it difficult to carry your bags up and down with other people traversing the opposite direction. The room was pretty dirty and so were the sheets. I thought there were bugs in the sheets but then I just said 'ah who cares' and closed my eyes and went to sleep. I guess most hostels are a mess but I don't think this one had been cleaned any time soon. All of that is cool and easy to deal with, but the bathrooms were what really seemed to bring my rating of this branch of Base down to a 'poor' rating. The bathrooms literally down one hall then another hall down some stairs and up some stairs and down three more halls. So basically if your going for a shower and have a towel only than your putting on a show. Oh and if you have to go to the toilet in the middle of the night it isn't very convenient. No shower curtains in the shower room either (1 of 3 showers had curtains). The staff seemed average and nothing special. There was a nice little common room with internet and the kitchen seemed a little cramped. There is a wrap around balcony that is cool and the location is okay but I would check out the other Base - Embassy if I were to go back and stay with Base in Brisbane. It's a hostel and its not that bad really but just ask for a room near the toilets/shower. Oh and they have free lockers which was a plus because they were large lockers.
