I paid $335 a night for a 2 night stay - booked on a named basis, not via one of the antonymous sites as I quite often do........

The hotel is very convenient to the train station and it's nice to be able to jump on a train at the airport and then just walk to the lobby.

The comes the bad stuff. Breakfast is $49 - yikes! Internet $29 for 24 hours (buy a SIM from the V company and you get 4 megs of data you can use on a personal hotspot basis - huge saving!).

The straw that broke this particular camel's back was the stinginess of the free lobby wifi. Yo get kind of used to sitting in the lobby like a cheapskate to take advantage of free wifi, but at the Sofitel, it's limited to 50MB. I went down there to try to download my daily newspaper which I guess is about 250MB and didn't get too far.

Well done Sofitel on saving on giving me that 200MBs. You'll never get another room night from me.

Final note. For those of you who like a decent workout, the gym is poor. One chest press and one pull down machine + dumbbells. I know you can get a decent workout with dumbbells with a bit of creativity, but no further machines and no barbells = another reason to find a better hotel in Brisbane next time.

Dear JohnDougall

Thank you for your feedback following your recent stay with us.

Whilst it was pleasing to read that you enjoyed the hotel’s central location it was disappointing to read there were other parts of your stay that did not meet your expectations and I shall discuss the points you raised with my team.

Thank you again for your review.

Yours Sincerely

The food and service for my special gym meals were great. However, having requested a City View room when booking over the net, I was given a back corner room. This was immediately underneath the gym on the floor above. People in the gym consistently dropped heavy weights on the floor from 5 to 6pm, which I ignored. However, the same thing happened at 7am the next morning. I requested to be move rooms. The hotel obliged, but again gave me a backroom at the hotel on the next level down. I complained on two occasions, and was informed that all rooms on the original level I had were "City View Rooms" even though the backrooms overlooked the mountains. On this basis, all rooms in the Sofitel Brisbane are "City View Rooms", so why advertise the fact? Don't book over the net in future as you will be given sub-standard rooms. I shall not be returning even though I've stayed there often.

Dear Neal G

I appreciate you taking the time to write a review following your recent stay with us. Whilst I was pleased to read that we catered for your special dietary requirements; I was disappointed to read of your experience with your room allocation and the subsequent room move. I have addressed the comments you raised with the ambassadors involved. It appears that there was a misunderstanding on our behalf regarding your room preference and I apologize for the inconvenience caused.

Thank you for your review.

Yours Sincerely

The Sofitel was a very pleasant place to stay.......a 10 minute walk to the heart of Queensland and a 20 minute walk across the bridge to the museums, beach, etc. We loved our stay there....the service was excellent from bellhop to concierge to reception to room service, and the rooms were fine, pool area nice. Only complaint was that the breakfast was pricy but my understanding is that that was due to the Christmas season, and there were lots of small and large eateries close by.

Room Tip: Ask for a Queensland view
