For my husband's birthday I decided to shout him a city-break and chose a night at the Stamford Plaza Brisbane. One of the big drawcards was that we had a dinner reservation at Fix Restaurant (amazing) at the Port Office Hotel and the Stamford was right across the road, so it was convenient. But I had also heard that the buffet breakfast was the best in Brisbane so that was the deciding factor.
We live in Brisbane so it was a bit of a treat to head into the city on a Friday after work - the Stamford offer some amazing deals for weekend breaks and we took advantage of the Friday night room special that included the buffet breakfast, free valet parking and a bottle of sparkling wine.
From our arrival mid afternoon on a dark, damp and rainy Brisbane day we were looked after in wonderful style. We were welcomed efficiently and our bags whisked away and the car taken care of. Check in was flawless and quick and soon we were ensconsed in our beautiful 11th floor room with views of the river and the Kangaroo Point cliffs. All rooms have river views but a higher floor is nicer and you also have the choise of facing the Storey Bridge or the cliffs - I think either view is lovely, especially as the sky darkened and the city lights started sparkling.
The room was lovely - very plush and comfortable, lots of lovely soft lighting in the form of lamps and it had a real old world charm in my opinion. We turned the comfortable leather armchairs to the window and settled in to soak up the view of the passing river traffic whilst sipping our sparkling wine. What a wonderful way to start the weekend.
We didn't dine in the hotel for dinner as I had reservations across the road, but it was lovely to come back to our room after dinner and drinks and fall into the most comfortable bed. I have to say the size of the room is quite large for an older hotel and the bathroom was enormous with a lovely big tub to have a soak in.
The buffet breakfast the next morning was just as good as I had heard with a huge selection of both hot and cold dishes, pastries and fruits. There is a dedicated omlette station if that takes your fancy and a great selection of breads for toasting etc. The scrambled eggs were to die for - how do hotels make such good scrambled eggs I wonder? Check out was a reasonable 11am, so we had a leisurely breakfast before heading off.
It was a wonderful start to the weekend and I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a bit of a treat - it's not the cheapest around, but is certainly worth the money and the location is fantastic. Right on the river, a short 5 minute walk to Eagle Street Pier and the Riverside Centre (lots of fantastic restaurans and bars), a quick 10 minutes up to the Queen Street Mall, and right next door to the Botanical Gardens.
