Stayed here for 2 nights in August. We had a twin room ensuite and it was massive and spotlessly clean. Room also had a flat screen TV. I really couldn't fault the room and the in house travel agent could not have been more helpful. The bar seemed lively and noisy every night but you couldn't hear the noise from our room which was great.

This hostel is not as good as the previous reviews say. I stayed in a large bedroom the 1st night, 12 beds, a small bathroom (long queue in the morning for a shower), not very clean, quite noisy, and the knob of the door broken (we had to sleep with the door open because of that). The kitchen is also too small. But the rest of the facilities are ok, TV room is comfy and new, the hostel seems to be safe, and staff is friendly.

stayed at tinbillys for 3 nights in feb- we had a lovely clean room with sky TV and it was very quite and we felt very safe! the bar downstairs is trendy but not too in your face! our only regret is that we wasted 2 nights at the palace hostel first!

The best hostel in Australia nevermind Brisbane.
Well priced, funky designs, comfy beds (so important when you had slept on a bus and a boat for the last 5 nights as I had). The bar downstairs is a good place to start a night out and the guys selling trips and excursions really know their stuff.
This place sells itself as a Youth Hostel which in many ways it is but the single and double rooms give the air of a hotel. The safe in the rooms is a real bonus.
The only downside to it (if you can call it that) are the speakers in each room to announce the latest offers they have on downstairs. The staff don't warn you about them so when you are in the shower and you hear voices in your room don't worry you aren't being burgled just advised on the latest 241 offers in the bar. :-)

I chose to stay in Tinbilly's, not wishing to return to the Brisbane YHA (as it is run down, and currently being refurbished around you). I was a bit nervous about the noise level, because there is a very loud bar at street level. However, once in my room (on the second floor), I could barely hear any noise from the bar - even when it was at its loudest later at night. I would probably avoid staying on the first floor above the bar, as even with the soundproofing I think they must have, you'd probably still hear the noise. Plus, the kitchen and TV room are on this floor, so there's a fair bit of coming and going.

The hostel is only a couple of minutes from the transit centre, and convenient for the centre of town. I felt comfortable walking around there at night.

The room was a clean, ensuite 4 share with bunks. The bunks were solid, non wobbly, and the mattresses felt new and firm. There were no backpack lockers, but for $1 a day you could hire little electronic safes in the room for valuables. The bathroom was clean. The room was airconditioned.

You pay a $20 key card deposit for the room (which also works the lights and airconditioning - this is a bit of a pain, because if someone wants to leave the room and take their key card with them, the person remaining in the room has to then put their card into the slot to keep the lights and aircon working).

The kitchen was very cramped, and a bit messy, but there was very reasonably priced food in the bar downstairs. I'd advise eating quite early, because once the DJ starts, you can't hear yourself think. Don't be nervous about going in there to eat if you are by yourself, there are others doing the same thing.

There is a Global gossip internet cafe attached to the hostel, and you get your card for this from reception.

The only down side, was that I had to pay $5 to store my backpack for the day until I catch my flight. This seems a bit steep, when I think they just put it in their office.

This was probably the best hostel I stayed in on my east coast travels. Was a bit concerned by the very lively bar underneath but once inside the hostel I wasn't aware of it at all. In fact the bar serves up really great cheap food - esp breakfast.
The 4 bed dorm was spotless and very modern with an en suite bathroom which was equally v clean. Considering how much coming and going there was, it was also pretty quiet.
The staff were all v friendly and helpful and other facilities - kitchen, tv room and internet -were all excellent.
Really great location for city centre and right next to Roma St transit centre.
