“Could be better”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 November 2013

Great location in hip and trendy New Farm, but the hostel itself could be better.
Characterful rambling old building, with the downside being a very stuffy room and high noise levels from both outside and corridor. Manned reception hours seem limited and although bedroom was clean & tidy, wash room area was very cramped and messy. Pleasant balcony area to the rear, but the above ground pool below didn’t look too inviting, even on a steamy Brisbane day. Overall, still represents good value due to proximity to CBD and bonus of free wi-fi, plus couple of bus routes stops very close by. Chouquette Patisserie over the road is awesomely Francais and it’s worth taking stroll down the hill to Bitter Suite on Welsby Street if you fancy a quality meal matched with some decent craft beer.

I stayed one night in a single room. The place is basically a backpackers in a Queenslander so you can't have high expectations, but the room was adequate. It was spacious enough and had a single bed, desk, fan, closet, fridge, TV and tea and coffee facilities. I didn't need the leftover take-out pizza from the last guest still in the fridge, but this wasn't a big deal - it's not the Ritz Carlton. And you get a fresh towel and a bar of hotel soap (the kind the doesn't foam). The bathroom was across the hall and was the sort of very basic facility you get in a fairly old house. The walls are thin, but the guests seemed quite considerate.

Downstairs there is a kitchen and pool and some dormitory accommodation which looked much less appealing than the accommodation upstairs.

The location is great - it is a stone's throw to Brunswick St with bars and cafes, a short walk to Merthyr Village with a supermarket, and the city is easily accessible (I walked quite comfortably).

If you just need a bed, I'd stay again. For the price it's very acceptable accommodation.

Room Tip: Upstairs seems preferable.

This is pretty much a "no frills" situation, however it is comfortable and very clean. Yes, there are creaks in the old place, but it has character in spades. I sleep light, so previous reviews encouraged me to bring earplugs. Worked at treat. The house has been well maintained and is an inviting space to return to at the end of the day. But there is plenty of room to lounge around if that is what you want. Easy access to ferry and restaurants, shops, New Farm park. Big kitchen if you want to cook. Yes, I would return.

I really enjoyed my 2 nights stay here. Nice cosy and spotlessly clean, good facilities, free wifi, good location within walking distance to some nice cafes for brunch and friendly staff. This is literally home away from home and I would highly recommend this lovely guesthouse for travellers who prefer a homely feel:)

Stayed for 2 nights in a room with ensuite bathroom on a weekend.
Not too expensive at $120 a night.
Thin walls, as everyone else says -- not a problem if you are a deep sleeper.
Located in pleasant residential area, walking distance close to several restaurants and Coles supermarket.
Airport bus can drop you at the door.
Arrived after business hours, so my name and room number was posted outside front door; phoned from my mobile phone and was given the door code to get in; room key was in the door.
Building, room, bathroom not fancy but quite adequate. Room attempts to be quaint with antique-like furniture.
Maria the manager/receptionist seemed helpful enough.
Free wireless internet -- a rarity in Australian hotels!

Overall I had a pleasant stay. I'd stay there again if I needed to be in New Farm, but I wouldn't make a special effort to stay there if I needed to be anywhere else in Brisbane.

Upon arriving at Bowen Terrace, you find a traditional Queenslander property. The staff are friendly and helpful however, once you have been taken to your accommodation be prepared for disappointment. The room is basic with very little fittings and shelves with which to unpack. Due to the thin walls and creaky floor boards the place is also very noisy, excavations starting at 7am next door did not help achieve a restful sleep. Upon waking we found no hot water to have a shower.

The accommodation is essentially a hostel, although the owners would prefer it to be called a guest house. For the amount we paid to stay in one of their ensuite rooms we could have stayed in the Novotel or Ibis in the CBD, and now feel decidely ripped off, this being one of the more expensive places we stayed in during our three week holiday. I Would not recommend this place to anyone except if they were backpacking and then it would be too expensive for their budget.

Hi Vixen
Thankyou for taking the time to write a review, we are glad that you found the staff and location of Bowen Terrace good, its disappointing to hear that you were not satisfied with your room, we did a survey last year before we renovated each room and asked people what we should put in the rooms, the general consensus was less is more, people wanted more room rather than clutter, I understand that everyone is different.
We are definitely a guest house catering from the flashpacker to the guests wanting their own room and bathroom with everything in-between, our prices are set accordingly to room, the cliental at Bowen Terrace is not a hostel cliental and that is not what we are after, we are a nice quiet friendly place to stay, there are plenty of cheaper accommodation around if you want to party.
I am surprised about your comment on the water as we have continuous hot water, depending on your room it can take a few minutes to reach you.
Once again thankyou for taking the time to write a comment.

Stayed 3 nights when I arrived in Brisbane, great place, friendly staff, reasonable price and very clean! Quiet area, 20-25 minutes walk from downtown. I recommend!!
Walls are pretty thin though, so it could be a little bit noisy if you don't have earplugs

So glad you enjoyed your time here, Julien. The thin walls are a typical characteristic of a Queenslander, so you're quite right, if you're a light sleeper ear plugs aren't a bad idea :) All part of the charm. Best wishes.
