“Adequate Accommodation”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

* The accommodation was in a good location - close to cafés, city, parks and shopping.
* Staff that I spoke to were friendly.
* Accommodation was very clean.
* Was concerned about security in the evenings as the locking of the front door relies on guests ensuring the door is unlatched and locked.
* Didn't like that the laundry bags for bed linen and towels sat along the passage way for a couple of days.

Would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: Would try and get a room towards the back of the building.

What do you call a place that has no staff on attendance after 18h00, rowdy kids coming in at midnight and people waking you up at 6am in the communal showers next door? You are right: a hostel. And how do you call a place that presents this kind of features, but that charges hotel rates? You are right: a rip off.

Having stupidly believed the self-hyped blurb on the Bowen Terrace website (“old Queensland charm”, bla bla bla), I booked myself into the supposedly high end room of the BT (AUD 104, no breakfast). When I arrived, at 17h45, the place was open, but empty. OK, I entered the ghost hotel, followed the instructions on the A4 sheet pinned up on the wall and made it into my room, where I was welcomed by a nice smell of chlorine. The room was large, but bare-bone, with a depressing, prison-like crude light. In spite of the scare mongering instructions on the ubiquitous A4 sheets telling you to lock up every time you go out, get in, go to the toilet, etc. I actually realised that one of my windows just did not close. So much for high security. Then I explored the hotel, all the way to the basement where a few sad looking guests were watching TV in a creepy communal room, midway between “Cuckoo’s nest” and a nursing home.

My room obviously never enjoys a ray of sunlight and, even though this early “winter” was quite mild, it got really chilly in the night, but I only had a thin blanket to fight off the cold. Of course no heating in sight (must be a real issue in the heart of winter), and the following morning I boarded my flight with a cold. In spite of this internal facing location (about 1 metre to the next house’s window), the room was quite noisy, and the street traffic was present and disturbing all night long.

Well, all these flaws could have been overcome by some nice personal attention. First, there has to be one (remember the post-18h rule). And when there is a human being in sight, it is not such a relief after all: since there is no breakfast, I went out to get one, came back at 9h45, was reminded that check out was 10am (in case I had missed the 25 A4 sheets stressing this fact in the room and in the corridors). Then, at 10.01am: knock, knock, there was the reception lady very subtly standing at my door with fresh sheets. These people at Bowen Terrace really know how to make you feel welcome.

The only positive feature of my stay was the neighborhood. Granted, New Farm is not the super trendy area and the gastronomic heaven hyped by the guide books, but it is reasonably lively and hip by provincial new world standards. In any case, it makes a much needed escape from this gloomy hotel.

We stayed here while travelling the East Coast in December, the rooms were immaculate and the kitchen and shower rooms were always clean and tidy.

The front desk was really helpful with lots of tips on where to stay. We pretty much walked everywhere and recommend catching the free fastcat to Southbank. I recommend the little bakery/coffee shop just a few steps away.

The one down side was the pool though, it was quite small and not very clean. I didn't notice anyone use it while we stayed there.

However, if we ever come back to Brisbane we will definitely stay here!

Stayed one night to visit children in New Farm, location good, walked to the river enjoyed coffee at the Powerhouse & World photo exhibition. Bowen Terrace is lovely Queensland house, happy with Queen ensuite, comfortable night sleep. The only thing not so good was the coffee cups, 1 large 1 small & not so clean to enjoy a cuppa, couldn't find any others in the kitchen...... easy to remedy when cleaning the bedroom for future guests.

What a great place friendly quite and clean not to mention great price! So close to everything no need to worry. If you are there on a Thursday Trivia night recommended. It was a good experience and you can even cook your own meals I liked the fact that the place was so close.

I have stayed here three times and have recommended to friends and family who have also enjoyed the quaint queenslander style accom. We always stay in rooms with private ensuite. Situated in New Farm- plenty of restos around and 10 min walk to the city.

I have never been to Australia before and had not stayed in a hostel in nearly a decade. I was pleasantly surprised by how great Bowen Terrace was. It was not all teenagers getting drunk every night and loud parties, so if that's what you're looking for, then this is not the place for you. Instead it's in a quiet neighborhood in a beautiful part of town, surrounded by great bars and restaurants. I see why I met so many people there who'd been coming back for years!

Maria was amazing and made me feel incredibly welcome to her place, as well as show me all the great things to do and see nearby.

The walls were very thin and you can hear everything your neighbor is doing, but at least they were very respectful.

Very convenient to get to the ferry, city bikes, bus, and only a 10 min walk to the CBD. It's a prefect central location to get to all the sights. Highly recommend!
