i booked onto reef encounter for three days. i ended up staying six! what a fantastic experience. the weather couldn't have been any better. i am a certified diver and the diving was awesome. amazing reefs. all sorts of aquatic life. 28 degree water! a clear night sky full of stars to gaze upon in the evening after having an exhilarating night dive followed by fresh dessert.
the accommodations were excellent. the food wonderful. great crew.

We were a 2 couple, 4 person client for Reef Encounter (friends travelling together) and arranged for a "top deck" room overnight package each couple, staying out on the reef overnight. The rooms were spaceous given the restrictive nature of the size of the ship, well appointed, both located at the very front of the boat with views over the reef from both front and side large windows. We had a personal host allocated to us who became affectionately known as "our slave" due to his commitment to provide us with every possible desire and ensure we did not want for anything nor have to do anything. We were treated like royalty from the first step on the transit vessel out to the reef, throughout the day / night and then until we put foot on dry land again the next day. The highlight (other than night scuba diving !) was a private dinner for 4 on the top deck overlooking the sunset with both food and service of a quality you would expect from a city first class restaurant, quite unexpected and surpising to have experienced such exceptional quality out on the reef. Full credit to "our slave" (Tim) who arranged the whole thing and a very special mention of the chef (who I believe was Ziggy) - both making this an experience we will never forget.

The staff ("CREW") on board the reef encounter were all friendly and helpful, always eager to ensure you maximised the activities available and had an experience you'll never forget. Laura (diving instructor) was instrumental in ensuring we took full advantage of what was available including the night dive - with sharks ! Unbelievable experience.

For memory the whole lot was about $695 per couple (diving cost extra). If you want to do it in style and feel/be treated like you're someone really special - this is definitely the way to go. Would recommend a top deck personal host overnight stay to anyone - just fantastic.

My first time spending a night at sea, and if there is a next time, I would stay with Reef Encounter for sure. The rooms are cozy and well-equipped. The crew are very friendly and professional. My friends and I snorkeled like 6 or 7 times in our 2-day-1-night trip, and did one introductory diving. I found that there are others that stay with them for like four or five days on the sea. All the people I met on the boat seemed to be enjoying themselves.

A primary reason for our trip down under was to dive the GBR. The Reef Encounter is a liveaboard that cruises the reef off Cairns. A day-boat shuttles passengers from and to Cairns. On board, the accommodations and meals are very good. You spend most of the time diving or snorkeling various sites and eating or relaxing between dives. There are five day dives and one night dive at several sites on two or three reefs each day.

We spent 3 days and 2 nights and had a great time (albeit exhausting, because we did not skip a dive). Each dive session is limited to about 40 minutes, but with 6 dives a day, you see a lot of reef. The crew and staff are friendly, fun, helpful and do a good job. When enjoyed their company throughout the trip. The meals were very good and filling.

The reefs we visited were colorful, in good shape, and had a lot of life, including reef sharks, big cod, octopus, and tropical fish. This is an excellent to visit the reef if diving or snorkeling are your thing. We will certainly use Reef Explorer again when we return to Australia.

Fantastic stay!!
We where initially only booked for one night, but decided to extend our stay and take our open water scuba license on board. This was largely due to the professionalism of the dive instructor and crew, which made us feel really safe in, around and under water. Very friendly, with a good sense of humor and they all knew your name, making you fell right at home. The food was excellent (much better than most of the restaurants in Cairns in fact). The reef was amazing, beautiful corals, friendly turtles, beautiful clown fish and “Petey” the Moon wrasse was only some of the highlights from this awesome trip. A “close” encounter with a Tiger Shark while snorkeling made it a truly unforgettable vacation.
I will definetly come back one time. Bloody brilliant!!
