Best Western Plus Cairns Central Apartments
Ranked #40 of 82 Speciality Lodging in Cairns
Reviewed 8 December 2011

My fiance and I stayed for 1 week during December while moving house. The property is really well located, right across the road from Cairns Central shopping centre with a Coles, cinema, heaps of shops etc, and only a few blocks away from the Esplanade with lots of resturaunts and bars. We didn't have any problems with any of the check in staff - all were friendly when we checked in and each time we came in and out. We had a 1 bedroom apartment, which was really spacious and well equipped (full kitchen and laundry, 2 balconies with fans, spacious lounge area). The room was only serviced once in our week but we were aware that was going to happen. The apartment was modern and clean.

The only two things I'll gripe about was the showerhead (absolutely hopeless - sprayed every which way but on you!), and the couch in the living room was VERY uncomfortable - great looking new leather couch but just hard and too small to really get settled onto when watching a movie, and you can forget about your partner fitting in there as well!

I'll also say that there is no air conditioning in the bedroom - it didn't bother us, even in the wet season, we just left the bedroom door open during the evenings to cool down from the air con in the living room and then left the fan on all night to keep the air moving, but if you really suffer from the heat this might be an issue.

Overall it was a great stay and I'd stay there again, especially as the price is really reasonable

I only had a very whirlwind stay here, but it was nice! Beautiful rooms. We faced the Coles complex but I didn't find there were any noise problems, and we got a beautiful sunset.

As check-in was after hours the room key and swipe cards were left in the outside safe which was fine because an email is sent before you arrive explaining all of this but it would be better to have some service past 6pm.! Overall this was just one of my concerns about the "service"... if you wanted to know anything i.e. like the fact that rooms are not serviced daily, where the pool is, how to get internet, then you have to read about it in the information folder in your room (that's if there is a folder in your room!). Also, the manager was frightfully unfriendly - we were almost too scared to speak to her and the girl on the desk was timid and vague. Given this city is a key tourist destination why on earth aren't they remotely happy? In four days I don't think we saw either of them smile and look like they wanted to be where they were (there was also an unfriendly older man walking about the place - I can only guess that he was the husband of the manager but he also couldn't raise a smile or even a "hello")..

First impression of the studio apartments is that you feel like you're walking into a big cupboard and you're literally greeted by a large cupboard when you open the door. After a while you feel like you're a caged animal as the box shaped balcony is enclosed with aluminium blinds and it is hard to imagine you're at a holiday destination and not a prison! These rooms are on the side of the buildings so don't expect any water views so we changed rooms.

The one bedroom apartments are much better and are worth the extra $$$. They have full kitchens which are great given the proximity of the supermarkets. As for the internet - there is only one option...24hrs and it only costs $11 BUT you have to get a cable from reception (between 7 and 6) in order to access it AND go to reception every day for a new password and new allocation - you cannot sign up for an hour and you cannot pay for or receive access for more than one day at a time... very odd.

The location is good as it is an easy walk to the esplanade and many restaurants. The downside is the noise and the lack of service. I suggest packing earplugs because if the street noise doesn't wake you the trains will. Despite my comments I did like staying here but would love to see the staff take some happy pills!

Room Tip: Pay the extra and get a 1 bedroom facing the water

The staff were excellent, friendly helpful however there wasn't a Daily servicing of the room, towels were wet and dirty especially considering I stay in excess of 5 nights, the rubbish bin overflowing with empty bottles etc, the overhead bed fan noisier than a jet taking off, unuseable! and if facing Central Shopping Plaza the high pitched noise from COLES roof generator caused insomnia. The generator noise was 24/7. The room was clean and bed comfortable. As the previous reviewer was already said " They advertise cable TV, BUT not available and when asked they blame AUSTAR for the installation, so why advertise a product that isn't availble?

Dear GJMac, I am very sorry you did not enjoy your stay, We do have Austar in each room and is only a matter switching the TV from DTV to ATV via the source button on the remote. We do advertise that we are fully self contained apartments and a service is carried out if requested by the guest for a small fee. This way we can keep accommdation cost down. As for the noise from Coles and the fan if you had approched our reception staff we may have been able to move you to another room.

On their website it says Cable TV, apart from the local and digital channels there wasn't any cable/AUSTAR TV reception available in the Hotel studio Apartment.. And the rooms ain't serviced daily, so the same towels and use over and over again, rubbish bins ain't emptied neither. And for anyone with a view of central cairns railway station be prepared for Traffic noise.

We arrived in Cairns after the office had closed as arranged. The keys were located as per instrucions and we made our way up to our rooms. They were gorgeous, so clean and fresh, given how hot and stuffy it was! Located across the road from Cairns Central and the Kuranda Rail station. We were easily able to stock our fridge and feed ourselves, with the many choices around.
We left the next morning before the reception opened, so follwed our instructions. Our credit card was charged and all went seamlessly.
