“Everything you want from a hostel!”
Reviewed 12 August 2013

Two of us stayed here for around a month from June-July and we were so sad to leave! The hostel really became like home and felt like a family. Everyone is so welcoming and understands the perfect balance of partying and down time. The staff were very friendly and helpful, in particular the english girl who was working the morning shift on reception while we were there.

Admittedly my (very fussy) friend wasn't originally a fan of the kitchen when we first arrived, but all it took was one word to the manager who actually completely renovated the entire kitchen! The only problem you'll come across now is the handful of lazy backpackers who can't be bothered to wash up after themselves, but every hostel has them unfortunately!

Free breakfast, free wifi, free meal vouchers for one of the main backpacker pubs in town, great atmosphere - what more could you ask for?!

If you're looking to stay in the ideal backpackers hostel then Reef is the one. We loved it.

Awesome people, wicked parties.. true backpackers will love this place!!!! The rooms were big enough, the garden is great, kitchen just got renovated.. only the manager isnt very nice and gets really grumpy if you bring people over, but that's okay. Showers were fine, common room looked good.. the biggest family in cairns!

I stayed in a dorm room for a few days there and nothing to say regarding the room, clean and spacious enough for the 8 of us, with shelves and fans working well. BUT the kitchen of this hostel is the worst I've ever seen, the cooking trays didn't work so my only solution was to have noodles with the cattle or have toasts. The free breakfast is a big joke, I barely saw a pack of bread in the morning and there was nothing to put on it.
However, good ambiance in the backpacker and location is quite good.

The American at reception was hungover and we had clearly disturbed her from her sleep at 2pm she was quite rude, all other staff were polite and friendly though especially the cleaners. We stayed in a double which was very dirty and backed on to the court yard of this very noisey hostel so we did not get much sleep. The kitchen is disgusting, the oven doesn't work, the taps are not attached properly and bugs are everywhere. I would not go back here, the location is good though, but then again most hostels in Cairns are in a good location.

Room Tip: Try and get a room not over the courtyard.

The room here was good (6bed female dorm), with no bunk beds, lockers, side tables and plug sockets. The kitchen and bathrooms were some of the filthiest I have seen, and there are hardly any showers in the whole hostel, so you may have to wait to use it. The reception area is basically a travel agents, and the hostel feels very unstaffed once inside and a bit of a side show to the main business of selling tours.

We spent 10 days here as a couple in May.

Firstly: the good bits. Decent sized double for $50 a night. The bed was reasonably comfy, air conditioning worked well etc. Free wifi with pretty good connection.

Staff are friendly

The location is excellent, only 5-10 minutes from everything.

It has a social vibe although we were job hunting so didn't really get to get involved unfortunately! But everyone seemed friendly enough.

Laundry facilities for $4 per wash/dry - more expensive than other places we've been but got the job done.

Bad points:

The kitchen really isn't pleasant.... Alot of the appliances are out of order e.g. the oven (?!) which really restricts what you can cook and we ended up throwing food away when we realised we couldn't cook it. Other appliances are on their last legs, beware of the toaster & kettle. Although you can see that the staff try to keep on top of things, we often found it really dirty and messy. Your asked to wash and dry your pots after use, unfortunately some people didn't which is annoying. Also even when you do duly wash your pots they do not actually provide a tea towel to dry it with.

I agree from some posts that it can get rowdy; however I personally think the noise is coming from the Wooduck hostel next door.

Overall the hostel is fine for what we needed it for, it just needs a bit of a face lift.

The ONLY thing which is good is the location cause it's right in the center.

BUT : horrible place ! It is VERY dirty, the rooms, the commun places, the showers are horrible ... And the worst : there is a TV in a common place, young drunk people watch TV very loud the WHOLE night (until 6am ...) and smoking at the same time. No respect, we went to see the staff to complain and they just dont care. Dont go to the backpapers just next door cause it's the same. Crazy people drunk in the swimming pool shouting the whole night ... DONT GO THERE. I love backpackers but this is not a backpackers it's just a messy place
