“Great fruit and prices”

My wife was in heaven buying mangoes cheaper than tomatoes. Many vendors offer 'try before your buy' so you can taste the quality of their fruit. Staying in self-catering apartment we stocked up on fruit and made some big fruit salads for dinners. mmmm!

“Just a big fruit & veg shop :(”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 January 2014

I've been away from Cairns about 15 years, all I can say is that the markets we saw on a Saturday arvo had no atmosphere. All we saw was a few stall all selling the same fruit and veg, jewelry and nick nacks. As a market that used to be filled with "local" farmers, bric-a-brac, local artists, live entertainment, locally made crafts, etc, NONE of this was there. I was even a bit ashamed that I had visited here to show my partner part of Cairns culture that wasn't there.

As for the prices, they were very average. Apart from tropical fruit that is not seen in the other states there wasn't much else.

If you're looking for markets with more variety then take a drive to the outer small towns in the area.

“Fruit and veg market.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 January 2014

You will find mostly rows of fresh fruit and vegetables. We bought passionfruit the size of the palm of my hand and red ripe lychees! They we both juicy and delicious!! The mango, paw paw and watermelon sat there enticingly and teasingly at me, but because we were staying at a hotel we had no means to cut up and eat. Did buy a fresh coconut to drink and it was wow!!

There is also artisan breads, pastries, coffee and coffee beans to buy. And a small selection of clothing and jewllery stalls.

It is mostly a fruit and veg market.

If you are a tourist like we were, buy disposable plates and a means for cutting up your fruit for back at the hotel.

“Fresh fruit and vege market shopping "Asian style"”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 January 2014

Rustys is a must to shop for fresh tropical fruit and veges while you are staying in Cairns. As a local we go every week. It is open from Friday to Sunday afternoon and it is a great experience comparing the prices of all the traders because they can vary in price. We find the best time for bargains is just after lunch on a Sunday afternoon when all the traders are reducing their prices so that they don't have to take the left over stock with them.

Although the markets are undercover it can get quite hot and busy with people - the key is to remain calm because everyone is trying to get a bargain. After we've finished our shopping experience we make our way to one of the little food vans located on the same site facing Sheridan Street. The selection of food is great ranging from US style hot dogs, Thai, Samoan food, Fillipino and Vietnamese noodle and rice dishes. Delicious. To chill out we grab a Sugar Cane juice with Lime, Mint/Ginger or a Milky Ice Tea.

This place is worth the experience and very much like an Asian type of market. It is also hard to resist buying fresh mangoes, lychees, watermelon, bananas, pineapples, coconuts, fresh herbs (ie. coriander, mint, basil, parsley) and all types and varieties of veges. Yummm!!
