For anyone considering whether or not they should sacrifice an evening on 'reef teach' before going onboard their dive trip, I'll have to say absolutely YES - especially if you are doing your first open water/liveaboard course like I did.
For 2 hours of your time, you will come out knowing about a good portion of the commonly encountered creatures on the reef, many of which you will not know existed beforehand, and which part of the coral they live in. So much material is covered that you will pretty much learn alot, no matter however many times you may have watched finding nemo.
Once i was actually diving underwater I was able to recognize creatures that I saw or were being pointed out to me by my diving instructor. Bear in mind that you can't really talk underwater (only convey hand signals), so it was priceless to have known what I was seeing and information about it beforehand, so I was able to fully understand what was going on in the moment.
