“A birding and snorkeling delight”
Reviewed 30 October 2013

Michaelmas Cay is a bird rookery. Common birds here include the Sooty Tern, Lesser and Greater Frigatebirds, Common Noddies and Brown Boobies.

The snorkelling is good too at Michaelmas Cay, but even better is Hastings Reef (and much better still is Lady Elliot Island at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef).

Several companies travel to Michaelmas Cay. Some are large. Some are small. Some are more 'bird friendly' e.g. circumnavigate the Cay so the birds can be seen from the boat when the tide is high enough (Seastar).

“what a great day”
Reviewed 26 October 2013

went with Sea Star cruises and what a great team they were whilst taking us out on the reef. had lots of fun and had the added bonus of seeing humpback whales and dolphins playing in the sea. The boat was great as held roughly 35 people and that was great as the team could explain and teach you loads.

“Awesome spot in the GBR”
Reviewed 25 October 2013

I took the Passions boat to see the Great Barrier Reef, Michaelmans Cay was the best spot I have snorkeled. So beautiful and got to see tons of fish, stingrays, carpetsharks, and fauna. The coral is beautiful!
It was a pretty calm day so no sea turtles or reef sharks, and apparently the turtles take to the Reef when it is choppy out because it's a safe place to relax, so try and find a good choppy day to go.

“Fabulous Trip”
Reviewed 16 October 2013

The Sea Star trip was recommended to us and was one of the best trips we've had to the reef. The crew were excellent. Very enthusiastic, friendly and knowledgeable. The boat was just the right size for about 35 people, with enough sitting space for all during the journey.

It was also nice to have 2 different location stops. The first at Michaelmas Cay allowed snorkelling from the beach rather than just jumping into deep water off the boat. The only drawback is that the island belongs to nesting birds - thousands of them, so be prepared for a strong pong and the occasional dive bombing! There is also no shade if you intend sitting on the small beach area available to tourists.

Hastings Reef was brilliant for coral viewing but the sea swell on the day we visited was quite intimidating for the not too confident swimmers. The crew however were very caring and the safety aspects provided were very good. The glassy trip was also one of the best we've been on with Vinnie at the helm managing to find some good spots with turtles & fishes.

Nice tropical lunch provided on the boat and a very sensible no alcohol for purchase until after all the swimming was finished.

“Simply wonderful.”
Reviewed 23 September 2013

Walk just a few steps from the beach and you snorkeling amongst the coral and marine life, from knee high water to about 2m depth. Little shelter if the wind is anything but easterly but you wont care as youll be blown away with whats on view under water.
