Owner description: The Savannahlander is a unique train journey that starts from Cairns, Australia. Using the famous Kuranda Scenic Railway it winds through he rainforest to the village of Kuranda and beyond. For the day tripper Mareeba is the best destination - with a bus connection back to Cairns via Kuranda. For those wanting a train trip through the Australian outback the train continues on to the end of the line at Forsayth. There are side visits to the Chillagoe caves, Cobbold Gorge and the Undara Lava Tubes available.

Thanks to everyone at Savannahlander for such a fantastic day. We caught the train from Cairns to Almaden with our bikes to set off on an adventure. The guys were very careful loading our bikes, gave hilarious yet very informative commentary during the trip, were very friendly & looked after the passengers very well!! The trip itself was gorgeous & we loved that it stopped at different places, such as Stoney Creek Falls, and we could get off to get good pics. The train itself was in very good condition & it was great being able to go to the very front next to the driver, again to get those good pics of the surroundings. We will be doing it again!!

Thank Lesley F

Hi there Lesley F,

Thanks for the great review - did you know that some of the staff here are super keen cyclists as well? Its not unusual for one of our drivers to take a bike and cycle from Almaden to Chillagoe ! Another great cycle is from Einasleigh to Forsayth if you are ever looking for a great ride in the outback :)

Thanks again,
The Savannahlander

We enjoyed our time on the Savannahlander. The side tours to the Chillagoe Caves, the Undurra Lava Tubes and the Cobald Gorge were excellent and the accommodation at these outback features was excellent.

Thank Ian B

My wife and I had our first taste of the Savannahlander about five years ago when we took the two day trip out of Cairns to Almaden so we thought we would do the "full monty" the next time and last August we took the six day Savannahlander and Gulflander trip. What a fabulous outback experience this was. A full day on the coach from Cairns to Normanton located near the Gulf of Carpentaria for a two night stay in the local tourist park. A very interesting museum, a walk down to the river to chat to some locals fishing off the bridge, a couple of good pubs and the feel of red dust between the toes made for an interesting stay in this outback town. The Gulflander took us on a very enjoyable half day trip thru the remote outback to Croydon where we were met and driven to our next two night stay at the Forsayth tourist park. Not much to do here but park was good and included dinner and breakfast was a treat. Next day was a trip to the Cobold Gorge with the highlight being a ride in a "tinny" up the gorge for some great photo opps including one croc sunning on the bank. Next day the Savannahlander took us to Mount Surprise. Another fantastic train ride thru the outback with a comfortable ride, entertaining train crew and wonderful sightseeing. We stayed overnight at Undara which included a tour of the lava tubes, open air dinner and a comfortable bed in a converted rail carriage. Next day we re-boarded the Savannahlander for our full day trip back to Cairns. This was a brilliant trip which provided some amazing sights, the chance to talk to some of the people who live out in the bush and the fun of two train trips. Take the time to get out of the big smoke and enjoy the big outback experience.

Thank David S

Quite simply, beautiful and unique. The trip on the train itself was worth going for, but the scenery, accomodations, side trips, and driver commentary were great also.

Highly recommended for train enthusiasts, and/or for anyone wanting to see and experience the real Australia without the crowds. Going to places you cant get to any other way, meeting real Aussies, and enjoying some of the best outdoors I've ever witnessed.

Last month (June 2014) we travelled on the Savannahlander with visiting friends. We set off from Cairns early morning travelled through to Einasleigh and came back two days later. The trip was memorable, the scenery fantastic, and Hamish and Anthony were great crew - full of information on the history and the local sights. We loved our night at the Almaden Hotel. True bush food which we shared with the railway gang; good clean accommodation and a real touch of the outback. The Bullock Creek Cafe enroute was such fun. As locals we would throughly recommend this to visitors as a highlight of their holiday to the far north.
