Owner description: The Savannahlander is a unique train journey that starts from Cairns, Australia. Using the famous Kuranda Scenic Railway it winds through he rainforest to the village of Kuranda and beyond. For the day tripper Mareeba is the best destination - with a bus connection back to Cairns via Kuranda. For those wanting a train trip through the Australian outback the train continues on to the end of the line at Forsayth. There are side visits to the Chillagoe caves, Cobbold Gorge and the Undara Lava Tubes available.

“Everyone should do this trip.”

We have just returned from the most wonderful trip - A four day 'outback odyssey' on the Savannahlander from Cairns to Cobbold Gorge, the Lava Tubes and Chillagoe where we stayed on each of the three nights but the highlight of the trip were our drivers, commentators and all round entertainers Leigh and Anthony. They are the consummate travel professionals who kept us laughing and interested the whole way. They created a relaxed atmosphere, were discrete in the way they rounded us up (I never felt organized) and didn't worry too much about the time table yet we arrived on time at every destination. I was puzzled that there were only 11 of us who set out from Cairns on day one but soon realized that this was because we picked up an assortment of passengers along the way. At our first morning tea stop the local kindergarten came on board for a short ride. What a delight. We also had other passengers who came along for parts of the journey and by the time we returned to Cairns we were almost full. Along the way if things of interest came up Leigh or Anthony would just stop the train for a photo and on the way back we were 'held up' by a 10 year old Ned Kelly one of a trackside family of 8 children who performed for passengers for their holiday money. Other highlights were the morning tea in the creek bed and the prearranged lunches and morning teas provided by locals who all came to greet us with their own special brand of hospitality. Cant stop raving about this trip. It is a must do.

“4 Day Tour - Cairns to Cobbold Gorge & return on Savannahlander Train”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 August 2014

Really the ultimate Outback Adventure. Our drivers, Will & Lee, thankyou for giving us such a wonderful time. Our journey took us to the Lime Caves at Chilligoe, Lava Tubes near Mt Surprise and Cobbold Gorge. Accommodation and meals in outback towns good. Cobbold Gorge Resort like an 'Oasis' -A1. highly recommend and would have liked an extra day there. The cruise of the gorge Spectacular

“our train fix”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 August 2014

We did the trip without the off train tours. The drivers were a delight, we loved the whole trip. My husband and I had done the trip 6 years ago with the off train tours, but this time we did it with a friend without the off train trips. Changes have been made as far as some stops go but still the best value for money and entertainment.

“A great experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 August 2014

Our trip from Cairns to Forsayth and return over 5 days was a real explorer experience with great interaction between passengers and crew. The accommodation and side trips gave a good idea of what went on in the late 1800s. To have a train stop to examine things of interest along the way, to boil the billy ,have scenery explained, Feed wildlife that came to meet the train and to listen to sounds of the bush.
One memory was of the passenger who informed the train crew that he had put his camera case down during a scenic stop and forgot to pick it up, the train was then backed some kilometers back to pick it up.

Hi there Pat O,

Thanks for the lovely review. Yes, it may surprise people how personalised we can make the train service when we are the only train on the line! Random stops and backing up to revisit something is part of the service :)

Thanks again, we hope to see you again sometime...
The Savannahlander.
