We stayed at the Holiday Inn Cairns for two nights in April 2011 before a scuba liveaboard trip. We had a King OceanView that was comfortable and had a good view of the Esplanade. The bathroom was tiny and there was no shower curtain which meant some water splashing on the floor or the other person trying to get ready at the sink. There were also no hand towels, only bath towels and wash cloths. The curtains were very nice in that they crossed each other in the middle and went all the way to the floor leaving the room nice and dark for as long as we liked. We prepaid for the breakfast buffet, which was good but nothing special. Overall it was a good location, clean, comfortable and we had no issues with customer service. We would visit again for a short stay. The city of Cairns itself does not offer much for activities and has no beach so when we returned from a scuba trip we spent several days a little further north in Port Douglas.

Stayed for 3 nights over the busy April Easter weekend in a water view room (Trinity inlet).
Check-in was efficient and so to was check-out with no billing errors.

The room was spacious with a comfortable king bed. Bathroom was what we'd regard as compact yet still functional. The shower was actual a shower over bath with a half glass screen. The room had a flat screen TV, mini bar fridge and the usual desk & chair, sitting chair and bedside tables.

The star attraction of the room was the full height floor to ceiling glass windows and balcony sliding door with views over the inlet. The narrow balcony had 2 plastic chairs and a small table - great for afternoon drinks watching the world go by.

We only ate breakfast each day at the hotel (included in the package) which had an excellent hot & cold selection as well as a coffee machine and a juicer. Service was efficient except for the last day when different staff were on (Easter Sunday) which was poor - disinterested staff, long wait time to be seated even though we were the only couple waiting for about 7 mins. The restaurant was not busy at all. Plates were also not collected as they were used (ignored by passing staff).

The property itself was across the road from the walking path and landscaped gardens running along the foreshore boardwalk & cycle track. The hotel was in a wave design and tastefully decorated for its age. The elliptical design of the building allowed for a rainforest theme gardens with the atrium of the open space with a giant pond running throughout the inner grounds housing the resident Barramundi fish feeding area.
It was not situated directly in the hustling tourist hub but was a comfortable walk to wander around and even to and from restaurants in the evening without the need of taxis.
The hotel had WifI but it was about $24 per day which in this day & age is too expensive and should be part of the room rate. We used our Optus mobile phone as a laptop modem which worked fine.

Overall a good value, clean, functional property that would be fine for holiday or business travel. We would stay again.

I am due to stay at the Holiday INN checking in on the 24th of this month.

My reservation experience was not so great at all.

When i called reservations to book, they sold me a deal that had expired in December 2010. I was also advised on the phone that breakfast was included in this deal, later to find it was not.

Upon calling the hotel directly to rectify this issue i had no resoloution unfortunatly resulting in calling head office. Something i really should not have to do.

The end result being the expired rate they confirmed with me was granted as well as teh breakfast.

Not a good start to our trip but i am willing to give them a chance.

I will post again after my stay.

We as a family were very happy with this Holiday Inn. I was hoping that it would be as described in the brochure and it was, as I am always a little skeptical. The room was a good size, it was quiet and does look like what is in the picture. My husband stays in a hotel most weeks and was happy with this one, we are a fussy family and could find no fault. The pool was a hit with our children. It is well located, a comfortable walking distance to the lagoon and boat terminal. Parking was good too as we had hired a car. We would certainly stay again at this hotel and are looking forward to our next visit in the future we had a fantastic holiday.

It was fine . . . . nothing to write home about. The number of stars seem a bit high to me. If I was hoping to holiday -at- the hotel like a resort I would be very disappointed but we used it for two days after landing in Cairns from LA and the day after the dive boat before flying into Sydney.

The staff at the front desk was the best part. Accommodating and held our luggage while we were on the dive boat. The rooms seem to have been recently redone so the inside of the rooms have a fresh feel.

I don’t know if the “business center” is the two computer terminals you pay for (two dollars for twenty minutes). I hope that wasn’t it . . . .. . .

“Would I recommend this hotel to a friend?”- If the price was right then yes sure go for it but if you are looking for a resort . . . . keep looking. If you want a place to crash it is fine I wouldn’t want to spend lots of time there. Get on the Great Barrier Reef as soon as you can, that seems as it is the best part of this town.

Another Holiday Inn and more great beds and pillows, to the extent that my partner is hunting the pillow supplier down to buy some. The room was quiet and well presented and the front desk were professional.

There were a couple of disappointments.

1. The power failed in the room during the second afternoon and whatever they did, didnt work and it failed again at 2am in the morning. So the night manager had to dig up another room for us to continue a broken night's sleep.

2. The restaurant's Friday night seafood buffet was boring and overpriced. I mean, prawns, crab and RSL club salads dont constitute a seafood buffet in the tropics. Especially at uncompetitive prices. What about some bugs? I might have paid the price if it wasnt so boring and below standard.

Room Tip: Pillows and beds!
