“Great Location, Good Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 March 2013

Stayed there recently for a couple of days, but have stayed many times before. The location is near the Esplanade and the great walking tracks, but is also near the city centre, but only about a $25 taxi fare to the airport. The room I was given had a balcony with a great view of the Esplanade and a desk separate from the Television, so you can watch television whilst doing work without cramping with laptop on bed. The hotel staff were courteous and the service was good. Airconditioning worked well in the room and the bed was comfortable. The cost was reasonable and mini bar prices were reasonable. I will definitely stay here when I next visit Cairns.

Dear Mark M,

Thank you for your feedback on Trip Advisor. It is always good to see such active members of the online community.

We are lucky to have our hotel in such a prime position, right on the main esplanade; the walking tracks are a great way of getting out and seeing the town whilst getting some exercise.

Since our renovations were completed, our desks have been quite a hit especially with our corporate travelers.

We always strive to deliver the best customer service, and I am glad that our team lived up to this expectation.

Next time you are in Cairns, we look forward to welcoming you back to The Holiday Inn.

Warm Regards,
Matt Rippin & Team

Stayed here for several days in February and loved it: great room, modern and clean, spacious room, good breakfast, nice pool, looking out over the sea/bay......wonderful watching all the birds and bats busily flying past the balcony at dusk before they settling down for the night - amazing.
Very helpful staff on the desk. In fact our experience led us to book the Holiday In in Sydney (BIG mistake....apparently they are independent of one another, as we found out in Sydney to our disappointment!).

Room Tip: Opt for a sea view, high up.

Dear Martin H,

Thank you for your feedback on Trip Advisor. It is always good to see such active members of the online community.

It was great to read that you stayed here quite frequently during February.

Our newly renovated rooms are looking great with their modern decor and spacious feel. The balconies are a fantastic way to relax and enjoy the sunset overlooking the ocean, and it’s quite a sight to see the bats busily flying over the city.

I am sad to hear that your stay at Sydney wasn’t as enjoyable, however am delighted to hear that you received such great service from our dedicated team here.

If you are ever in Far North Queensland in the future, we look forward to welcoming you back to the Holiday Inn Cairns

This hotel was nicely located and the staff was very helpful. The physical plant is a bit dated. I booked two rooms and they both smelled musty. The musty smell faded after the air condition ran for a while. The first morning, one of our rooms had no hot water. The manager offered us another room to shower in, but we did not have time to shlep to another room, for we were being picked up for a tour. We returned that evening to find an apology note and a box of chocolates in our room. We spent one morning relaxing at the pool. The pool area is nice, but the cushions on the chairs are very worn and appear grimy. You wouldn't feel comfortable sitting on them without a towel. All in all our stay was pleasant, the staff very accommodating, but the physical plant needs a bit updating.

Dear Sheaville,

Thank you for your feedback on Trip Advisor. It is always good to read reviews both good and bad, this allows us to fix the problems and continue to be a great hotel that our guests love and enjoy.

I am glad to hear that overall your stay was pleasant and that our staff were accommodating.

I have noted your comments on the air conditioners and the rooms and have forwarded this onto our engineering department to look into further. However, it may be because our air conditioners don’t run 24/7, instead they are a new eco friendly version meaning they switch on and off when a guest enters or exits the room.

Should you visit Far North Queensland in the future, we look forward to welcoming you back to The Holiday Inn Cairns

We needed a hotel early Sunday morning, having been off loaded from a plane due to illness. This hotel was a 5 minute walk from the medical centre so we rang and explained our need for a room immediately. No problems. We checked in at 7.30 am and were pleasantly surprised at how good it was. We had an ocean view room (because that's what was availailble at this early hour) with a full width balcony so the view was very pleasant. We were surprised at how inexpensive this room was. In a different place it would have cost double. The room was very spacious with a desk/table, arm chair and a comfortable king size bed. The decor is modern and the room clean. The bathrom was smallish but big enough with a shower over the bath.....with a handrail, which was very helpful as I was unwell. Good quality bathroom amenities were supplied and extras available if needed which was very helpful to us as all our luggage as at the airport.. We used the room all day until 11am the next day and found it comfortable. Flat screen TV with the usual channels, quiet AC or you could turn it off and open the balcony door for fresh air. We used room service for meals and it was quick, tasty and reasonably priced. Finally feeling better in the morning we ate breakfast in the Sirocco restaurant which was excellent. Lots of resh fruit, cereals, breads, a large variety of cooked dishes, coffee, tea and pastries. Only complaint was that without warning breakfast was packed up promptly at 10 am. We were a little surprised as usually staff will go around and warn customers that it will be packed up and to get any more food they might want. Checkout was efficient and easy. Finally, the hotel is generally smoke free with a small outdoor area specifically for smokers. Overall a good experience and a hotel we would consider for a stay under different circumstances.

Room Tip: We had an ocean view room which ws on a side street, not the main boulevard. We did get a bit of noi...

Dear judykbee,

Thank you for your feedback on Trip Advisor. It is always good to see such active members of the online community.

We understand the delays that occur with airlines and planes, and we are more than welcome to help out wherever possible.

We are lucky to be in such a prime position, only 10-15 minutes from Cairns airport and an easy 5 minute walk to the 24 hour medical centre just down the road.

Our new renovations are proving to be a hit with our guests, and the modern decor and amenities give the hotel a real fresh look.

Breakfast is delicious, and there are always an array of fruits and cooked dishes, and our juice bar has been extremely popular.

We've just had one night here and found the staff, the facilities, and cold beers to be great. The rooms were clean which is my number one priority, beds comfy, selection of pillows, the bathroom a little small and big enough for one person at a time but again clean and good products. Pay exta and get the ocean king room, it's worth it. Sunday morning they had a church group singing in one of the conference rooms, you couldn't hear it from inside the room but outside it was very pleasant and soothing, gospel is nt my preference but as we sat beside the pool, reading the paper it was a gentle background nose, I really enjoyed it. The pool has food and drink service but looks a little tired against the rest of the hotel. Beautiful gardens and ponds with giant barramundi!! Fantastic to get such a close up view of them. Would definitely return.

Dear leesinexile,

Thank you for your feedback on Trip Advisor. It is always good to see such active members of the online community.

I am glad to hear that your stay was great and that the room was comfortable and clean, and above all, the beers were cold!

I do recommend to guests that they upgrade to an ocean room, they have spectacular views of the ocean and the city lights at night are beautiful.

I will pass your comments on regarding the pool; your reviews help us to make our hotel better.
As for the barramundi, they continue to steal the show, they love their prawns, and we encourage guests to feed them, they don’t bite.

If your travels bring you to far North Queensland in the future, we look forward to welcoming you back to The Holiday Inn Cairns

Initially i wasnt keen on staying at another Holiday Inn in Cairns after i had stayed in the Holiday Inn Colonial which it was known as 18 month ago which is now the Ibis. That hotel was terrible and very outdated and run down so good luck to The Ibis on that one.

Anyhow i am glad i ended up booking the one on the Esplanade as it was fantastic, i had initally booked it for the location but i can now say the room was modern, clean and very comfortable beds. The customer service was very friendly, when we requested extra towels they were delivered immediately. We could see the ocean from our room but it wasnt an ocean view room so i am glad we decided not to upgrade. My room consisted of two double beds so with a family of four it was perfect. The only downside is that the bathroom is very small.

We had breakfast in our package and it was value for money and the food was great and the staff in the restaurant was very friendly.

The kids had a swim in the pool and they had alot of fun.

Have already told my husband that on our next trip to Cairns we wont be looking elsewhere we will go back to this one.

Loved it.

We stayed at the Cairns Holiday Inn in early February, 2013. The initial greeting by Anna, on duty that evening, was warm and she had typed up a message from friends welcoming us to Cairns. She said she was expecting us and was pleased we had reached the hotel easily. Throughout our five day stay she continued to be a bright hello as her shift changed to daytime.

The restaurant staff were very helpful and their breakfast buffet was one of the best we had experienced in our month in Australia. They were constantly attentive to the food and were constantly refreshing it.

Our room was comfortable, quiet and the air conditioning and fan kept us cool throughout the hot, humid time we were there. It was a very pleasant stay, close to the downtown area but just removed from the busy waterfront strip by one half block. It was a very pleasant stay.

Room Tip: We were located on an upper floor with a sideways view of the waterfront and facing the Servicemens...
