“Couldn't be better.....”
Reviewed 28 April 2013

We had the best time while in Cairns the thing that made it possible was the staff here Anthony and Heather you were an amazing help to us with booking our adventures for us and be so nice and friendly. I have no complaint about the accomodation except we didn't stay long enough.
Very clean and comfortable no problems with anything at all.
Thank you for your hospitality if coming back to Cairns will definately give you a call.
Lori and Leanne.

Hi Lori and Leanne; so nice to get your lovely review. I am so glad you enjoyed your stay with us so much (especially as fellow Queenslanders) and most importantly, Cairns as a destination. Glad our advice was helpful too – we spend our lives telling people where to go (literally) so it’s nice to get feedback. I will pass your kind words on to Anthony. Cheers, Heather

Showered worked amazing for the first 2 days.for the last 4 days, the shower was only warm if you did not turn the cold water tap on and the head would only trip the hot water out in a small but annoying stream to drip.this description of the water flow is very accurate.i couldnt be bothered complaining.no desire too because i would nevwr be back.the over all review i have given is based on the shower and the pathetic aircon.i didnt touch it exceot turn it on and off.it worked when it wanted.the old man at the counter on checkout, basically acted like i wasnt even there.i was giing to rake the time then to quickly explain the problems i had,but couldnt be bothered with him too.management you dont have to reply to this.....i just wanted any other pitential guest to know, therea better prices, quality and service elsewhere.........

Hello there Andrew; I’d like to encourage you (in a nice way of course) to be a little more ‘bothered’ in the future and complain if a genuine complaint is warranted. We have a full time handyman here at Discovery who would have been straight to your door to fix your water problems - please remember we clean the showers, we don’t shower in them so unless you tell us, we aren’t always aware of problems.

As to ‘the old man at the counter’, we actually don’t have any ‘old men’ working in reception, only middle-aged ones. However, our maintenance man is 67 so I guess you could call him ‘old’ (just not within his striking distance) and being ‘old’ he is very patient and not only would he have fixed your maintenance issues, he would have even spent time with you to help you with your spelling issues.

Cheers, H

The really knowledgeable and helpful staff make it a terrific place to stay. My travel agent had booked some tours, but Anthony recommended a couple more which really made my holiday. There's plenty of room, aircon, two pools, very clean and tidy. Lan's Vietnamese restaurant is yummy.... try the prawn mince in lettuce leaves. A nice casual walk to the centre of town or along the esplanade.

Thanks for both taking the time to write a review and writing such a pleasant one at that - and we didn’t even have to pay you! Our little team has been together since Discovery was refurbished and reopened 7 years ago now. Anthony is a late ‘ring-in’ having only joined us six months ago but as a local yocal he’s bought a lot of knowledge with him and we like having him around. As locals, we do have a lot of knowledge which we pool to cover most things and we love to share are info with people from all over the globe each day. We all have great tour and area knowledge with Martin and Anthony being the ones to ask when it comes to dining and the city centre itself. Myself… well unfortunately my wheelie bin gets taken out more than I do but having been a tour-guide for a huge chunk of my life, I can add a few things they can’t so we seem to gel and cover most questions asked, although I am yet to find the perfect answer for, “Can’t we just drive to the Reef?”

Compared to other places, this no-frills accommodation is in a safe area with comfortable beds, hot showers, and mini-fridge. It's walking distance (5 mins) to main Cairns downtown / esplanade tourist area.

The reception is only open 8-8, but they make efficient arrangement to check-in or out after that time. 2 small pools as well.

There is nothing particularly charming about this place, but if you're just looking for a base to explore the surrounding area, this is a cheap and adequate option.

Hello there and thanks for writing your review. I am glad you found us ‘what the doctor ordered’. Your bed must have been comfortable with a pleasant sleep in had by all - which is probably very lucky for you – as you missed either myself, Anthony or Martin dragging ourselves in to open reception at 6.30am as we do. There’s nothing particularly charming about any of us at that hour of the morning, actually, at any hour really so probably a good thing you missed that! But on a serious note, we do appreciate your review and thanks from the team.

Thanks for taking time to write a review and glad you found us helpful. Our location is fairly quiet; near to the private hospital and come 5pm weekdays - when all the hospital workers knock-off - it’s bliss (with both parking and noise levels). It’s also a benefit that we are not on the ‘main drag’ (Sheridan Street) but a quieter street (Lake Street). Glad you got some exercise in; those holiday kilojoules can creep up on you when you’re eating out, that’s for sure. At reception, we have a link direct to the taxi company (via the internet) and are always happy to call a cab for people (no charge) in the heat of the day if they wish, however we like to encourage people to walk so they can take in the delights of the Esplanade and Parklands through to Cairns Central – a bit of a circuit that takes only a short time to do. Cheers, and thanks again, Heather.

Super helpful staff and clean hotel rooms. Has everything you need if you're just using it as a base. Laundry, bus timetables, breakfast available and most importantly, air conditioners!!

The lovely staff helped me book everything, recommended some great places to eat and which tours to take.
Close enough to city centre and transport. Shuttle bus available to the airport.

Thank you for taking time to write a review. So glad we were suitable to all your needs and that you found us helpful. Martin, Anthony and myself (the reception full-timers), while not pretty to look at, really love our jobs and meeting people from all around the globe and we’ve all been doing it for a very long time. We get to talk all day (and we’re good at that) and it gives us a great sense of achievement when we recommend a trip/destination for our guests and they come back with wide smiles and exhausted, ready for a great night’s sleep – that’s what holidays are about, rain, hail or shine. Cheers, Heather

Great staff at an excellent budget hotel. Clean, well serviced, two pools. About ten minutes walk to the main town area. Makes it quiet in the evenings. Staff knowledgable and had lots of tips and recommendations of things to see and do. All we were great. Highly recommended for those on a budget.

Room Tip: Upstairs balcony room nicer.

Thanks for taking the time to write a review and bless your cotton socks, we loved having you stay with us too! So glad you found us just what the Doctor ordered. The great thing about the short walk home from the restaurants is that it helps keeps those holiday kilojoules at bay! Um maybe I should try it more often myself... Again, thanks for your review. Cheers, Heather
