“They should really remove 'Resort' from the name”
Reviewed 11 August 2008

The first thing that should be done is for the name to be changed to Discovery Motel Cairns because the name 'Resort' had me thinking things were going to be a much better than what they were we arrived. To say things were very basic would be more realistic.

First off the reception is not open 24/7, only between 7.30am and 9.30pm so beware if you are on an all-day excursion because you need to hand your room key in when you are out of the motel.

The room was extremely basic - ceramic tile floors, minimum lighting and fridge inside the wardrobe. The bathroom is like something from yesteryear - very old but the shower was really good despite the ancient fittings. There are superior rooms available which also have cable TV but we just had the basic room. The one plus though is that they were kept very clean.

Our room had a connecting door to the room on the opposite side of the building which we could open!!! Being honest people we are, we didn't enter the other room but just make sure to keep things locked up if you have an adjoining room. The soundproofing is extremely poor because we were woken at 4am by the noise from an adjacent room - which we were not amused by as you can imagine.

There are 2 swimming pools although the one beside our room was out of commission and you were being re-directed to the other pool. I didn't venture there but I hope it was bigger than the one beside us which was all of 2.5m long by 1.5m wide.

The laundry facilities were good - $2 for a 30min wash and $1 for about 20 mins in the tumble dryer although I needed to put in another dollar to get my clothes properly dry.

The saving grace for this hotel is the Italian restaurant (Rimini) attached to the hotel. The food is excellent and their lasagne is one of the finest I have ever tasted! The staff are very friendly and the food & wine great - look out for the various deals they have too like a 3-course meal for $25. You can get breakfast there too and at a reduced price for the buffet ($16 instead of $21) if you hand over the voucher you get when you check in although you can purchase items off the menu if you don't fancy the buffet.

  • Liked — The Italian restaurant next door - it really made the stay worthwhile
  • Disliked — Its very basicness - basic room, basic facilities - and not exactly living up to its name

Stayed at the Discovery on two seperate occasions. Its just basically your typical motel. Rooms were nice and clean, recently redone with modern looks, but OH MY, the bathrooms had clearly not been redone since the 60s. Quite a contrast to the rest of the room.
Check-in staff was very friendly and offered to store our luggage for free during the day after we checked out

While we didn't stay long enough to take advantage of amenities, this was a very clean place on the main road. It was a long 15 minute walk to the pier and downtown, but we were glad for the peace and quiet.

Staff was more than helpful with arranging tours out to the REEF. The room was a delight as may of the accomodations thus far had no tubs. Two swimming pools well maintained. A bit of a walk to town 10 minutes if you are a walker. Not to far to the only grocery store in the area. Very reasonable for your dollar. Stayed in several cities in Australia and would return to this one and this property. Cheaper to book with the resort itself as the standby rate is more expensive.

We spent three nights in this hotel in December. It is a nice, clean place located approximately 10-15 minutes walk from the city centre. The front desk staff is very friendly and helped us to book all of our tours. Hotel has a restaurant which provides all meals but we just walked to the city centre where you get lot of choices for food. The day before we leave I asked the front desk to help me to arrange the airport shuttle next morning. They told me to use the room telephone to do so (where local charges apply) because they have to charge me $ 5.00 if they do it. I find it bit strange as all other hotels offer this service to their guests. Overall I recommend this hotel as a good, cheap, conveniently located accommodation for the visitors to Cairns.

We stayed at the Discovery Resort Cairns for 4 nights from the 15th of Oct, 2007. First impression, very neat and clean, gave a really modern and cosy feeling. The staff were friendly when checking in and helpful with tours booking and taxi hire after hours. The service they provided were certainly on par with some of the hotels with room service everyday and toiletries. They also provide hotplate, pots, cutlery and microwave. The motel style resort is only 15 mins walk to the esplanade where you can find restaurants and shops and close to the lagoon and pier and 10 mins walk to the city center. It was a peaceful stay except on the last day when a group of people moved in and they certainly made a scene of it. We were worried they would be noisy throughout the night but that didn't happen so we were happy. Overall, definitely a well-worth stay in cairns. Cheaper alternative to hotels, if not better service.

  • Liked — Cleanliness, service
  • Disliked — Even though it's probably a safe area but will be good to have a better security lock to the room.

We stayed at the Discover Resort for 4 nights. The only problems we encountered were in check in. The manager told us that when we booked twin beds we didn''t realize that it was a double bed and a sofa bed. I wasn't happy with the sofa bed option so fortunately he booked us in a room with 2 double beds. The room is a reasonable size. The door to the bathroom/shower is a see through fixed louvre door. My partner wasn't happy with this.
Apart from that room was clean and we were happy with the daily servicing of the room.
The resort is a little distance out of town but we weren't to fussed about it as we had a car.

  • Liked — daily servicing and locaiton
  • Disliked — the see through door and check in
