The first thing that should be done is for the name to be changed to Discovery Motel Cairns because the name 'Resort' had me thinking things were going to be a much better than what they were we arrived. To say things were very basic would be more realistic.
First off the reception is not open 24/7, only between 7.30am and 9.30pm so beware if you are on an all-day excursion because you need to hand your room key in when you are out of the motel.
The room was extremely basic - ceramic tile floors, minimum lighting and fridge inside the wardrobe. The bathroom is like something from yesteryear - very old but the shower was really good despite the ancient fittings. There are superior rooms available which also have cable TV but we just had the basic room. The one plus though is that they were kept very clean.
Our room had a connecting door to the room on the opposite side of the building which we could open!!! Being honest people we are, we didn't enter the other room but just make sure to keep things locked up if you have an adjoining room. The soundproofing is extremely poor because we were woken at 4am by the noise from an adjacent room - which we were not amused by as you can imagine.
There are 2 swimming pools although the one beside our room was out of commission and you were being re-directed to the other pool. I didn't venture there but I hope it was bigger than the one beside us which was all of 2.5m long by 1.5m wide.
The laundry facilities were good - $2 for a 30min wash and $1 for about 20 mins in the tumble dryer although I needed to put in another dollar to get my clothes properly dry.
The saving grace for this hotel is the Italian restaurant (Rimini) attached to the hotel. The food is excellent and their lasagne is one of the finest I have ever tasted! The staff are very friendly and the food & wine great - look out for the various deals they have too like a 3-course meal for $25. You can get breakfast there too and at a reduced price for the buffet ($16 instead of $21) if you hand over the voucher you get when you check in although you can purchase items off the menu if you don't fancy the buffet.
