Owner description: Cairns Boat Hire have self-drive pontoon boats and tinny boats available for day and half-day rental on the Trinity Inlet in Cairns. The boats are perfect for calm-water cruising on the Cairns Inlet where fishing and sightseeing is amazing. BBQs, rods and bait can be hired upon check-in. Must be over 18 to drive. No boat license required, but a vehicle license is needed. Lots of fun in #cairns.

My husband & I and 2 children hired a pontoon for a full day. We brought our own fishing gear but hired an extra rod, extra esky, & BBQ . Pontoon was easy drive, we have some experience with boats, for a real greenhorn I think getting in& out of the marina would be quiet daunting as large tourist island boats are in and out.

We travelling many of the inlets and had some monster bites, caught some nice fish. All in all a very relaxing enjoyable day away from the rat race. The couple renting pontoons were very friendly and helpful. It really was a great day & money well spent. Fishing from 8:30am til 4:30pm. Bliss!! Ppl complaining the pontoons are slow DAH, get a boating licence if u want to hire faster. Pontoons are slow and safe.
Our pontoon was spotless, I would recommend full tarp cover as it's hot. We were well equipped, easy follow map. It's not a pleasure cruiser they are mainly used for fishing or croc viewing so expect the smell of bait!!!!! We will be back.

Hired a dinghy for half a day, boat was filthy and stunk of rotten bait. On the water, due to restricting engine idle speed by the owner our boat hardly moved under full power. We were told to be back by 5pm but due to having queue up outside the marina with all the other boats we were 10 mins late landing the boat...so was charged another $100 on top of the large amount we'd already paid. Tried explaining it was due to the queue of ferrys and commercial craft outside the marina trying to get in, and we were locals so would hire off him regularly but he wasn't interested in having our business longterm...just wanted the extra $100 for being 10mins late. We now hire fortnightly off another company that has clean equipment and goes out of their way to help make your experience enjoyable...and have spent close to $1500 with that company over 4 months. Oh and a reel we hired (Ebay special!) didn't have enough line to reach the bottom of the inlet even! Also charged us $1 per pilchard which is highway robbery! Worst boat hire mob I've used in all my trips around Oz, avoid at all costs. :(

Rented a pontoon with six others (small catamaran with shade roof capable of 10 people) to explore Trinity Inlet. Boat was poorly maintained and unclean. On-board toilet ($100 p/d extra for pontoon with this facility) was filthy, handbasin did not function due tap removed. Steering was heavy and haphazard due to lack of maintenance/lubrication of steering control cables, and engine regularly lost all power necessitating turning completely off and starting again. This occured several times before it permanently stopped due running out of fuel. Phoned operator and waited an hour for him to arrive with fuel. With engine still malfunctioning, we cut short our day and returned boat. Operator had the gall to still expect full payment which we refused, finally discounting by $95 (paying $400). Never again.

The easy to steer cruising pontoon we hired was well suited for a leisurely half day expedition up Trinity Inlet. It had plenty of space and was very stable, making it easy to stand and walk around under cover when looking (unsucessfuly) for crocodiles. Plenty of seating and good storage was available. It wasn't the cheapest hire we have made, but on par for North Queensland and as a trip to the reef was out of the question due to the wind, was a great way to get out on the water.

Nice part of the world but the boats are very overpriced for what you get. Tried some fishing with not much luck. Also advertised as being able to see crocs but we didn't see any on our trip. The owner said there was a 40% chance we would see one. I would suggest trying somewhere a bit cleaner and a bit more price friendly. That said the location is central in cairns but sightseeing in the area is not as nice as others I have been to.
