“Great location but lacking a little in amenities for the price”
Reviewed 21 September 2009

I stayed here with my wife and 6 month old daughter in July 2009. I was attending a conference in Cairns and my family came with me (before holidaying in FNQ).

The Mantra Esplanade has the best location in Cairns for young families - it's literally across the road and you are in the swimming lagoon. We found the hotel clean and well maintained but it was a little lacking in amenities for what we paid. The microwave was tiny (which was very important to us because we could only just fit our steam sterilizer in it with the glass tray removed). The TV's were CRT type (no flat screens, which are becoming standard in most better quality places now).

Our biggest disappointment was that the 1 Bedroom appartment that we booked was on the small side and not really a true 1 BR - the bedroom is separated from the living/kitchen with sliding louvre doors. This made it awkward to have a "noise proof" area where our baby could sleep (we brought our own portacot).

A small criticism is that we found it was noisy from buskers on the McDonald's corner (although they always stopped by 10pm, so this wasn't a big deal) and also at about 2am for about 10 minutes on the Thursday night (when the backpackers bar down the road closed and the revellers obviously spilled out onto the street).

We certainly can't complain about the location. We were there whilst the Cairns festival was on so had a prime viewing spot from our balcony for the parade, fireworks and even the concert.
Directly across the road is the lagoon which is just wonderful for younger kids.( free)
Just outside front door lots of coffee shops and eating places. A short 5 minute walk to the pier which has shops but on a Sat morning has an organic market place.
Only 5 minute walk to Rusty markets for all the local fruit and vegies.
Also behind the Mantra is a Woolworths which is so convenient as we had an apartment.
We found the staff wonderful. Amy in particular.
The rooms are outdated. I found it hard to believe that there were no fans and screens on the dooor as it meant you had to use airconditioning. The weather was cool enough to just use fans . The kitchen was very basic which is fine but after staying at a few other Mantras I found this one lacking( ie bowls to put salads/ vegies in , coffee plunger etc).
TV in the apartments are tiny!
My only other comment is if booking a 2 bedroom apartment , the second bedroom is not suitable for younger kids. The doors are locked( you cannot walk between the bedrooms or keep the doors open). Also the windows do not have screens, so if window is open it is a long drop down. They also have access to a balcony

Spectacular lobby, but very average room deco. Furniture quite old and dirty, TV very small. There were small ants in the apartment we stayed in.

Excellent location. Close to all shops and restaurants, plenty of eating places for reasonable prices. Short cut to Woolworth behind the hotel, very hand for self-contained apartment. We cooked breakfast most of the mornings.

Mantra offerred free on-site parking which was very handy as we self-drove most of the time.

Pool and spa at Mantra was nice, but water was a bit old for Aug weather.

This hotel has a great location with everything right outside your door but the layouts of rooms could be much better.

Hotel rooms are nothing more than the 2nd bedroom to the 2 bedroom apartments. They provide 1 main door with 2 doors inside 1 leading to the main bedroom , kitchenette, bathroom and balcony and the other being the 2nd bedroom for the children with their own bathroom and balcony.

Whilst this works in theory it is difficult for families to move from one room to the other without having to use keys as doors do not remain open. I am also sure parents would be concerned with their young children having their own balcony without being supervised.

The 2nd bedroom they class as a hotel room and whilst this worked for me and my travelling companion it would not work for everyone. You can see a review on Mantra Portsea in Port Douglas where we had the same thing but the 'hotel room' there did not provide a balcony and we did not like that...so it is hard to please everyone.

Location fantastic but I would look at floorplans before booking a Mantra again.

The location of the hotel is great...near the seafront and most things including the night markets and marina are close by.

The rooms are dated and I would say so so kind of clean...although ignore the little mites and spiders which run around everywhere (there are lots and imagine them in your clothes) ...hmmm...I am told (by the hotel) it is because of the tropical climate...right.

Then forget about their cleaning the rooms...for a four star hotel you will get no turn down, no beds made up, no towels replaced, no replacement tea coffee...basically you get the room cleaned once for every stay in excess of eight days!!! I didnt find out till after everything was booked.

So for shorter stays...you have to pay if you want it cleaned...$80 I think for two rooms.

So good location and fantastic views.

Roomy comfortable but dated rooms

No real service however and for a four star I think that is poor.

Tip...you can hire towels if you want to go to the Reef...at a dollar per towel, they are cheap enough!

We stayed for 6 nights in a 2 bedroom appt. The rooms were light, clean and generally fine except the master bedroom air-con was bit clanky. The appt was not serviced while we were there but it was pretty easy to get rid of your rubbish and pop to Woolworths to replenish supplies. The location is great...right on the Esplanade opposite the Lagoon...and the staff were helpful. Next door, there is an excellent booking agent (Bronwyn) who is very knowledgeable and got our business.

There is plenty outside the Mantra's front door...coffee shops, Asian, Indian, kebabs etc. I would recommend anyone to stay there. The negative reviews give you the wrong impression. I would definitely stay there again, especially if I need two bedrooms.

Just arrived home from our holiday and would like to warn anyone thinking of booking the Mantra Esplanade. We booked on WOTIF.

Where do I start?

The reception staff - a terrible 'welcome'. We were travelling with 3 kids and lots of luggage - the staff member was on his own, doing nothing, didn't even look up and smile as we trundled in struggling with our luggage. He didn't offer us a trolley to use. Unfriendly, unhelpful, unprofessional.

The bathrooms - both baths had pubic hair and hair in them, plus the place was grotty as...hadn't been cleaned properly. Revolting. There are not enough staff to clean the place. My son fell over in the room in the first 5 mins and his face came up covered in hair and grot!

My son cut his foot on glass in the pool area!!!

Smashed glass through the carpark.

The pool is tiny as - like for a small backyard.

The view was to a concrete balcony. The balcony itself was covered in dirt and my kids feet came back BLACK after a minute outside on it.

TV reception was faulty.

We paid 4 star prices and got a 2 star place. We were devastated. SAVE YOUR MONEY and go somewhere nice - we moved to the Novotel and it was FABULOUS!!!
