The hotel has two blocks one on the Esplanade and the other on the Lake Street side where the main entrance is. The room was in the former as we asked for ocean views and was excellent value. Each rooms as its own balcony. However as noted in the review title there is a credit card charge of 1.5% which needs to be considered and $6 charge for 5 hours internet access which I found painfully slow at times. The hotel is far enough out of the centre of Cairns to felt pleasant as the centre is somewhat brash. There is an hourly free transit bus into the centre but it is a pleasant 25 minutes walk along the Esplanade.

Room Tip: Go for ocean view rooms; not much more and well worth it.

I loved this hotel- the rooms were clean, the beds were amazingly comfortable, the staff was friendly, the breakfast was delicious, and the overall atmosphere of the hotel was very relaxed, yet classy. It's about a 15 minute walk to the center of Cairns, but it's a very beautiful walk- right along the harbor. I had several question about activities and where places were, and the staff was very helpful with explaining everything for me. The outdoor seating was great with views of the ocean, and the pool was great, too. A little bit cold, but clean. Being away from the center of the town meant a perfect night's sleep- it was very quiet.

I would certainly recommend this hotel to others. Clean, delicious, friendly... it's all here!

One of the best Mercures I've ever stayed in. The rooms are spacious and (as far as I know) all have a decent-sized balcony. Many have a view of the sea, as does the restaurant and bar, both of which open on to open-air terraces by the swimming pool. The restaurant was excellent on the one night we tried it and the bar offers a good selection of cocktails as well as a decent wine list. Everyone in our mixed family group enjoyed the breakfasts.

It's about a 20 minute walk to the centre of Cairns along the esplanade by the shoreline. There is a free hourly hotel shuttle bus but I strongly recommend the walk unless you really aren't up to it. The staff were helpful and friendly and we really enjoyed our stay. Although there's no hotel transfer to or from the airport, it's only a 10 minute cab ride which cost us about A$20. However, although the hotel will arrange a cab quickly, we found that you can wait a while for one at the airport.

Two minor drawbacks - the bar closes at what seems an unusually early hour - around 10pm. Maybe this is an Australian thing as we found similar timings in Perth, but if you want drinks later Cairns isn't short of places to get one. There's no minibar in the rooms. The other point to note is that the hotel is right under the flightpath for planes taking off from Cairns airport. They are loud enough to stop conversation for 20 seconds or so when passing overhead. The airport isn't busy, though, so this doesn't happen many times a day. Don't let it put you off what is in many ways a really great base for Cairns and the area around it.

Good value, a bit far from the city centre (important if you dont have a car), clean, but very poor restaurant food (especially dinner, high price and very poor quality & service). But breakfast buffet was very good and very good value for money.

Stay in a sea view king bed room, it's worth the extra cost to be up a few floors with a big room and balcony with glass sliding doors and windows that go the entire way across the outward facing part of the room (rather than many hotel rooms with 'views' that have relatively small window areas).

Overall quite happy but there were some small cons to go with the pros.

Harbourside Mercure is about 1.2km out of the city centre, which is walking distance. A free hotel shuttle does run to/from the city every hour 10am-10pm, but you can't totally rely on it because one night (a Thursday at 9pm) there were almost 3 times as many people as seats on the shuttle, so we taxied back to the hotel.

Staff were almost universally very friendly, except the main waiter the night we eat at the hotel, he just seemed a bit aloof or something. Great friendly and informative reception from Dickie at the main desk when we finally arrived after a delayed flight.

Breakfasts were good. Dinner I wasn't impressed with really. There didn't seem to be much of an X factor and flavours were weak. Grilled Haloumi in the mixed mezzes was very rubbery. Tasmanian Salmon itself was nice but having only one piece of bok choy and a bit of soy sauce as an accompanyment somehow made a bit of a watery effect overall. My partner's Saffron Linguine was too wet & messy, not that flavoursome, and should have come with a spoon to twirl the pasta against.

Last small negative is the king bed was two singles attached, as is often the case in hotels, however you really could notice the 'seam' and it was not possible to cuddle up together in the middle of the bed and sleep. We had to stay on our separate sides which might be fine for some folk but we like to be fairly close.

Nevertheless overall would rate the hotel at least 3.5 hence giving it 4. Would stay again but probably wouldn't eat dinner at the restaurant.
