this was my 3rd visit to the harbourside hotel stayed 5th august ,check in was quick and easy with friendly check in staff ,I was upgraded to an ocean view room ,the view was spectacular ,the room itself was large and clean with a very comfortable bed , the bathroom was clean with super soft towels ,the room had a lovely balcony overlooking the coral sea ,breakfast is served in the restaurant which serves a large variety of breakfast goodies , room service is also available , walking into the centre of cairns takes about 25 minutes but they offer a free shuttle bus if you don't feel like walking ,the hotel is currently constructing a new pool so some rooms will get a bit of noise from the construction site but the workers normally down tools around 4.00 so you are assured of a good night sleep ,if you want a swim they will drive you to one of their associated hotels and pick you up again ,the mercure is one of the better hotels in cairns and offers much better value and quality of service than other hotels along the esplanade

Stayed two nights for business and unfortunately the weather was a bit too cool for me - has nothing to do with the hotel of course - however perhaps this was a little appropriate in that a new pool is currently under construction. The facility offered a shuttle service to another Cairns Mercure hotel where you could enjoy its pool and cafe. In my case this was an irrelevance, however I imagine for some hotel patrons it would be a bit of a pain.

There's no doubting the age of the hotel, it is in significant need of repair with my room showing signs of rust on bathroom features, a door slowly destroying itself and paint starting to part ways with plaster or concrete, or whatever it is supposed to be adhered to.

This said, I really didn't care all that much as it made no impact on the comfort or features offered in the room. The bed (two large singles butted together) was topped with a traditional soft and squeezy mattress topper for great comfort (except where the two beds join), the pillows were great, the sheets clean, the room spacious. I had an average view from my room, even so, in the morning with a sprinkling of sunshine, the partly obscured view to the mountains was lovely.

If I was to have a room directly opposite, it would have offered terrific sea views. Never mind, I wasn't there for the views!

A small balcony proved worthwhile, the bathroom was of a decent size (but with no exhaust fan), and the jug even had a nice blue light flicker on when boiling water :-) A couple of minor gripes, for me at least, was how it lacked a mini bar, and worse, the TV didn't work. It worked once (after much button pressing), but failed to do so the next day. Never mind, I had plenty of reading material! On a parting note, the toilet dribbled all night, but a call in the morning had it fixed and my next night's sleep was all the better for it.

By the way, the Mercure offers a lovely little garden with bridge and water feature, and the cafe is really quite nice. It is just that little bit off the beaten track, however a free shuttle service if offered for trips to the main city area.

Room Tip: If on holidays, make sure you ask for a sea view room.

Pay the little extra to get a room with a view of the sea. Even with this the price was very reasonable. The pool was currently being refurbished although another pool elsewhere was made available. Breakfast quite adequate but pay for it at reception as it is cheaper if you pay there. Better than average but really a 3.5 vs a 4. A bit out of town but adjacent to esplanade for a walk but there are shuttles to town. I found the staff helpful.

Room Tip: Get one with a harbour view

It’s a short hop, skip & jump to the ocean from the hotel but with crocs on the beach, you want to remain on terra firma. The staff were very friendly on arrival & helped me select activities to do in the local area. These can be booked directly at the hotel rather than at the travel agents in Cairns. It’s approx 30 mins walk to the centre of Cairns but there is a shuttle bus service every hour to & from the hotel. The staff are chatty en route so there’s no awkward silence or staring out of the window. I was in one of the upper rooms & could only get wi fi right next to my room door but the signal in reception is perfect. If you want to stay away from the traditional back packer haunts, then book yourself into a room here!

Room Tip: Rooms at the front of the hotel look out to the mountains & rooms at the back look out to the oc...

Hotel is a bit far from the main city area, taxi cost $10 to get to the Casino. Room was very big, but I was not impress with the shower (over bath) - no hand rails to hang onto (am not very steady on my feet) consequently over a 4 day period did not shower, but made great use of the hand basin! BUT the room service was great, prices ranged from medium to high. Meals beautifully prepared and tasty. Staff very friendly and helpful. All in all felt quite safe and for the value will most likely stay there again

Room Tip: Unfortunately, my room faced onto the main road. Hospital not far away and noise of ambulance siren...

The hotel is a 5 minute walk from the seaside but away from the central part of the town. Quiet area but eating options in the vicinity are limited. The hotel runs a bus once an hour to the town center- could be more frequent. Rooms are comfortable though functional. Wifi service is a bit patchy. Staff are very helpful.Breakfast is good with plenty of options

Room Tip: Rooms in the front block have a full view of the sea

We were given a super room (as in all the requests we'd asked for) with a fridge too and although it was in the rear, not the front block, we still enjoyed partial views of the ocean. It was spacious with a generous balcony and the bathroom water pressure was far greater than most hotels and quality toiletries were provided too.

The hotel Happy Hour was a firm favourite with guests (go for the Champagne) even though the bar and restaurant area are relatively small.

The majority of guests were Chinese, always milling in large groups and quite noisy. Otherwise, there was a broad smattering of business guests and the overriding atmosphere reflected this.

When we stayed, the work on the pool which started months earlier, was still not complete . Facilities were shared with the neighbouring Novotel Hotel though via an on demand shuttle service which was very efficient.

There was also a shuttle service provided to take guests to and from town throughout the day and evening which was well operated and used. There is adequate parking on site though and partially underground too (useful, when a cyclone decides to fly by your way...!)

We honestly didn't spend too much time in the hotel and I'm not sure I'd choose it over any other in the area, but as a base, it was a good enough choice.

Room Tip: Building at the front should guarantee ocean views.

Dear Viviko,

Thank you for taking the time to write a Trip Advisor post following your recent stay at Mercure Cairns Harbourside - it is always a pleasure to receive positive feedback.

I am sorry that the pool renovation was not completed by the time you came to stay, we have encountered a few unforseen delays and now have a completion date of 20th October 2014, my apologies for any inconvenience and I was happy to read that you found the Novotel swimming pool shuttle convenient.

I will share your comments with my Team I sure they will act as motivation for each individual to continue providing the high levels of guest service that our guests have become accustomed to.

If you are planning another trip to Tropical Northern Queensland I hope to welcome you back to Mercure Cairns Harbourside so you can experience the 'newest pool in Cairns'!

Best Regards,
