Got an early check in, room 2094 overlooking the pool.
Food really good specially the steak. Breakfast one of the best yet.

Eating out, plenty of restaurantsto suit all tastes and pockets would reccomend The Ocre on spence street.

Staff were excellent.

Room Tip: All rooms have good views

hotel is right on the waterfront, beside the marina. attached to the hotel is a large boardwalk filled with a large number of different restaurants with patio seating. Hotel is the place to stay in Cairns - easy walk to center of town, to the casino, to the boats

Cairns is not entirely my favourite place in Far North Queensland, an area that I know well and have visited countless times. I prefer to stay at Palm Cove because it's less frenetic. However, Cairns is a great place to use as a base when exploring FNQ - where there is so very much to see. If it's Cairns you're going to stay at, then Shangri-La Marina is a good idea. Right on the Marina, it looks out over masts and boats and there's an overall explosion of light and blue - blue water, blue sky. The sea breeze comes off the water so you don't really need the airconditioning so much (except for the risk of the odd mosquito finding its way in through the balcony door). Each room has a little balcony and table and chairs so you can look at the view and look down at the esplanade where people stroll by the selection of many restaurants. We like a queen or king sized bed each and this is one of the few hotels which offers that option. The rooms offer space and comfort and are contemporary in pastel shades. The bathrooms have a spa bath as well as a shower. The airconditioning is too cold and not very responsive to moderating. The restaurant downstairs is outdoors under cover, looking at the view and the breakfasts are excellent. The pool area looks a little tired.

Took forever to reach our room from the foyer and then the keycard wouldn't work on many occasions so had to walk all the way back to front desk again. Booked room for 3 people but only 2 cups & saucers, glasses etc. Had to ask them to make up rooms at 5.30pm each day because we needed clean towels to have a shower. Asked for early morning reminder call to wake us up for early tour departure - the call never came. Front desk staff weren't very friendly. There was no mini bar menu with prices on it. Rang desk but they didn't seem to know the prices of the liquor. By the time someone arrived at the door with a price list we were leaving to go out for the night. There was no locker room to store luggage as we had a late flight so our luggage was left just inside the door/glass window in the foyer for everyone to see or take. The staff said it would be OK, they'd watch it! All day? Thankfully it was still there when we arrived back late that afternoon. The only plus would be the position but next time I'll look along the Esplanade for something cheaper and with better service. Not worth the money.

Room Tip: Ask for a room closer to the foyer otherwise you have a very long walk if your room is looking over...

I stayed here on business twice within a few days and found the staff to be fantastic (friendly and extremely helpful). The first was a very large twin room and the second was also a very large king room.

Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff including the restaurant in the lobby where I snuck in an early takeaway coffee before the restaurant was actually open.

The room location is slightly odd with floors 1 & 2 accessible by the reception lift, but floors 3 & 4 required you to catch the lift beside reception, but then walk through the hotel and catch a second lift to the 3rd and 4th floor. Its not really any inconvenience but probably would be if you had a lot of luggage with you.

I found the beds in both of the rooms I stayed in to be really comfortable and room service was prompt and tasty. The only comment I would have is that the in room menu states (in small print) that room service is at an additional cost of $10 per use - I would expect that items on the menu would have included all service charges as I found this a bit misleading when looking at the prices of the meals.

The hotel is in a great location with a short walk into the city and an even shorter walk to the large range of restaurants on the esplanade as well as to the Ferry where the reef day trips run from. Some of the rooms overlook the harbour while others have a garden view or city view.

The hotel is pricey if you are watching your money and I am sure that there are cheaper hotels which are closer to the city, but if you want a bit of an oasis to escape to after a long day, this is the hotel for you.

We stayed for one night in October. We were on a Tauck tour and were supposed to fly to Sydney - but were affected by the Qantas lockout, so we stayed a night in Cairns at the Shangri La.

Checkin was quick and efficient.
The room was very large, and the beds very comfortable. The view was great.
The location was good - about a 5 minute walk to the main shopping area of Cairns.
Furnishings were probably 4 star, not 5, but still very nice - there was a nice big desk to work at and lots of counter space.
The bathroom was huge, had lots of counter space, and was well lit.
Internet access was free (yay!) and worked very well. So many high end hotels want to charge you $30 a day for internet access.
Staff were friendly and helpful.
We ate at the restaurant for breakfast, and it was excellent.
Didn't use the fitness centre, which was a health club in the attached mall on the main floor.

The only complaint would be the long walk to the room. The hotel is only a few stories high, but very, very wide. So the trip from the lobby to your room can be very far indeed.

All in all, a great stay.

Thank you for your overall recommendation of our Hotel to others as well as for taking the time to share your comments with fellow travellers.

I am pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. I do note your comment regarding the walk to some rooms. As you can appreciate, our Hotel has been designed to make the most of the wonderful Marina views we are blessed with. This may mean that some guests may need to walk to some rooms but I think you would agree, the views are certainly worth the walk!

Thank you again for taking the time to post your review and we do hope to see you back here in Cairns soon.

When is a king bed not a king bed? When you push 2 single bed ensembles together and use king size sheets and doona. My wife and I prefer to stay in king rooms for the comfort and room sizes etc that you enjoy. So that's what we chose for our 4 nights here, a king deluxe room.
The hotel is unquestionably in the best location in Cairns, on the marina overlooking the bay on one side or the marina's moorings on the other. On ground level is a shopping mall (although half the shops were empty) and around the outside overlooking the bay were about 10 quality restaurants and a bar that sells cheap meals ($12.50) and Coronas for $3.50 all day.
The rooms and bathrooms were of a reasonable standard (not 5 star furniture but certainly 4) all have a balcony with table and chairs for 2. We had a large bath and separate shower with nice towels and good quality toiletries.
The bed however was extremely disappointing and whybwe won't be back. Two single bases and mattresses pushed together is not a king by any other hotel's standards that we have previously enjoyed (Hilton, Sheraton, Stamford, Marriotts etc) around the world. These are soft spring mattresses too so imagine how uncomfortable it was for us to cuddle each other in bed when the middle area of the bed is a hard peak created by the two mattress edges pushed together with soft valleys on either side - just impossible to tolerate so you end up squashed together on one side until you can't take it anymore. When I complained I was told that they had just completed a mattress replacement program so that's it, no change.
This was my first time at a Shangri La but if I return to Cairns I'll stay at the Hilton around the corner next time.

Room Tip: Don't choose a king bed, they just push two single beds together, go for a queen size and hope i...
