Recently had a two night stay in Cairns. Having been disappointed by last accommodation, had a walk around that visit looking at other options. Walking along the marina boardwalk it was clear to see the Shangri-La was in a superb location, fronting right onto the marina!

Booking was handled via email, as I was discussing different options as my preferred room wasn't available for this stay. Everything went smoothly with booking.

Arriving around 1130am in a tourist shuttle bus, the hotel staff were quickly on hand to offer assistance, but I was travelling lightly to handled this myself. Check in was prompt, efficient and friendly. Thrilled to be able to check in at that time. There is also an early arrivals lounge available if the room wasn't ready.

The room was a marina view room, and the view was certainly great. there is a small verandah with a wooden table and two chairs. A lovely place to sit and watch the boats come and go, the joggers, and the strollers.

The room was very clean and tidy, the bed a zip apart king size, and the bathroom featured a separate (asian style) bath and shower.

On the official website it is hard to get a sense of the pool facilities, but you had to walk past the pool to get to our room wing. The pool is actually three pools, on three levels. The top smaller pool has shade covering, which I made great use of. Water from this pool cascades into the larger main pool. This pool is quite massive, maybe 25 metres in length and 8 or so metres in width. It is deep enough to be able to swim laps! Many, including myself, did plenty of laps. There is a third smaller pool which I think may be for children, but I did not see this used. The pool has lovely underwater and mood lighting after dark. Having said that, the pool closes at 8pm. But I think I saw people using it later, so I'm not sure of the strictness. It would be great to have a swim later in the night after a busy day.

It would be great if some photos of the pool area made it to the hotel website. If hotel management are reading, i'm available for hire to come and take some great photos of the grounds for you, and a few shots of the pool area!

The hotel is located on the esplanade, beside the lagoon and a very short walk to the esplanade shops. I could not fault the service, the room or the location. Price may be a little high for some, but you can certainly get good value with specials if you are prepared to wait and possibly miss your preferred room type.

Room Tip: Marina View is excellent

I don't know why I'd stay anywhere else in Cairns. Good professional service at a decent price. Great buffet breakfast that was included in the room rate. Only one negative and that was room service was a bit slow to make up the room and didn't replenish toiletries but then again, I didn't say anything either - if I did I'm sure they would have been there to fix it up in a flash.

Room Tip: The rooms further away from the lifts are more private on the balcony

We all have mixed feelings with this hotel. It has the best location and the staff is wonderful. To my disappointment, the upgrade I asked from an email I sent prior arrival was not addressed. We found the room and hallway looking a bit tired. Maybe a few artwork on the wall will lift the areas. No biscuits in the coffee/tea facility. Ants in our room. Mould in the bathroom. Vents covered with dust. Power loss in our room the first night. No goodies for the little one (unlike other hotels we've been to and stayed with). Although that "wow factor" you expect to get from a 5 star hotel is missing, the staff made us feel welcome and special.

OK so it's not up there with the best of the Shangri-La hotels but as one of three hotels we stayed at in Far North Queensland, it still rates as the best of the three. The hotel is an easy walk for everything in town. All staff were excellent and very attentive from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. They all gave the impression that they were very happy to be there. Valet parking for our rental car was $4 a day more than using the car park - $4 well spent. Our room was modern, over looking the harbour, spotlessly clean and spacious. Bed was super comfy, toileteries really lovely. We had access to the Horizon Club which served complimentary breakfast in the morning and drinks and canapés early evening. Food was good, especially breakfast - lovely fresh fruit and the BEST fruit toast! Canapés were hit and miss but the wine was very good. They also mixed a great G&T. We ate one night in North, the hotel restaurant. Excellent value, beautifully cooked food and a view over the harbour. We booked off a late booking website and were made to feel like we were the most important people in the hotel. A definite winner!

Room Tip: If you're travelling out of season, ask for a better room than you've been allocated. You mi...

We stayed at some lovely hotels on our trip (Syndey, Ayres Rock, Cairns, Green Island, Blue Mountains and Sydney again) but the Shangri-La was the best.
From the moment we arrived the staff made us feel so welcome - reception even printed an email that we needed and posted it under our door. The internet was free, which made a big difference for us travelling from the UK as we were trying to keep in touch with family via facebook.
The porter that took us to our room told us some great tips for snorkelling on Green Island too. (thanks we did see Nemo)
We upgraded (before arrival) to the Horizon Club but it was well worth the extra as the room was amazing - we could see right to the harbour from our bathroom (glass wall, between bathroom and bedroom). The pre-dinner drinks and nibbles (more like tapas dinner) would have kept us in the hotel all night if wasn't for the fact that we wanted to see some of the city. Which we did as everything was in walking distance and we had a good few days and evenings out. Going on the train and skyrail upo Kuranda was also well worth a visit as we got to hold a Koala in Kuranda. We didn't know before we arrived but Queensland is one of the only states that allow you hold a Koala so take this opportunity if you are lucky enough to choose the Shangri-La as your hotel.

Room Tip: Definitely go for Horizon

Low level sprawling hotel with aspirations that aren't quite met. When first built I imagine the foyer would've been quite something however given its scale coupled with the dark grey granite it tends to feel more imposing than welcoming and has no relevance to tropical far north Queensland. In fact it's a very 'executive/business' feel more at home in a large international city than Cairns. The adjoining shopping mall is a disaster although the restaurants and bars on the buildings exterior overlooking the marina or park are winners. As is the large pool area. Room size is very good although showing its age a little. I found the bed very soft and the A/C quite loud.Breakfast is no better or worse than most 4 or 5 star hotels. For a couple of nights it's fine although I'm not sure that I'd pay a premium to stay here and definitely wouldn't stay here for an extended period or if you wanted a Cairns experience.
