“isolated”
Reviewed 19 November 2010

The structure itself was nice - swimming pool, restaurants etc. Apart from some ants in the room, the place is quite "isolated" - you cant just walk out of the hotel and drop in a nearby bar for a drink... Next time, for the same price, I would definately choose a place in a "lively" center.

Thank you for taking time to post your review.
I'm glad you enjoyed our 11acres of land, 3 swimming pools and 2 restaurants.
Unfortunately, the tropical environment sometimes challenges us by providing critters such as ants.
We certainly are not a downtown resort.
However, we do have 2 restaurants and 2 bars on site. A regular city bus transfer, available at a nominal fee, takes guests into the city throughout the day and into the evening - the last bus from the resort leaves at 9:40pm for the city.
I trust you enjoyed your time in our part of the world and look forward to welcoming you back soon.

I landed in Cairns on a fluke as my friend in Sydney was deathly ill when I arrived from USA. She bought me a ticket and sent me to Cairns for a few days to enjoy Australia without her. Landed with no hotel and no car. A taxi driver took me to Colonial and I'm glad he did. LOVED Agnes and other staff members who went out of their way to ensure satisfaction. Its a bit run down and I stayed in an older room but it was quiet and tons of birds, to my liking.
NEVER rent from Cairns Cruising Rentals - Michael. He's a thief and a liar.
Just go to this hotel, close to grocery store and off the main drag but a safe, friendly place.

Thank you for your review.
Glad you got to experience Rusty's Markets, which are held Fridays through Sundays - great opportunity to see us locals buying our wonderfully fresh fruit and veg.
We love Agnes too and am so happy to read that other staff made you feel comfortable during your stay - we do believe our staff are our best assett...!
I trust your friend has made a speedy recovery and that your enjoyed your time in Tropical North Queensland.

We were excited to stay here overnight enroute to Singapore as we stayed here in the 80's when it first opened and it truly lived up to its name then. We lived in Cairns then and took pride in recommending the place and taking visitors there for meals and drinks, as well as staying there for local mini-breaks. It really did have a lovely relaxing atmosphere. It's so different now!! They have maps posted everywhere and you need them to find your way around. Very group/family orientated and very noisy. We had a good room (upgraded to poolside room) with a terrace and a reasonable price, but lots of noise from outside. Felt a bit like an upmarket Butlin's holiday camp. Nice room, very clean, no wifi in room, breakfast not included. In a way I'm sorry we stayed there as it's destroyed the earlier memories of a laid-back, beautiful place which used to have heaps of character. It's still an adequate place to stay, has lovely (named) plants, but has lost its soul.

Thank you for taking time to write about your recent stay with us.
As the resort has grown (with new buildings and growing gardens) over its 25-year history, it has been necessary to introduce resort maps, some of which are illuminated aroudn the reosrt to ensure guests can easily find their way around the 11-acres of tropical gardens.
The local market continues to be one of our strongest supporters along withcontinued growth from all international markets.
We do look forward to the possibility of welcoming you back to the resort soon.
With Kind Regards
Paolo

We, along with 50 friends and family stayed here for our wedding in October 2010.
They gave us an amazing rate of $350 for 7 nights. We were all able to stay in ght esame area of the resort and we were very well looked after.
The gardens and pool areas are amazing, our 2 year old son loved the kids pool and we were very happy with EVERYTHING.
The staff here was amazing on the day and would do anything to help out...

Thank you so much for taking time to write about your wonderful experiences during your stay with us.
The super rate you mention was a very successful campaign which ran for a short period. The spread out nature of the resort ensures that large groups, such as yours, can usually be accommodated in their own section of the resort.
Our free-standing conference centre continues to ooze the charm of a true colonial-style building and trust you managed to take lots of wedding pics around it and our lush, tropical gardens.
Good luck to you in your future wedded life and we look forward to welcoming you and yours back to our part of the world sometime soon...!

We stayed here for five nights recently for $70 per night, and were upgraded to a resort room, perhaps because it was very early in the season and they wanted to fill the hotel - whatever, the reason we thought it was a nice gesture. However, we also stayed for a night in a standard double room so can comment on both.
I would agree with other reviewers that the hotel is a little run-down and does have the feel that it has had better days. However, it is not over-priced for this area (you cannot expect to get a hotel within walking distance of the centre for prices as low as this) and does well on the basics - cleanliness, restaurant food, room size, number of pools, laundry and internet facilities. The negatives for us were the quality of the food at the poolside cafe, which is really quite poor, and the chaise longue by the pool, the cushions and plastic of which were dirty from age and really do need replacing.
The biggest plus, with the exception of one curt concierge, is the staff, who are polite, down-to-earth and extremely friendly. This is really a resort hotel on a budget, and as travellers on a budget it met our expectations.

The location of the resort is a little out of town, so it is recommended to hire your own car, as the resort shuttle costs $3 one way per adult into town, and takes 15-20 mins as it goes via another hotel.
There were a number of discrepencies with price. Wotif.com offered a rainforest room for $90/night, the resort website offered the same room for $104 whilst to phone the resort, i was offered a 'local special' of $165/night!!
The amenities were rundown, but the inside of the rooms were modern and updated. Two TV's and two air conditioning units were installed, one for the bed room and one for the lounge room (in the rainforest room).
The 'beach' along side one of the lagoon style pools was a powder coat of sand, and no kids could dig in it to make sand castles. The place seemed a little understaffed and only 2 high chairs were available in the resort restaurant, so if they were used up, you kid either ran feral or you didnt eat there (we chose not to eat there).
The rooms were very quiet and the curtains were great for blocking out light, day or night, so it was great for sleeping.
But remember we did only pay $90/night.

Thank you for taking time to provide your comments.
Please note that the resort is located just out of the downtown area of Cairns (4Km approx) spread over 11acres of land.
A taxi into town will cost AUD$20approx. depending on the time of travel.
I'm happy to read that you enjoyed the rooms with their updated and modern feel.
I'm also pleased to advise that we have quite a number of high chairs available throughout the resort and our restaurant staff would have been more than willing to provide one for your use during your stay.
Our children's playground has an area of soft sand for "sand play" along with a number of children's activities within an enclosed area just off the poolside cafe area.
We look forward to welcoming you and your families to the resort again soon.

If you are looking for a classy stay in the tropics don't stay at the Colonial Club. Having stayed here years ago and finding the resort lovely it has gone completely down hill. Like staying a bad holiday camp. Rooms not great people smoking outside the rooms which 'leaks' under the doors. Food in the restaurant and the pool-side bar are dreadful. Gets a one star as the pools are still quite nice. If you were backpacking and wanted a step up from a dorm this may be what you are looking for otherwise don't stay there.
