Rydges Plaza Cairns
Ranked #58 of 63 Hotels in Cairns
Reviewed 4 December 2011

A post-midnight 8-hour transit stop in Cairns had us looking for a hotel room to catch a little sleep before heading on to Tokyo. So when the Wotif deal of the day featured the four star Rydges Plaza for $99 with breakfast for two, I snapped it up. We stayed Friday, 2 December.

It's an older style hotel, and their recent "refreshment" program has been carefully thought out. They've made some very clever innovations, adding minor touches at minimal cost, that have made a big difference to the look and amenity of the room.

For example, they've provided a suite of connections below the flat-screen telly that allow you to plug in your various devices for charging without having the actual charger... USB sockets etc. There's also a HDMI connection so, with the right cable, you could easily throw your laptop signal to the telly. Not seen that before in a hotel.

And the room, particularly the bathroom, was VERY clean. My partner who works as a building manager said he'd happily swap his cleaning staff for the team here, and he's a real stickler! The bathroom's also had a minor tweak, though its seventies or eighties origins still show through.

My one real bugbear about the Rydges Plaza came up before we even saw the room. Checking in at 4am, and then later flying out at midday, we were looking forward to a couple of hours sleep, then a quick brekky before heading back to the airport. But the guy on night reception informed us that the last seating for breakfast was 9am! In a four star hotel? Really? And especially one in a resort town with a potential "airline hub" market in the fray. Needless to say we slept through and ate on the plane.

Dear Guest,
Rydges Plaza certainly is handy to the Cairns airport for these type of stop over’s and the media hubs are great for reviewing those holidays snaps.
Our fresh breakfast buffet does extend through to 10am on the weekends so my sincere apologies for you missing this important inclusion in your booking. One solution could have been our Rydges boxed breakfast's for early departures (or guests that are on different time zones) If we are aware prior we will do whatever we can to accommodate any out of hours guest requests.
Thank you also for the feedback on our star housekeepers!
Regards
Lisa

We were a family of four travelling with 2 older children who had their own room. We purchased our tickets through Wotif for $99 per room per night, we received bedding configuration of two doubles, breakfast, free parking and late checkout of 12pm. Our rooms were located on the 8th floor, they were clean, however the bathrooms were very tired and dated and are need of renovation. Staff were helpful and service was great. The Hotel is located very close to the Marina, Esplanade and local restaurants, also close to name brand shops and the Myer Centre (Cairns Central). Value for money we would definitely stay here again.

Dear Sunshine Coast family,
Thank you for sharing some of the top reasons to stay at Rydges Plaza. Great location, beds and lilo restaurant! I hope you were also able to make use of the awesome guest pool and deck looking over the city.
Your positive comments regarding the Plaza team are really appreciated, thank you.

TIP: Our deluxe rooms featuring beautifully renovated bathrooms might be a good option for your next Cairns trip.

Look forward to seeing you all again soon,

Spent 3 nights at Rydges Plaza Cairns and give it 5 stars for the superbly comfortable beds and bedding incl. down pillows and doonas. This would be the most comfortable hotel beds we have experienced in many years of travel. We even photographed the labels on the pillows and doonas to try to get the same for home...

Great central location, the breakfast was good, and the room price was great value, late checkout no worries.... We have stayed at many different locations in Cairns (we visit several times a year) and this is the one hotel that we'll be coming back to.

Room Tip: We stayed on level 10 - a nice view...

Dear Neil C,
We are so pleased you loved our Dream Beds as much as we do. Cairns is having fanatstic weather at the moment and your view from the deluxe room would have been wonderful.
Tip: By visiting rydges.com you can follow the link to purchase your very own Dream Bed, happy shopping.

Look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Stayed for business and was only $100pn off their website specials if you joined the rydges priority club. 24hr reception was great as i didn't get in until after 11pm. Had to pay for parking $10pn. I would stay again if i was only after a standard hotel room with no kitchenette etc. Central location and plenty of restaurants short walk from hotel.

Good points: The location is excellent - central to everything in Cairns. The use of the local gym was great - as it provided much more than a hotel gym (good range of classes, equipment etc). The dream beds were lovely and the room service crew were efficient.

Improvement points: Our room was in serious need of refurbishment. The 1970's style bathroom let it down. Also the air conditioning could not be turned off at all, so there was a constant noise and cold (all we could do when it got cooler at night was choose a 'warmer' setting of cold!). The staff could do with some training in customer service. We were there for 11 nights and tried to engage in a friendly way, but got almost nothing in return. Another disappointment was no movies in the room. We asked if there was a DVD player, but there wasn't (although there was space to plug one in). There were also no pay for movies and no Fox movie channel provided. Luckily the movie theatre was only a block away. We were asked to pay for the key for the in-room safe. Not just a deposit, but a daily amount. The staff member claimed this was common practice in all hotels. I have stayed in a lot of hotels, but have never had to pay before.

The hotel is about to go a refurbishment. However, it appears they have only got as far as the Lilo wet bar and restaurant area (and this features in all the advertising making it look newer than it actually is). This space is lovely, although some thought could have been given to the placement of the swimming pool which loses the sun in the early afternoon (by about 2.30pm) as it drops behind the hotel. Also as this area is rented out for functions, as a hotel guest - you sometimes felt unwelcome in the bar. Good that they are doing general events there though such as the Sunday Session and Jazz, Gin & Olives night.

Room Tip: You would probably want to ask for the deluxe room to get a better bathroom

The rooms a bit old fashioned bur are very spacious. Our room had 3 single beds, the view was marvellous. The reception staff was very courteous, Its in the center of the city with numerous indian vegetarian restaurants around.

Pros:
Large bed
Management staff was quite nice.
Nice view from window.
Location is the best thing as it is right in the middle of everything or within 10 minute walking distance. (There isn't much in terms of public transit in Cairns so location is important)

Cons:
Non-management staff not pleasant. Questions seemed more like a bother.
No free wif/broadband and it is unreasonably expensive to purchase.
Constant draft from window
Every question/request seemed like it was either too much to handle for the staff or they just couldn't help you out. Like I said management was nice however, it was the rest of the staff you normally had to deal with.

Dear Guest,
My heartfelt apologies for the disappointing customer service your have experienced at our hotel. It is so important when visiting from abroad or interstate to feel comfortable and welcome in your new surroundings. I thank you for sharing as it is only through feedback such as yours that we may improve.
I hope your trip to beautiful Cairns otherwise was an enjoyable one, with the rainforest and reef activities so close at hand Rydges Plaza is certainly well placed to easily enjoy them all.

I hope we have the opportunity see you back again one day at Plaza,

Regards
Lisa
