We visit Cairns every 6 months and thought we would give this a try. Never again. The room was very small - 2 double beds when we wanted a queen. Towel's had holes in them, the sheets were not crisp, the bathroom was not clean and the door was very damaged. Bed needed replacing. Plus the location and all those bats - I know that isn't the hotels fault but wish I had check Tripadvisor first.

We booked the Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort through Airmiles earned at Tesco, so it didn't cost us anything for our 4 night stay. Because we used Airmiles, we had little choice of the hotel we could stay in and this one seemed the best value for money.

After booking and on reading reviews, I was a little concerned about the bat problem, however, we had a room on the top floor right next to the trees that they roost in and to be honest, they were not a problem. Yes they made noise, and smell, but with the doors closed you could not detect either. Unless you have a real phobia about bats, they are actually quite interesting.

Our room was large enough for 2, clean and well equipped. Correct, there is no free in room wifi but it works well in reception if you can find a seat amongst the hoards of Chinese. The room had a large comfortable bed, a good supply of clean towels and a decent shower. The aircon was very quiet, although we did turn it down to 20 as opposed to the recommended 24 degrees.

The bar downstairs has a happy hour at 6 and I suggest you use it as otherwise it is quite expensive and shuts at about 10pm. we did not eat in the hotel, aside from one breakfast when we had an early start. This was also expensive and the food was of a mediocre quality, the type you usually find in business hotels in the UK. A better bet is to wander the few hundred metres into town and find a cafe for freshly cooked, hot, cheap food.

The pool area was good, we camped out there one afternoon after a dive trip. There is an artificial beach at one end of the pool and the children seemed to take great delight in digging it up and spreading it round the pool side. Sun loungers are a bit thin on the ground and many of them seemed to have towels on them but nobody ever turned up to lie on them. There is a small poolside bar, but it only opens till 6ish, even though the pool is open till 10. There is also a gas barBQ by the pool that is free to use by residents, the hotel will even sell you the meat to go on it.

If you want to avoid most of the bat poo when you walk into town, use the back entrance to the hotel and cross directly over Abbot Street towards the sea. All of the pavements around the hotel are covered in poo and it gets very slippery when it rains, especially on Lake and Aplin Streets.

All in all, an OK hotel that was perfect for our needs, close enough to town but just far enough away that it was quiet. Better still, it was free.

Room Tip: The hotel consists of about 8 blocks. If you hate bats, ask for a room high up overlooking the pool...

This hotel is ideally located between the town centre and the Esplanade. If you are taking a trip to the Reef then it's only a 10 minute walk away to the harbour where the boats are moored. The rooms are nice and comfortable and our kids loved the pool area which is well designed. We found the price to be very reasonable and on a future trip we'll most certainly check this hotel again first. As for the bats, I see many people complaining, but we found them to be enjoyable tropical companions. It's an impressive sight to watch as thousands of bats take off at sunset. Of course they do poop and pee and you don't want that nasty stuff on you. The solution is to not walk around under their trees! We actually did anyway but didn't have any incidents.
