“The Best Choice in Cairns”
Reviewed 25 February 2012

I was so happy I seleted this hotel in Cairns. The location is great and it was so nice because I had an upper floor and had a great view looking out towards the ocean. Everything is in walking distance. The lobby and hotel decor are beautiful. The room was spacious and very clean. I would highly recommend this hotel if you are planning a stay in Cairns. I would also highly recommend taking a Great Barrier Reef snorkeling trip out of Port Douglas with Wavelength. They arranged for transportation to and from the hotel. They were top notch! I also recommend a bus ride up to the Kuranda Village where you can actually hold a Koala Bear!

We got mini bus from airport to hotel, went to 5 hotels before dropping us off at ours.cost $20 for two.a taxi cost $23,took us straight to hotel. The sebel looked impressive as we pulled up,the hotel lobby was lovely, cool amd calm.Check in lady was delightful and very helpful.we were given the choice of the 6th floor with one bed or 16th floor with two beds.I thought she meant twin beds but when we got to the room is was two double beds. The room was a lovely suprise, large, very clean and quite luxurious.Balcony with fantastic views of city, mountains, sky and ocean at the side.so if you choose a city view room you wont be getting second best.We used the pool which was quite warm.Loungers very comfy.also two covered gazebo's with curtains for shade that can sit around 6.you can pick up pool towels from the area by the door as you enter pool area.we used these towels to take out to the gbr the next day.just remember to bring them back!!we never ate in the hotel as it was quite expensive.but there are loads of eating places around the hotel.the shops, esplanade lagoon, marina and restraunts are easy walking distance from hotel.the hotel reception lends out large brollies when its raining.when we were there feb it rained most of the time and was very humid.

Room Tip: top 3 floors.city view was great.

Good size rooms, friendly staff, top location. Can get noisy though when facing the street at night. Great breakfast (highly recommend paying the extra for the barista made hot chocolate)

Room Tip: Avoid a room facing the casino - tends to attract noisy lingering people.

The Sebel deal for $129 gave us a lovely room, a bottle of wine and a late check out. The room was slightly worn yet the decoration was very tasteful and the view lovely. The spa bath kept me busy for a few hours! We ordered room service - a spatchcock chicken which was very small without much meat but my partner's club sandwich order looked delicious and he made short work of it licking his lips.

Wouldn't hesitate to stay again. Well worth the trip to Cairns.

Stayed in the harbour view room - unfortunately that part is undergoing some works and the harbour is much to be desired for. Great size room, with a great size balcony. Shower facilities were clean. In room air conditioning was great considering the humidity outside.
Pool was great and newly refurbished. Walk into CBD is about 5 minutes, walk to night markets around 7-10 minutes. Great concierge service in assisting to book your tours etc.
Sebel Cairns also have an agreement with AVIS (In town location) where AVIS will drop off and pick up your car from the hotel as opposed from you having to go to the location yourself.
Will stay there again and definitely recommend.

Stayed two nights in 6th floor queen bed room. The first thing we noticed was the old television, not flat screen as would expect in a five star establishment. The small table had the top lifting due to moisture damage and a very sparse mini bar. The room was clean and spacious, and the bathroom was large and the balcony had a glimpse of water between buildings. The extras were over the top however, $15.95 for a movie on a tv which was below standard, a safe was in the room but you had to pay extra for that, the parking a ridiculous $20.00 per night, the continental breakfast $26.00, and i had to pay $5.50 for half an hour internet in the business lounge to print off my boarding pass, but the computer would not allow me to do it, so more money down the drain! The staff were nice and friendly. I wonder how some places acheive a five star rating as I have stayed in much cheaper 4 star establishments which make this pace look like a 3 star. I suppose you have to pay for the big flash foyer somehow!

We stayed 2 nights in a 10th floor Harbour View room - more like glimpses between the other buildings. However we could easily see the 8am flotilla heading out to the reef & could see some of the mountains to our right.

Buffet breakfast was great ...lots of different food choices & they even had a chef on hand to make a personalised omelette or eggs! The fresh passion fruits were delicious!

The Sebel foyer is very open & grand, large selection of seats/sofas, if you are meeting friends. Lots of antique furniture dotted around the foyer area. Our room & bathroom were just above average for 5 star hotel! We stayed in the Pullman Casino on the same trip & that room was much bigger, better bathroom with double vanity & a separate toilet room! Though in Pullman our cheaper room meant cheaper views! So its all relative!

After we checked out we were offered a pass to the large pool area with 2 medium size pools with 2 spas... very nice palm trees planted on the roof, including a grassed area & gazebo ...on the roof!! VERY nice area just to chill & hang out! This area also had good & clean bathrooms & chilled filtered water on tap which is a nice touch! Waiter service to the pool area was easy to organise & cost standard prices for this service.

Our main gripes - not enough shaded lounges by the pool. While they have a totally covered area with chairs for eating & another area by the pool with about 8 lounges & 3 umbrellas (shading 2 lounges each), this all fills up rather quickly! The majority of the lounges are not shaded, which is a problem in the Tropics & we got badly sunburnt as we sweat off our suncreen a bit quicker than we thought we did!! The Cairns Pullman Casino had more shaded lounges!

The only other thing is that the interconnecting doors between our & the next room were not in anyway soundproof, so we could hear a teething toddler cry all night & the new parents trying to calm the poor child ..the Sebel very professionally dealt with this by easily changing our room in the morning & offering help with our bags. It was not Sebel's fault, kids are kids!
However who needs interconnecting rooms in 2012?
