“Clean & tidy”
Reviewed 2 June 2014

Rydges Esplanade is an older property, typical of many in Cairns.

The positives: the rooms are spacious, the beds are comfy, the views are lovely. I was on the 12th floor, overlooking the ocean, hillside and Cairns city - got some great sunrise and night shots. The service at front desk is great, my room was unexpectedly ready on arrival at 7:30am - a pleasant surprise. This is one of the larger hotels in the city which is a good thing for big group stays.

There are only a few negatives: as mentioned, the rooms overall are tired and in need of a renovation - the mini hairdryer connected to the wall in the bathroom & looked straight out of the 80s, as does the decor overall. I had the buffet breakfast on the first morning - I wasn't too impressed with the fruit flies all over the fruit.. but in saying that, my colleague was happy with his buffet breakfast.

Do note this hotel is not within an easy walking distance to the city centre/ clubs/ marina - although you can take a taxi for only around $10 one way.

Overall it's spacious, clean and tidy with lovely views and good service.

We booked at a very reasonable room rate and chose the mountain view room. The room had a great view of the local area and mountains. It was clean but a bit dated however this did not concern us. We liked the location which is on the fringe of the city. We dined in the restaurant on the three days for breakfast and twice for dinner. The fire and ice buffet is outstanding.

Room Tip: We were happy on the sixth floor corner.

We were lucky to get access to our room early and so grateful we had done as it was immediately apparent that the mattress needed replacing. Had we gone off exploring we'd have returned very late to an extremely had nights sleep.
Once we brought the attention of the reception staff to our dilemma we were swiftly re-roomed and on our way. Our new room was a little larger, but basically the same, with a decent mattress which meant when we returned as weary explorers late that night we gratefully collapsed into a comfortable bed and had a wonderful sleep.
Breakfast was the usual standard, nothing fancy but generally edible and made you feel you were getting value for money. The only exception would be the coffee, avoid at all costs. Such a shame that they don't put one of the staff on to working the barista machine that is next to the main eating area. It would make such a shame and "lift" the whole station- not to mention spread a wonderful smell that would say "come here!"

We booked when there was an offer on months ago and when we normally do this we don't get the best rooms in the house, if you know where I am coming from. But to our surprise we got a room looking out over the Coral Sea !
The layout of the hotel is not how you would normally drive in, thus one is in the side, parking is via an underground parking lot and easy to get back to the lobby, but you do have to bring your cases with you as there is not an elevator in the car park. The reception is large, simply decorated and plenty of staff to assist if required, nice looking bar but we never got to try it out. The room was spacious, clean a little basic but the view made up for that.
It is around 1 to 1.5 km from the town centre, but the walk is nice and flat and you can chose three different routes, taxi fare around $12 one way.
Not a bad place to stay will comeback again.

Stayed one night at this hotel and one night at their partner hotel: Rydges Tradewinds. Both had excellent service and very friendly and helpful reception staff. They even organised to transfer my big diving bag from one hotel to the other whilst I was away on a day trip (after a little prompting and suggestion as is generally needed in Queensland to get things done). Rooms were what you would expect for the price which was very reasonable having booked from popular discount website. Better room in the Esplanade Resort (which was actually cheaper price) over looking the sea/pool, although the shower was better in the Tradewinds hotel (more shower power). Generally speaking both very good and I would stay at either again (for the discounted price).

both the Rydges group hotels I stayed in in Cairns have very old carpets and in filthy condition.
The lighting wattage is so low you have a hard time reading anything without taking the shades off the lamps.. but it was easy to see the condition of the carpets.

We stayed 4 nights in an ocean view room. View was awesome, room is very tired although beds very comfortable. Reading lights not working via switches and furniture scratched and worn. Staff friendly and helpful and pool area is lovely although after about 2pm in the day it is shaded over by the hotel and so no good for sunbaking. They do have a shuttle bus that will take you into city 3 times a day, although it is only about 10 min walk from hotel anyway.
