“Room was pretty good.”
Reviewed 29 December 2012

Upon arrival we were set up with keys to enter our rooms and were given a map to show us how to get to our building. Once we got to the building, we saw that there were no elevators, only stairs. Having to carry 2 suitcases up some stairs in 30+ degree heat killed me! The room was well air conditioned and came with a kitchenette and lounge area. We didn't have much of a view (just of the street). The pool areas were beautiful however upon attempting to go to the gymnasium, there was a sign saying that it is closed for maintenance which was a bummer.Staying 1 night only, I was pretty satisfied. There are definitely many other places i would choose next time but this was recommended to me by my travel agent so i could not say no!

There are plenty of other great places to stay in Cairns and I fully intend upon skipping The Lakes next time! The air conditioners didn't work in 2 of our rooms. The luggage was to have been picked up and transported to the front desk. It did not happen. THERE ARE NO ELEVATORS! Keep this in mind if you choose this hotel. There is a charming little restaurant at the resort but it is not the best food. All in all, it was not a pleasant stay. Gorgeous grounds are deceiving. Nothing else was worth noting.

Room Tip: Choose the ground floor if you have a lot of luggage! There are no lifts! (elevators)

I have just spent a couple of days at the lakes resort and spa in Cairns. I have stayed there a few times of the past 5 years or so and have always been more than happy, up until this time that is. I booked through their website a couple of months ago. I arrived on the Friday and they had no booking for me and my family. They weren't fully booked so were able to arrange a room. When we got to the room there was a strange smell, turns out the gas had been left on. One thing I have always liked about the lakes was the great verandahs. We brought our bags in and went to sit out side and relax, I was so disappointed to find the whole verandah covered in mould, with shutters broken and lying on the ground. It looked as though no maintenance had been done or cleaning for a long time. I asked to change rooms, which they did, but never even apologised for the total stuff up they had caused. The next room was better, but still not great. I think I am so disappointed, because it is a great place or should I say was a great place. But not repairs seems to have been done in a long time. decking around the pool needs a lot of work, overall the whole place needs to have a makeover. I will not be staying here again and would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

We wanted to relax and regroup after a family holiday in Japan and before we flew home to Perth.
We wanted to be self contained, self sufficient and within easy reach of roads and the airport. We wanted to be quiet and to swim in pools. The Lakes ticked all those boxes. The staff are helpful and friendly and unobtrusive, the grounds are beautifully maintained and although it has to be said the interiors are about due for a lick of fresh paint we were happy and satisfied with our stay at The Lakes. It is a great place to use as a base for Carins. I would recommend it for families.

Room Tip: The two bedroom apartment, 514, is huge.

We stayed here in mid Nov for 4 days. There were 6 of us and we had 3 different apartments.
We requested early check in of 10.30am, however, when we arrived there, nothing was ready for us. We also requested to have rooms near each other, and it was great that the staff accommodated that.

Rooms are basic, but have everything you could possibly need for a home away from home. lounge, dining, kitchen, bathroom, laundy (with dryer) as well as separate bedroom. It was great!

The only downside is if you request pool towels or more soap, tissues, shampoo/conditioner etc. You are charged more money.

The air con in the lounge/tv room wasn't working, we requested it to be fixed, however, no one came and sorted this out for us.
The TV was also a little broken, we could not go up/down channels with the remote.

Our room key could open the other two rooms that were booked under our name - bizarre.

Shower's were great, washing machine & dryer came in very handy and we even had underground parking space for the minivan we hired.

Overall the experience was great, the swimming pools however, weren't as big as they appear on the pictures.

Room Tip: Choose a room closer to the exits, sometimes it takes a while to get out/in

We recently stayed at The Lakes Resort as part of a tour in Australia for the total solar eclipse. We were in a group of 33, and each single or couple was assigned to a two-bedroom unit. Our apartment was clean, odor free and had quite new furniture. The distribution of keys for our group was handled very well; each of us received a map indicating the building and unit where we would stay. Our building was obviously newer and had an elevator, but others in the group reported that theirs did not. As previously mentioned elsewhere, the AC was very good, and sleeping was comfortable. We really appreciated the in-unit washer and dryer and immediately did 3 loads of laundry as we had been on the road for awhile. There was one packet of laundry detergent provided, and the toiletries and towels were of good quality. Our group ate in the on-site Italian restaurant (with a pre-arranged fixed menu), and the food was good and plentiful. We also had a pizza there one evening, and it was good as well. Breakfast was served in another location (the Rambutan), and it was a buffet with multiple choices. There was a Japanese tour group there as well; the restaurant seemed to be used only for such group events.
The grounds are lovely, and we had a view directly onto one of the pools. There were obviously residents coming and going, but we were not bothered by noise or traffic. I guess that the lesson here would be that the apartments vary in quality and to inspect the unit offered before checking in and either ask for another or choose another provider if The Lakes is not able to provide what you are looking for.

Room Tip: Ask for a unit in one of the newer buildings.

The facade; gardens, pools, buildings, etc are all fine and well maintained. As soon as I entered our apartment I pulled out the iPad to try find somewhere else to stay - alas a few days out from solar eclipse this was impossible for a reasonable price so we were stuck.

Our room stank - a mix between stale smoke and wet animal. The furniture was broken and dangerous for a toddler (nothing like a glass coffee table with two broken legs). This was fixed reasonably quickly. The fabric on two of the lounge chairs were held together by safety pins and the floor was so dirty our feet were constantly filthy.

You were expected to take out your own rubbish - fine, but supplied no bin liners. The ensuite was attached to the smallest room? The wifi didn't work. There is a single food outlet on site that couldn't get your order right in a million years and that was close to it on facilities other than the pools (that were actually working).

All floors are tiled so we were constantly hearing the resident neighbours including those above us continuously dragging furniture about. Ever door that closed in the complex echoed throughout the block.

You also better have a car as this place is close only to the airport and about 10minutes from town by car. Thankfully we only heard planes a handful of times. I was happy we had a portacot as there is no way I wanted our toddler touching the smelly bedspreads.

The staff are helpful but that doesn't make up for very tired tatty rooms.

Overall this place was reasonably expensive - I assumed this equalled a minimum level of quality. Obviously reading reviews some apartments are better than others. Based on our experience I would definitely find somewhere closer to town that is much newer - there are way better cleaner places for less money with working usable facilities.
