“Can't wait to go back!”
Reviewed 1 April 2013

We were looking for a place for the kids to have fun and to relax. We found it here. The apartment was extremely homely and had everything we needed. The resort itself was fantastic and very tidy. The swimming area was superb and this is where we spent most of our time. The only time we really saw resort staff was when we checked in, after that we didn't see anyone until we checked out. Our apartment block did not have an elevator which wasn't an issue, however it isn't openly advertised that apartments have stairs, so older travellers may want to request an apartment on the ground floor. Travellers should also note that many of the apartments are privately owned or rented, so as well as tourist there are many locals who stay here. The onsite restaurant had some great deals on, we had the $10 Sunday Pizza which is definitely value for money. The resort is located approx 10 mins drive from the Esplanade but there are plenty of food outlets etc in walking distance. We are already planning our next trip back, and taking friends!!!

Room Tip: Older travellers or those who find it hard walking stairs should request a ground floor apartment.

When I booked this hotel, I was a little bit hesitant after I saw bad reviews on the net. But I give it a go and completely satisfied with this hotel. We have 2 bedroom apt, clean nice n tidy. Spacious bedroom, spacious apartment with big balcony. The have a couple pools that you can choose. All nice clean with blue water. Concierge always attended with nice n friendly staff. Food also good just a little bit expensive. After all this is a big resort but well taken care of. I am happy with the service and the room. However we could use extra air conditioner on the living room, since it seems struggling to keep the room cool during summer. It's a bit far from city, but taxi only cost us around 14$ or you can use shuttle bus as well. This resort make me feel like at home relax n happy.

After reading the reviews, I was happy for us to make up our own minds as I had stayed here last October for a week and loved it!! We have had a fantastic week here and will be sad to leave tomorrow! As for the people who have written there are NO elevators...let us tell you there are 2 x blocks with elevators and we are in room 1322 and have elevator service! The reception staff were very helpful and when we arrived and had a room on the third floor with NO elevator they were very accommodating in moving us to another room! The kids loved the pools, we used the BBQ machine and there were lots of them working! Last time we had room 605 and would prefer that one but we have had no problems here: air cons all working good, fans all quiet and we brought our own DVD player! We are using our internet off our phone and there is NO problem with reception for either Optus or Telstra here. We have no problem walking the 3km to town and have done so 3 x times this week...but then we like walking!! We love having the IGA store out the back gate and the restaurant serves the best Fruit tingle cocktails...according to the son!! We will be happy to recommend this place to our friends. i have checked with the management and they will be keeping 50 to 60 units for tourist accommodation, so we are happy to hear that!

Room Tip: We like room 605 and now we have found the elevators: room 1322 is good too!

The girls wanted to come back for a day/nite outin and enjoy the pools as a break from work. We had to be in cairns early that day to pick up Tafe things, so we asked for an early check in which we were told was ok as we had stayed here a few times in the past...... Now check in is 2pm and after f..k.n us around most of the day, we got a call at (1.35pm) that the room was ready. After driving around cairns for 5-6 hrs doing nothing but wastin fuel we finally picked up the keys at 1.53pm. The heat in cairns that was 36c-humidity 85%..... l feel we didnt ask for much, it was just to get out of the heat knowing what cairns is like. l wont be back.

The entire resort is a little run down... Not bad but the Internet pictures are misleading. Overall though it is family friendly, but not value for money. The restaurant although pricey serves good food. The in house store expensive. The air cons struggled to keep our unit and rooms cool, and if you go in summer take a good insect repellant as the place attracts lots of sand flies. Also the kids games room was closed, as was the gym. The resort needs upkeep. Nice gardens and lots of pools to choose from... Although we travel to cairns often we will not be going back to the lakes.

Room Tip: Ground floor is the pick. No lifts.

Last time we stayed at the Lakes was January 2008 and in my previous review you can see that I pleased with our stay.

We stayed again in January (2013) for two nights. I rang the hotel directly and received a far better deal than was available on any online booking webpages. We saved close to $100 per night for a two bedroom apartment by talking to the bookings office directly.

So keeping this in mind, we had a good experience at the Lakes, however, if we had payed more for our apartment I would have been disappointed.

The recent reviews were right about a number of things. First, this is no longer a tourist populated resort but one mostly filled with permanent residents. Second, the apartments that are available to tourists are a little tired compared to what we experienced many years ago. Third, the fabulous restaurant from 2008 has been replaced by an Italian cafe style restaurant. We did not try it as it looked overpriced for simple Italian food. And last, yes, there are no elevators in the buildings so if you do find it difficult to climb three flights of stairs make sure you book a ground level floor.

With exception to these issues, we still had a fabulous time. The pools were amazing. Our toddler loved the beach lagoon pools and we found the grounds to be well looked after.

While our two bedroom apartment felt smaller than the one bedroom we stayed in 2008, we still had plenty of room to set up our portacot in one room and have another room for ourselves. While some of the furnishings do need updating, it was still clean and comfortable. All airconditioners worked well. The only thing that did not work in our apartment was the oven - we put in some garlic bread to warm through and it burned it to a crisp within minutes. We told management and they said that they will note that it didn't work. Since we were only there for a few days we never found out the outcome of this.

Overall for the price we paid we had a very good stay. Would I return? I think next time we will be looking at somewhere else to stay in Cairns.

Room Tip: Ring reservations directly for a better deal

We looked for a year to find the perfect hotel.
Arrived and was impressed. We requested a room by the pool, instead we were
Up 3 flights of steps, no elevator in a box over looking a field. Apartment style hallways. Ok, we make the best of it ,until one day after being out all day, we discover things were missing from my suitcase, and found some of my stuff in my Friends bag. We immediately went to the front desk with a complaint.
And when pressuring this manager. All he can say " it could have been anybody" are you serious ? Your a gated community. !
So when I get back to the States, I called the real manager.
She turned a blind eye that her maids could be stealing. That they were with them many years. She took my email address and says I will check this out, and get back to you.. It's been 3 months now and still no word.
FYI.. Can't judge a book by it cover!!
Very disappointed. Poor Mangement. Would not recommend this place
